Dual Standby & Data issues on CDMA on ZTE Z7 Max CM 11 IIIrd edition

First of all.... many thanks to all the people who contributed to this thread and gave the first time rooters like me so much information.......

Just got my Z7 max yesterday from Alibaba........like most others my phone was also on international rom .38 version...... i updated it to latest .41 and now have it rooted CM 11 following the various useful posts of this thread.

My issue is pretty simple..... but its kind of getting on my nerves so far......

I've a CDMA in slot 1 (configured for CDMA/EVDO) and GSM in slot 2 (configured for GSM only) as per ROM options.

my CDMA sim signal keeps on going up and down greatly....i mean it goes to 1 bar from 3 or 4 bars just like that....and then reverts back.......... shows simple bars at times and mostly 1x and even showed 3G in the evening today..... but i'm not able to use it on DATA if i switch off the WIFI...... i thought maybe its the APN settings that are not there.....

So I went in the settings/ Mobile Networks/Access Point Names to enter my APN personally.... However it won't save the details that i'd enter after clicking the ADD sign..... i've tried Airplane mode, Reboot and everything else i could do............ So please help me out on this.... how to save the APN......

Second issue is the phone is not supporting DUAL STANDBY as it mentions...... I made a call on sim1 CDMA....kept it running...... and called sim2 GSM....it was .not reachable.......

then i made a call on sim2 GSM.... kept it running...... and called sim1 CDMA...... it was not reachable either......

so, this means that...... for the time being DUAL STANDBY is not working on the ROM...... am i right.... ? can we hope it would be fixed in the future update......!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated........!

(1) You should have tried the stock ROM 1.41 first before flashing any custom ROMs. This is to verify whether it's the SIM card issue or hardware issue or ROM issue... Perhaps the CM11 ROM does NOT support certain frequency/bands in your neighbourhood...
(2) All three Nubia variants is Dual STANDBY phones. The function that you are looking for is called Full Dual ACTIVE phones such as my previous LeMoto Vibe Z K910. Apparently, 90% of dual-SIM phones today are dual STANDBY and NOT full Dual ACTIVE. However, one great feature about Z7 dual SIM is that both SIM slots supports LTE. Meaning, we don't need to open the back-cover to switch the SIMs to use LTE. In the settings, we can set EITHER SIM1 OR SIM2 to have LTE while the other is 2G/GSM. For example, we have data plan on both SIMS. Maybe early of the month, we use SIM 1 for LTE. And in the mid-month, the data plan quota finished for SIM1. We can just set the SIM 2 to have LTE and continuously using LTE till SIM 2 data plan quota finished.... and the cycle goes on....

Many thanks for the prompt reply.......My bad that i wrote DUAL STANDBY, instead of DUAL ACTIVE. Actually i've been using a $40 Samsung Bar phone since 3 years that is cdma/gsm DUAL ACTIVE but nobody really uses the ACTIVE term these days so i wrote STANDBY by recall mistake. You're right... most of the phones these days are DUAL STANDBY. Well i wanted a DUAL ACTIVE phone but its not gonna be possible now. So one issue is over since i can't install a second transceiver in my phone to make it DUAL ACTIVE if it doesn't have the second transceiver in it already.

But i'm still skeptical because what i've learnt in the past years is that..... a GSM/GSM phone can be and is mostly dual standby single active because they use only one transceiver to save cost and battery subsequently, BUT a CDMA/GSM phone has to be dual standby dual active, because the transceivers for both are different, hence user can receive calls on both simultaneously. A simple test is to call one number from the other, and if you get an incoming call, then it means the phone has two transceivers. Sadly, my $40 phone can do it but this $400 phone can't. (*SIGHS*)

That being said, I'd also like to mention that the phone supports 3G/4G in both slots at first but the unused second slot will become 2G thereafter and CDMA is supported only on sim 1.

Coming back to my second issue, i mentioned i'm getting 1x/3G on my CDMA sim ....... but data is not working ...... and neither am i able to save the APN to manually enter the data. It lets me click the add button, i enter the data, i save it.....and its gone ..... !

Anybody who can help on this ?

I have not yet received my Z7 Max however I studied the topic before I made the purchase decesion. Blocking the "encrypt device" feature from Adroid seems common in the larger chinese brands, probably driven by the chinese government. I have the following fall-back options:

  1. Install a CFW, like CM11 (from Androidpit forum) or Mokee ROM (from Needrom). Availability of this CM CFW is one of the reasons I chose Z7 max above Honor 6. NB: since I am new to the forum I could not post links.
  2. Install an app that will access Exchange via Outlook Web Access, like Enhanced Email, Mobimail for Exchange, Mobile Access for Outlook OWA. Or, it might be that the new Gmail app (which can access exchange accounts) may do the trick.
  3. Use a specific employer's program, e.g. based on Divide.
  4. (on a rooted phone) Use Xposed module Exchange Security Bypass
Since I will have to wait a couple of weeks for my phone, maybe you can already give it a try and report back in the forum?

I am on modded 1.41 with CWM recovery and I have no problem with encryption. I use 2 exchange mail addresses without issue for a while...

