Help rooting& unlocking bootloader in 2.3.4

Hi, I have some questions with rooting and unlocking the bootloader for 2.3.4. I had no problems rooting on 2.2. But I would like to try the alien rom, but I have read so many different way to root 2.3.4. Do I need to unlock the bootloader first? And what is the best/safest way to root 2.3.4
