Help regarding building kernel for custom rom

Ok guys
I want to build a kernel using sources and patch it to my preference
Where to start
What to git clone
What Linux is best
What tools do I need

*Next is for b**mers*
I messed up a bit with sources and wasn't able to achieve anything Google couldn't help

I don't want to be spoonfed and want to learn

I myself have been getting stuck into it, this is the first step and read read read.
Make sure anything that is blue. click click click. Blue writing and a square click and look for a way to install it.

Major learning curve and much easier to make custom roms for google phones. Because they supply the files you need, to make it for the phone. Other Vendors seem to lock it away and require a few hoops to jump. I am working on Xiaomi and i can safely say it is a pain. Hardware is good though.
