how to format SD card

May sound like a dumb question but how to format the SD in the tablet? I can't find that option in CM 10.1. The only way I can do it is booting into recover mode and format it in CWM. But the card is formatted into FAT32. Which leads to another problem I am having.

I want to format my card into exFAT and from what I read the Stock Rom can do it (but obviously I am on a different Rom). The SD formatter only formats into FAT32 as well. So the windows utility is the only option?

Formatted it IN the tablet, and it was fine. I'm two for two! Now, who can tell me why videos (including side-loaded mp4s and YouTube) suddenly stopped working?

Not sure about formating options other than windows (noob here).
You are going to need this Mod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155363 , as cm 10.1 doesn't natively support exFat.

I think I made a mistake in installing Cyanogen. After installing the zip and rebooting, CWM prompted something along the lines of "Do you want to disable flash recovery in order to prevent the device from flashing to stock". I selected yes. Now when I reboot, I get the nook splash screen for a few seconds, then what looks like a power cycle and back to the nook splash screen. This happens repeatedly and I never see a splash screen related to Cyanogen attempting to boot.

I tried rebooting with the SD card and I can access CWM, but when I factory wipe and reinstall the zip, I don't see the same prompt for flash recovery that I saw the first time and I get the same behavior on reboot.

- Should I have selected "no" during the prompt for the first reboot?
- How do I fix this through CWM?

I flashed the most recent CM file: cm-10.1-20130626-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip

EDIT: I solved the issue by re-downloading CM. I must have had a bad download.

That message is meaningless and any answer you gave is ok. It has nothing to do with your issue...

glad you got it fixed.

Does this method still work if your Nook's firmware is updated to latest? I can't seem to boot from the SD card.
Yes, it still works. It is just some of the newer HD+'s are hard to get to boot to SD. Just keep trying with different SD brands and speeds.

very nice guide :)
thanks

I've managed to install CM in a few minutes

one quick question though, even it is stated in the guide that I need SDcard whenever I want to backup, but still I proceeded doing the backup on internal storage, so it seems it went through and I can see the backup zip on restore tab in CWM. But when on OS, where can I see the backup files I did? Normally(on other device) I can see it on internal storage tab "clockworkmod" but on this device, I can't seem to find it  Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Feel like an idiot, but I can't get Win32DiskImager to format card

Install & run Win32DiskImager. Use it to write the 4GB image to SD card. Wait until done.

When I run this and eject the card and and try to remount it Windows I need to format the disk - back to square one

I'm sure this is an easy fix sorry for the time wasted. Feel silly I have been able to root Kindle Fires to Cyanogen as well as multiple phones but they never deal with booting from an SD card.

Once CWM is installed into the Nook, you can boot from Nook (via reboot-to-recovery) and just use a regular FAT32-formatted (non-bootable) SD card.

CWM backup location: It's in the FAQ in the 2nd post. With CM's default file manager, you'd have to raise your access level in its Settings. Most other file mgrs can navigate outside of local user storage folder. You don't need a SD card to back up, just that internal storage is limited, and can be more useful than for storing backups (which can be offlined to SD card).

Imaging failure: Writing & booting the SD card are the two most common issues. Suggest trying a different card or a different reader/adapter. Also, different USB port, PC, etc.

So I'm a little confused. Where exactly are people putting their sd card to write the image? Not in the nook because diskimage writer won't see that to write to. External or built in readers? The only way I've been able get diskimage to see the sd card to write to is when putting my sdcard in my cell phone, and turning on usb storage. but at the end of the write and copying files the phone itself and nook see the sd as damaged/errors. Is this viable or am I missing something obvious?

Just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to e.mote for this guide! I'm an Android noob and was able to get CM10.1 installed without much fuss. I don't think I would have even attempted it without this thread.

I was under the impression that you'd normally use an external card reader for that. I bought one just for installing CM10.1, since I didn't have one. I'm a new user, so I can't post a link, but I ordered a small $6 one from Amazon. I'd recommend one with a direct microSD slot so that you don't have to mess with an adapter.

so if I can't get Win32DiskImager to write to this card I have to buy another?

I ask because I really don't want to go out and buy another one, I am limited on my time and resources as is, and going out to buy another SD card is not an option. Not a huge deal, I'd love to have Cyanogen instead of Nook's "version" of an OS...but sadly I am not able to go out and buy more cards.

every time I attempt to write it says it worked but when I eject and reinsert the sd card it Windows 7 wants to format it...rats.

Which sd card so you have? SanDisk class 4 16gb or less seems to work the best

nope I did - 4912 is the size of the image - I hit write, choose that file and it disappears from the file directory eject and reinsert and it says would you like to format.
What do you mean, it disappears from the file directory? Are you putting the image file on the SD before you burn with win32diskimager? You should be putting the .img file on the PC and burn to the SD.

Sorry for confusion guys, just would love to get CM10.1 on this tablet. I downloaded the image, unzipped it, and then opened win32diskimager and hit "write" onto the root of the sdcard. as soon as it says write was successful the sd card dissapears for the explorer file tree and I can no longer access it from explorer. When I eject and reinsert the card it says I need to format the card.
