What do I have to do differently here to go from stock to verygreen's latest more "official" build? I noticed he has a different CWM and obviously a different Rom than the ones you reference here, but his post isn't nearly as foolproof as yours

This is probably a stupid question, but none of the guides I can find on here mention it specifically, nor does this one.

Will this method work on the new version 2.1.0 software? It seems the nook's force the update to install, so it is kind of impossible to avoid, but I just wanted to ask to make sure it would work and isn't likely to mess anything up.

The stock version doesn't matter, since you'll be booting to a bootable SD card and overwriting stock with CM (after backing up of course).

>What do I have to do differently here to go from stock to verygreen's latest more "official" build?

The guide uses the '####' filename designation to mean whatever is the latest CM ROM version from verygreen's development thread. Put differently, the "install from stock" process is the same for any build. I'll add a section for "update" installs for newer ROM versions.

I used leapinlar's CWM boot image because it is a 4GB image and allows more space (for backup) than verygreen's 1GB boot image. I used verygreen's CWM installable package.

I initially used TWRP (from verygreen's thread) over CWM, as TWRP is more navigation friendly, being touch-based, and allows more options. Unfortunately, my test backup/restore routine failed. The backup finished and checked out with MD5 verify, but the restore crashed and corrupted the SD card which has the saved files. This happened twice in a row, and the failure was at the same place (when restoring /boot partition).

The guide relies on the KISS principle, which means simple and foolproof. There may be faster ways to image a file onto media, but any additional software or step introduced is another potential point of failure or confusion. With KISS, you don't give newbies options, as that forces them to make decisions and increases complexity. The guide is responsible for picking the best option for them. "Best" here means most tried-and-true, aka foolproof.

CM 10.1 doesn't support exFAT or NTFS. There are add-on solutions available, one is here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38264385). Perhaps verygreen will take requests to include exFAT/NTFS support into the build itself.

PS: I've updated the guide to include eMMC install for the Nook HD, now that it's made available by verygreen. But I'll leave it to others to answer questions on the HD since I don't have one.

exfat seems to work using that, thanks!

Awesome guide, thanks for making it. I got everything installed and working correctly; however, I used a 16gb micro sd card and now it is only showing that it is a 4gb card. I want to use the full 16gb capacity for storing media. How do I return the micro sd card to its original state, and is this a good idea or not? Thanks for any help you can provide.

HI. I've followed the guide and have CM10.1 running on my 8GB Nook HD, but I wondered if there was any way to move apps to the external SD card ?
I've tried a number of options and apps, but they all seem to fail because of the emulated SD Card (I think that's correct?).

I was running CM10.1 from SD previously, but I was suffering freezing at random (using a SanDisk 16Gb Ultra HC Class 10 card).

Cheers!

I have a brand-new Nook HD+ with 2.1 on it. The only way that I can boot into CWM is if I "erase and deregister" first. Obviously, I want to register the device before installing CM10.1 (and then make a backup of my registered stock image), but if I register the device and install the SD card with CWM on it boots into stock every time. Any suggestions? I've tried reloading the image file and I've tried five different SD cards.

I've done 4 HD+'s and haven't seen that. One was a little finicky and took 3 attempts to boot from SD, but they all boot into CWM while registered. You can try verygreen's 1GB boot image from the CM10.1 development thread, or leapinlar's alternative method of making a bootable card (from his sig's CWM entry). Last resort of course is to exchange the Nook for another one.

>if there was any way to move apps to the external SD card?

Android 4.2 introduced multi user accounts, which makes things a little more complicated since each account has its own separate storage, so pre-4.2 solutions aren't likely to work. It's a little-used feature thus far, as it's only on tablets and not on phones, and Android tabs for the family have yet to be sold in large numbers.

As with exFAT, it's a feature that perhaps verygreen can get to, or simply to wait for future Android/CM versions, which will probably address it.

>How do I return the micro sd card to its original state, and is this a good idea or not?

PC/Mac can format SD cards. PC can format flash to exFAT (or NTFS with a setting change), and hopefully the Nook will be able to read those at some point.

>do these devices do 802.11n?

Yes but only in 2.4GHz, not 5GHz.

That is correct, the emulated SD card and the way CM10.1 operates prevents moving apps to SD. The 5GB of free space you have in the internal memory seems like a lot of space until you fill it up with media files and you have no more room to install more apps. If you are still in the return period, I would recommend returning it and buying the 16GB model.

Thanks for the great guide, e.mote! Except for a bit of finickiness around the micro-SD card everything went great (had to try around 20 or 30 times before it would boot to card!).

Thanks for the reply.
Returning isn't an option unfortunately, and there weren't any with larger capacity in stock when I bought it (I'd dropped my Nexus 7, and needed a replacement quickly, and cheaply).

I don't mind putting media on the external card manually (I've already done that, and it seems fine), but I would have liked the option to move apps - I'll have to consider the options, such as getting a more compatible SD card for an SD install or putting up with it - luckily, I don't really bother with games :)

You're right, it had nothing to do with registration. It's just VERY finicky. I've probably done fifty reboots now and three have booted into CWM. This last series I used the 1GB boot image. I'll see how this one works, but I don't think I want to take a chance on not being able to restore the original stock image because the thing won't boot into CWM.

UPDATE: I swapped the unit for a new one. I'm running CM10.1 with no problems now. Thanks for your help and hard work!

Thanks for the great tutorial. This is the first time I've flashed a ROM via an SD card and I'm pleasantly surprised how easy it was.

BTW, I used an 8 GB SanDisk Class 4. Not sure whether some of you are using the faster Class 10, but I had no problems booting to the SD with mine.

Also, I had a hard time finding the CMW recovery file (took longer than I'd like to admit). Could you link the file directly as I did above? Maybe I'm the only dimwitted one here though...

EDIT: Hey, um... My 8GB card is now only showing as 4GB after doing a quick format in Windows 7 x64. How do I get back to a 8GB card? Thx.