I am on Nubia recovery 1.1 with version 1.41, Nubia recovery might be the issue.

New ZTE Nubia Z7 Max

Hi All,

Note: I have read the complete 36 pages of this thread.

I received my new ZTE Nubia z7 max about 2 days back. Everything is great. Purchased the phone via Amazon here in Canada. The Phoen is freaking awesome. No doubt. I'll provide the details of my phone as below, post which i'll describe my issue.

Phone Specs

Model No: NX505J
Nubia UI: V2.5.0
Android Version: 4.4.2
Build No: NX505J_CNCommon_V9.38
Hardware Version: NX505JMB_A
Stock Nubia Recovery(English) Present
Have Multilanguage ROM, which means i have close to 50+ languages

From the above specifications, i believe i'm in 1.38 firmware version? Please correct me if i'm wrong. When i do system update , i'm intimated that i have an upgrade to 1.41 available. I start the upgrade and download 146MB file, which reboots and fails the upgrade in the recovery mode. Now i read in the forum, that i need to download the complete package of 724MB( for 1.41 version)

GOAL
1. To upgrade to 1.41 and to receive future updates via FOTA
2. Have CWM, so that i can take NANDROID backup of my phone.
2. To Root the phone properly
3. To Install Gapps Properly

OBSERVATIONS

My current phone with 1.38 works flawless. No issues at all. But no root, and i want the latest 1.41. Thats the only reason i want to achieve the above goals.

Now my actual issue starts

1. NOT ABLE TO UNROOT THE EXISTING SUPERSU FROM PHONE

I got the phone pre rooted and Gapps installed from the seller. When i say pre rooted, what i mean is that i see the Super SU(version 1.0.3.0) icon in app drawer. However, if i install Titanium backup, it says that my phone does not have root access. Checked it with root checker too. Same result. No root.

Then why am i seeing the SuperSU icon? and i'm not able to unroot too, since there is no option for unroot inside the SuperSu app. I tried the towelroot method. Towel root gets installed. Reboots the phone. I try installing SuperSu 2.00Version. Its gets installed. I open the app and it prompts to update the binaries. I select Normal mode, post which it give message that there is older SuperSu present, and need to be uninstalled. I give YES to uninstall. It fails ultimately.

I even did full factory reset from phone More --> Backup & Reset-->Factory reset. But its not removing the SuperSu or the Gapps with which the phone came preinstalled. HOW DO I CLEAN WIPE THE PHONE SO THAT ITS BARE FIRMWARE.

Can i proceed with the process mentioned by @pilililo2. If i do proceed, @pilililo2 has advised that the phone needs to be unroot, and then only should i put the 724MB file in phone internal memory and update the file through local update from disk option. BUT I"M NOT ABLE TO UNROOT. Will this cause any problem.

2. If i proceed with local update from disk, will it clean wipe my phone? If it doen't then the older pre installed SuperSu will still be present, which i will not be able to unroot, nor will i be able to install SuperSu 2.0.0 Version.

3. I have dowloaded the GMS Tool Kit from @azeemzuhair. Some say that this didn't work for them. I mean after flashing 1.41 , i dont want to end up without root and Gapps. Thats why i'm asking so many questions.

I believe i have included all the relevant info here. Please tell me the correct procedure to unroot, and if flashing 1.41 will clean wipe or not?

How did you removed root?
I have NX505J_CNCommon_V9.29 ROM, it was prerooted and with gapps. I installed towelroot, why root rooted ROM?

As mentioned earlier, i could see SuperSu icon in app draw. But i did not have root. I could confirm this, because i try installing titanium backup or root checker, and it clearly stated that my phone did not have root.

When i went inside Supersu app, usually we can see "Unroot option. But this SuperSu app(Ver 1.0.3.0) did not have it. Because of this i couldn't use the towel root method and Supersu Ver2.0.0, since it always used to fail installation. I contacted the Chinese seller who i ordered the phone from. They used a Chinese tool call ROMaster to unroot the exisiting Supersu(Ver 1.0.3.0). After they removed the icon, i rooted with towel root. Now i have root.

    CM11 NX505J for Z7 Max WARNING

I've tested CM11 for ZTE Nubia Z7 MAX provided by chinese tdbeta forum. Filename is either one with md5sum d8b1adda6a6cb6054bae106fbd25fc0d:
    cm11 nx505j II Edition.zip or cm-11-20140901-lwang-nx505j.zip

There is unwanted system application included by author which is not part of CM.
APK: system/app/Statics.apk . Presents itself as System Server 1.4.2, package name com.system.analytics.cpa

You can find a system process running from shell:
    Code:
S UID PID PPID VSZ RSS TTY STIME TIME CMD
    S 10057 2644 353 868m 36052 0:0 17:34 00:00:04 .abc

It's set to start on boot, trigger on each app install/deinstall, shutdown. Seems that it collects information about apps installed and reports this information to some remote web service together with imei, serial no and probably some additional private information.
I did not do deep analysis but binary strings suggest that this is unwanted application, for example:
    sendtime=
    Lcom/system/analytics/cpa/b/b/b;
    http://622b6.romdu.com
    god28id732ea
    kay72no139tr
    ro.boot.serialno
    ro.serialno

I recommend disabling or removing this application (System Server 1.4.2) immediately if you're using CM11 NX505J build by lwang.

