i have no problem whatsoever. it only heats a lil bit when fast charging. playing hardcore games do not make it hotter than when fast charging. definitely better than when i was using s4. S7 Exynos here

UPDATE:
apps that run on background that eat huge chunks of the memory and cpu is the culprit for overheating issue for me. like facebook messenger. ill try to see if save power feature in the nougat version will kill the app when not used.

Left mine on a tripod at about 11am in the sun doing a timelapse, came back to get it at 12pm and it was absolutely red hot from the sun

Brought it inside and put a fan on it for a while until it cooled off

Hopefully didn't damage the battery, it was almost too hot to touch

My wifes phone has been having some serious overheating issues lately (not related to oculus) to the point that she can't hold it in her hand. She doesn't do any gaming cept' words with friends, and she uses facebook, instagram primarily with texting. Weird thing is I do heavy gaming on mine to stress it and it stays cool. I tried a factory reset, re-flashed firmware with odin with all the same results. Now she is worried her phone is going to spontaneously combust like the note 7.

Does it cool down when it's switched off?

If not, get the battery checked, but if you have factory reset, and it's still doing it with no other apps installed, get it checked anyway

I will say, if I play a game, such as The Walking Dead: No Man's Land, for awhile, it can get quit hot. I have it in a case, so it's not too bad, but I have had it out of the case before and felt it was getting hot. Not so hot that I couldn't hold onto it.

Also, when charging with fast charge, it gets hot. No fast charge, it's fine.

However, once I stop playing the game or unhook it from fast charging, within a minute or two, it's cool to the touch again.

Best smart phone I've had yet.

Mine has never overheated, only gets slightly hot while gaming or upgrading some apps.
My samsang galaxy S 7 also heat while operating normal task...also battery charging rate 1hrs from 5%to 100% but drain time in 1hrs near about 50%...is my phone working right or overloaded

I can reach 70ºC (aprox~156ºF?) easily while gaming(mostly Summoners War) and screen mirroring (and controlling) to computer.

I have even lowered both resolution and textures through game tuner, to about 50% each.

My flat S7 (exynos) reach about 40ºC-50ºC while doing normal stuffs. I do live in a tropical country.

But, if i game without screen mirroring, my phone drops down to 50ºC-60ºC.

Are these CPU temps right? I usually keep an eye on battery temperature so maybe you can have a look on that too (and personally I can help with that if you want). If those are battery temps well maybe your phone has a problem LOL

Yes, these are CPU temps. I keep monitoring with CPUZ, my battery sits between 44ºC-47ºC while cpu is at 70ºC

I've made some tests earlier, any screen mirroring, sidesync aswell, keep my CPU at max speed, even if i let it idle at home screen. It stops when i turn off the screen.

If i play without screen mirroring my cpu gets 50 to 60ºc, usually 50ºC, and battery at 30-35ºC.

Do you recommend me a better app to check temps?

The app you use to check temps is good but 30-35 °C for the battery is the maximum I'd recommend, over 40 °C I'm surprised the phone does not shut down itself for overheating. When you mirror you definitely have to put a fan on it in some way.. on Amazon you can find something as cooling pads or cooling covers if you try to search (I bought a simple fan and created a stand with Legos LOL). I'd say that the other temps are just right

Anyway for good temps monitoring there is gsam battery monitor, it's very complete and records temps even when the screen is off etc

The galaxy s7 has 8 cores; 4 are low powered and 4 are high speed , when your phone is in your pocket or idle the high powered cpu's are off, so you get long battery life and the phone stays cool.
But when you run a cpu intensive task such as playing a game or heavy browsing, the phone switches on the fast cpu's to make the phone run fast.
The fast 4 cores run at 2.6Ghz, and they do get hot, there is a tinny heat pipe in the phone that transfers the heat away from the cpu to the metal frame, so you feel the heat in you hand.
You should be worried if you get a hot phone while its idle, that means something is running in the back ground, probably mining your info. I suggest getting a stock rom that gets rid of all the adware from your phone and just has stock android.

It must not get TOO hot even under heavy load, it should at least throttle to limit CPU frequency

My S7 worked very well with a custom ROM (Batman Rom) until I used my S7 for navigation and it got quite hot. Result was the phone froze and reboot ended in a bootloop. Tried reinstalling ROM but failed all the time (phone stuck when unpacking the ZIP file). Tried everything from resetting to factory default, installing stock ROM, nothing works hence I suppose phone is damaged (memory or mainboard).

Phone gets hot pretty easily. Running the camera for example will cause it to heat up though I've only had it start rebooting after installing Oreo. Likely because it's more aggressive with keeping the CPUs at higher clocks.

Samsung really should have issued a recall for these with the S8 and Note 7 "batterygate". It's a defect if I can't run the phone at full, stock CPU @ 22 degrees ambient and not have it shut down. Can't imagine the battery will last long at that heat.

I think the time to get at least a custom kernel has come, sammy made terrible kernels for the newer S series devices too
