Hey guys,

Just got a 16gb Nook Tablet.

We want to root this tablet and install a custom rom so we get can get access Google Play, Youtube, etc.

Can you help out? If there's already a thread, please help link it?

We want to install the ROM on the tablet itself, not running it from a micro SD card.

Thanks

Link in my sig. You'll need a small sd for the initial root/recovery install, but that's it.

Thanks, studying that link now.

Can you elaborate on the followings?

Download the CWM_SD_flash_and_exe from here and unzip them into a folder.

Zip them to a folder on the desktop/laptop or the SD card

Your instructions show how to root. The next step would be installing a custom ROM.

What ROM do you suggest? I like something clean, stable, and fast. And how do I go about installing the ROM?

Thanks

You need to spend some time on this forum reading, using the search button, as well as googling information. Everything you have asked has been covered multiple times over on here.

Sent from my CM 10 SD nook tablet. Thanks devs.

While I agree with the above, make sure you're on the right recovery for the ROM you intend to install. The instructions don't cover all of the bases in terms of the most recent recoveries released, but you can find them usually in the ROM thread itself.

Yes, I can spend weeks reading the thousands of posts on here.

But if you know of a thread, that have easy steps by steps to root and install a custom rom, you can point newbies like me to such threads.

Now, that's being helpful.

Everyone knows Google, everyone knows to read.

This is a sticky, right at the top. Easy to miss I guess. (shrug)
[FAQ] NT Reference Thread | Tips&Tricks | How to's | Videos | NEW USER? PLEASE READ!

Search button for your information works great.

Here is another sticky, again, right at the top. PLEASE READ: An Introduction to Android Rooting, Custom Recoveries, and Custom ROMs

Another sticky, again right at the top of the section. Even has a step by step video.

[Blocks OTA's!] Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Permanent root!]

All of the rom posts are in the dev section. They explain what to do, what the rom does, what works what doesn't work. Everything you need is right in front of you if you spend a few minutes either searching or just clicking and reading.

I am not trying to be a ****, I swear I am not, but you need to help yourself a little bit. The greatest gift you can give yourself is gaining an understanding of things BEFORE attempting to do them. Read, re-read, search the net to learn the terms. If/When things go wrong it is much easier to get help/resolve the issue if you have at least a little bit of understanding as to what is going wrong.

There isn't such a thread to my knowledge, but you've seen my post on rooting, the next step is selecting a rom. That's really up to you. From there, the installation instructions of that rom are usually in the first 2 posts of the thread. Commands given are usually issued in the recovery.

Make sure you're on the right recovery. Jellybean will not install on a CWM recovery under 6.x. Most rom threads will include links.

Actually I think that is what anyone should do before installing a custom ROM. Spend lots of time reading, that, is. Not thousands of threds, but maybe 100 (?) that seem to deal with what I want to do. There are things you can do with the device to have it running well before you take the step of installing a new ROM internally so you can take your time! Stickies are always a good place to start.

liquidzoo, your root instructions look to be straightforward.

can you answer a few more questions?

it looks like your method install the CMW recovery? and you said that JB ROM will not install on CWM recovery?

also, which custom ROM would you recommend? i am just looking for a ROM that's fast, clean, and stable. doesn't need to come with lots of fancy features or tweaks.

thanks much

A jb rom will definitely install on CWM recovery, but you need version 6.x. A flashable 6.x cwm recovery can be found, among other places, in the AOKP thread in my sig.

Which rom I prefer may be different than a rom you like. I suggest trying them out for yourself and picking your favorite.

I was on TEAM-B SD card bootable ROM . I am coming after a long time.I am following your instructions liquidzoo.

in your instruction , installing that "update.zip" Roots the device right ?

After that you asked to download the recovery image from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958 ,but its really confusing in that thread.

Instead can i use this (http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/CWM_v6.0.1.5_emmc.zip ) recovery file to flash , after running the "update.zip" to install the latest CWM ?

Also how to perform nandroid backup?

Edit :

Flashed 6.0.1.5 CWM . Nook Tablet is rooted now.

1.) How to get into CWM now ? While booting , i tried to boot with "Power+Vol Up" , is this the way or how ? also After doing all these , i can format the SD card and use it to load the ROM and for normal purpose right ? Or we need the SD card to boot into CWM everytime ?

OK found how to go into CMW.

But please let me know if this is the correct method

Power+N > while booting , release power button > Goes into CYANOBOOT > Select Internal eMMC Recovery to go into CMW right ? ,

From here , we can install the ROM`s ? Also can i now format the SD card which i created for Root and installing CWM ?
Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, that is the correct recovery.

The way to boot into recovery with cyanoboot is to power on, hold the n at the cyanoboot screen and select boot emmc recovery.

From that recovery, yes you can install any rom. If you install a multi-touch rom (will be marked as such, and there is usually a 2 and 5/10 touch download) you will have to upgrade the firmware. I did it this way (if you're interested):

Download the rom you want to internal or external sd.

Download the proper rom from imafanof.wordpress.com as well. Follow the installation instructions on that website to upgrade the firmware Don't panic when the touch screen doesn't work, that means the upgrade worked. Just reboot to recovery and flash your new rom (don't forget gapps, which should be linked in the rom post as well)

If you don't want to upgrade the firmware, that's okay too. Just flash a 2 touch rom.

Yes, you can format the sd card now if you need, or keep it around and buy a new one so you have one you know will boot, just in case.

Hope that helps.

I am trying to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877217

I download the rom , gapps , everything and even booted in CMW , luckily before wiping things , i just checked whether the ROMS on SD card are available via CMW , unfortunetly , it says , SD Card cant be mounted. I tried to mount via advanced option , still it says the same. So i rebooted normally to see if the rooted ROM sees the SD Card , it detects when i insert the card , but doesnt show anything , either under the "settings" > SD CARD option , nor in ES file explorer. Tried another SD card too , didnt work.

Can you help me?

edit :

When i checked the application , and clicking "On SD CARD" , it shows ES explorer and ADW launcher. but the sd card inside is cleanly formatted one.

did i mess with rooting process ?

tried to reinsert the sd card , still the same error.

one more thing i forgot to mention , one of my old card (from my Xperia X10) is working fine. I have two more sd cards , that didnt work

I tried to format it to fat32 , freshly on both , still no luck.

Just listing my cards :

4 GB Class 2 Card which is working

Both the following are not working.

8GB Class 2

What brand and class are the cards? Nooks are very finicky about SD cards. Mine onlys works with SanDisk cards, which most people have found to be the most compatible.

all are sandisk

Edit :

Tried to use my current Phone SD card , which is a Sandisk 8GB Class 10 , worked fine.

So the problem should be with those two only i think , any way to freshly format them ? they are working fine on windows.

Maybe look for a thread that says "root" under Development.

Class 10 card apparently don't play well with the NT. I just checked with my 32GB Wintec class 10 card for another thread.