    EDIT 10-09-2014:
Same warning applies to MoKee build by lwang, filename MK44.4-nx505j-201408231810-lwang.zip with md5sum 4559e08b8874b7176036c9740f803eb5.

The 1.41 rom improved battery performance significantly, with light usage the phone lasts more than 4 days.

I get 2 full days with heavy usage, bright screen setting and everything turned on(wifi, bluetooth, 3g/4g). Really happy with the battery life on this phone.

    Short Review

Coming from Nokia 3210, Moto Razr V3x, Nokia E61, Samsung P780, HTC HD2, iPhone 4, Lenovo S890, Lenovo P780, Alcatel Idol X, LeMoto K910 and previously Huawei Honor 3C.

Got the ZTE Nubia Z7 Max unit from Lazada with RM150 discount at RM1,149. Playing for 24-hour already... It's rooted 4.4.2 KitKat under NX505J_CNCommon_V1.32 ROM. Here's my comments about this unit:

A = Android = NubiaUI 2.0 KitKat is acceptable. Lots of junk apps out of the box. After rooted, can be frozen/uninstalled.
B = Body-Built = ZTE managed to make the plastic feel 'acceptable'. Buttons are nicely placed and decent feedback. Capacitive buttons with interchangable functions (menu vs back) are a welcome feature. Thickness and weight are comfortable. 3rd party casing and screen protectors is encouraged but I leave my unit naked.
C = Call quality = Second place after my previous Moto RAZR V3x. You can get reception even inside elevator or basement one.
D = Data = LTE modules for both micro-SIM 1 & 2 are the best out of all phones I've own. Previously the record was held by Huawei Honor 3C. Bluetooth is stable too.
E = Email = Email client is flexible compared to other Android-based phones. It works as intended.
F = Free-apps = None which is shame. I was hoping lifetime WhatsApp license just like the Alcatel Idol X.
G = Games = As expected, heavy titles are not an issue with Snapdragon 801 and Andreno 330.
H = Hangouts = Video call for Skype, Google Hangouts, Tango etc. is superb for 5MP front facing camera.
I = Internet = AOSP browser is smooth. No checker-board effect on heavy websites.
J = Juice = 3100mAh = "Decent". Claimed talk-time, stand-by time, etc. are achievable for dual-standby-micro-SIM LTE phone. Power consumption during idle state is 2% from 11pm to 5am. Daily usage can threaten my previous LeMoto P780.
K = Kamasutra :p = Phone vibrates with notification/ringtone. Vibrating sensation is above average. Ladies may use it for other purpose(s)... LOL...
L = Loudspeaker = The loudest out of all my previous models. DTS manipulation is pushing the loudspeaker further. But crack if treble is too high. Bass is above average.
M = Music = Again the DTS technology does its magic. Headphone/earphone usage is encouraged.
N = Navigation = Working as expected. Lock satellite within 10 seconds. Waze and Google Maps are working normally, even indoors.
O = One-hand Operation = I have "big" hands and "long" fingers ;) No further comment.
P = Picture = 13MP is exceptional packed with standard camera features/modes. Dept-of-Field feature withadjustable lighting condition is one of its kind.
Q = Quirks = tap-hold to bring cut-copy-paste-select does not aligned properly and difficult to tap. But this can be improved in their next ROM release.
R = Rooting = Super-duper-hyper EASYYYYYYYYY. TowelRoot is the one-click rooting tool. Mod ROM is also available but not purely ROW ROM.
S = Sound = Earphone sound is OK. Speaker-phone is OK too but crack if too loud. The DTS manipulates the sound brilliantly.
T = Texting = Stock android keyboard should be replaced with Google keyboard.
U = User-Interface = smooth & flexible with various themes to choose. Thanks to the 2GB RAM.
V = Video = Capturing 1080P video is acceptable. 4K is limited to 4 minutes due to overheating. Auto-focus is acceptable.
W = WiFi = The best out of all smartphones that I have own. Previously was Huawei Honor 3C. Others only manage to get 1-2 bars in my basement floor test. But z7 Max captures 5 full bars without fail. Honor 3C gets 4 bars.
X = X-factors = For dual-micro-SIM LTE phone with 2GB RAM supported by 32GB onboard storage is worth every penny. Strong voice/data/Wi-Fi reception is a desperate move for those who live in the outskirts or camping sites. Gamers will like this unit too.
Y = YouTube = The 5.5" IPS screen accompanied by excellent LTE connection is surely an enjoyable experience.
Z = Zero-figure. Imported from People Republic of China (PRC) unit at Malaysia Ringgit RM1,149-point-zero-zero is a smart investment with high internal specs.

CONCLUSION : Buy it if you are looking for high-spec phone having dual-micro-SIM LTE support. Gonna clinging to this unit until Huawei Ascent Mate 7 or LeMoto Vibe Z2 pro dual-SIM is available in local market.
