great guide, very helpful and easy to follow. I would also add steps to wipe cache and the davlik cache after the factory reset.
You do not need to do that. A factory reset automatically wipes both.

Binary for dummies

Thanks for all of the awesome work! I followed the instructions for the emmc install and everything works pretty darn well. I love stock android. I have a few questions though.

1. When everything is installed and the binary gets updated, do we need to follow that whole process over again to update to a new binary? I want to go from 6/05 -> 6/13 and I was wondering how to go about it. I looked in the FAQ and couldn't find anything. Do I just load it on the SD ad flash the binary? Will I lose all of the apps, settings, etc every time I do this and have to reinstall via backup?

2. I am running the 6/08 binary and the system gets stuck when I attempt a reboot. It freezes at the CyogenMod screen with the animation. I have attempted a reboot through powering off, and through the install screen, but I am still stuck. I was previously able to wipe the delvik cache, which worked, but all of the applications had to "optimize" before it booted up.

Thanks

bokbokban's sd card install

Just installed the hybrid sd card CM10.1 from bokbokban and it took all of 10 minutes. Worked first time and every time thereafter. Been rebooting between stock and CM10.1 with no problem.

Can't post in that thread just yet as I'm an XDA noobie. Just wanted to give bokbokban a big thanks for the hard work he's been doing for this device.

I just tried updating the binary through CWM. I get the error

E:Error in /sdcard/cm-10.1-20130613-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc.zip

Otherwise I am stuck now at the Cyanogen Mod screen, I just get the never ending animation.

Just realized I need to be installing ovation, not hummingbird...duh.

>do we need to follow that whole process over again to update to a new binary?

I added a section for updating to new builds.

>the system gets stuck when I attempt a reboot

Suggest reverting to a bare (no apps) config and try to boot. If issue happens at baseline config, it's systemic; if it happens only with full app load-out, it's app-related. For more help, suggest you repost the question in Q&A forum, and with more info about your config.

>I was able to restore my full SD card size by using SDFormatter (free) and the "Format Size Adjustment" option.

I'll add this to the FAQ.

>Could you link the file directly as I did above?

I prefer not to direct link, as links can change. The file in question is adequately labeled in the referenced post, IMO.

Great guide, worked perfectly. I just got my HD+ today, and noticed after turning it off the battery stats reset. I know they reset after charging, but I've never seen them reset after a reboot. I tried rebooting to see if it'd do it again and it did not. Anyone else notice problems with this?

Installation aborted

I tried installing the hummingbird zip and I got the error message installation aborted (status 7) - tried it twice and got the same error. Any help?

That is probably because you were trying to flash the hummingbird on an HD+. HD+ needs ovation.

Thank you very much for the quick and easy to follow set of instructions!

I write a lot of documentation for work, and I am often amazed at how poorly written so many of the "instructional" threads are. This is NOT one of those.

Thanks again!

I am stuck at step 1. I get an error when I try to have win32diskimager write the image onto my microsd card. Does it have to be a 4gb card? I was using an 8gb card. Any other thoughts?

The SD card can be larger than 4GB. SD card media quality varies, and read/write/boot compatibility can be problematic at times (not just with the Nook). Hence the suggestion to have spare card(s) on hand if the first doesn't work. I'd first try removing and reinserting the card, in case of bad contacts.

It does not matter if it is an 8GB card. For those having trouble burning the card with win32diskimager, I have an alternate procedure that does not require using win32diskimager. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature (where e.mote sent you to get the image file) and read item 1a for the new procedure.

Picked up a new microsd card, was able to successfully do what I wanted to both tablets, thanks for the help.

One thing though, I can't find a compatible nook app to put on the fully rooted hd+ so I can read.

Funny, now that I have rooted and custom rom'd my nook, I can't read a book from my nook account.

Try Moon Reader http://www.moondownload.com/. Best Android eReader app I've found.

I think you'll have to either sideload the Nook app(it should be easily findable due to Kindle Fire users who want it without installing the whole Play Store) or change your build.prop. Apparently B&N has blacklisted the device from installing the device from the Play store. Probably not quite as malicious as it sounds, they probably just didn't want people trying to install the Nook app on their normal Nook HD+ firmware once the Google Play store became official.
