There are a lot of people joining XDA on a daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked
which clutter up the Development and 'Q & A' threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions.

The idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. People are usually
ridiculed for asking questions that other people deem stupid even though it may be a legitimate question. This
leads to new users being afraid to ask questions!

Only provide well mannered help towards users in this thread. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in
the direction where that user can find an answer
and educate himself. If you don't want to answer, at least
point out where to find the answer.

Before posting anything, I strongly advise you to read THIS thread.

Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in Post No. 2, you might find what you need right away.

Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please do come back and read threads in Post No. 2
(coming later as soon as we start getting the guides) to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time
and frustration it will save you in the future!

No abuse towards noobs tolerated here! That means:
NO TROLLING
NO NAME CALLING
NO RIDICULING
NO FLAMING

ASK ANY QUESTION HERE! No question is stupid or irrelevant in this thread. You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.

*A Special Thanks to mark manning for his help in creating this thread*

Yep. It's this one from here, which is for the XCover Pro SM-G715FN, which is my phone.

Ahh so you can flash via TWRP with adb commands from the PC?
https://twrp.me/faq/openrecoveryscript.html, you also can use a mouse.
What I suppose I need to do next is a factory reset from TWRP (since my phone no longer boots normally).
It may need, also you can try with a multidisabler for Samsung, or, Magisk has it in-built.

If that device doesn´t have a custom ROM specifically built for it, then you can´t flash/install any custom ROM.

The most you can search is a GSI, in case the bootloader can be unlocked, and it is a treble compatible device.

Indeed you can. I got a micro-USB to USB-C adapter and connected my mouse with an OTG cable, and it works. I was able to reboot from TWRP (my phone is still alive, no reset needed apparently). It seems that you have to boot once from TWRP, and from then on the phone will boot normally. The screen is still unresponsive when in TWRP, however, so I'll need to connect the mouse for that.

Now to actually do something with TWRP, specifically: make Titanium Backup work.

A question, which is more of a legal one than technical. I think I know the practical answer, but I was wondering if there is any precedent for this case. Its related to a question I asked previously a few posts up.

I use a VERY customisable & unique & powerful launcher, which was a paid app when I purchased it back in GB says, and it still available as a paid app on the playstore today. However, the dev has stopped updating it/developing it, and released the source code onto GitHub, so anyone could potentially compile it, to get an APK.

So, now that the source code is open sourced, does that mean that all the unofficial non PlayStore sources of the APK (as found on the playstore) are now considered legit? and available for use by anyone? ie without making the purchase on the playstore.

My thinking is that the compiled APK on they playstore (ie official APK, CRC binary checked) is not legally allowed to be used, but the practicality of someone who has released the source code to claim their proprietary ownership of that specific APK, to be very low. But I am not a copyright lawyer.

Has there been any precedent for this type of case?

What would XDA's position be in this murky grey area?

I have a legit purchased copy, but now I am thinking if I could suggest doing an APK search to others, outside of the playstore. Or am I directing them into warez

I'm neither a lawyer nor a moderator at XDA, but here are some thoughts.
So, now that the source code is open sourced, does that mean that all the unofficial non PlayStore sources of the APK (as found on the playstore) are now considered legit? and available for use by anyone? ie without making the purchase on the playstore.

There are some practical considerations as well. For those clones on the play store, were they put there before, or after, the original dev put source code on Github? If before, seems to me that is not kosher, though there may be little or no interest in prosecution at this point.

Another detail, is there any way of knowing that the APKs you find anywhere actually came from that Github code, without adding any mystery malware? There are some sites like F-droid that make a point of doing the compile themselves to give some assurance that this did not happen and what you see in the source code is what you get in the APK. But Play store and most other sites do not take this precaution so you really do not know what you are downloading from those other places.

I would suggest that for safety you should either compile it yourself, or have someone you trust do that for you. I don't see any APK in Github, only a single fork with minimal changes to one text file by a person who did not seem to be part of the original team. It may be some time before they have anything ready to compile and release. After that you would have to consider whether you trust this new author.

As for other authors putting clones on Play store, do you really want to trust someone who steals code and passes it off as their original work? If they lie about whose code it was, would they not also lie about whether they added any malware? There is the potential of sending your friends into a mess if they look for alternate APKs and they choose a bad one.

To be clear, I have purchased the original and have installed the latest that is on the playstore, and I have never seen any clones or even ones that have copied the extreme features of this launcher. Its not really anything for me in particular. I have a trusted APK from the dev-playstore. I could check the CRC of the one on my phone & any thing available from elsewhere with a CRC check, but I personally have no need. Its just such a brilliant launcher (except for the very very steep learning curve and poor default set-up) which I have seen nothing that even comes close., if it was kosher, I'd ne telling everyone to get it. I did check if a compiled APK was on the web, and found one that I would guess would be Warez from when it didn't have the source code released, and the file was 1 byte longer; I didnt bother to compare all other bytes.

As for F-Droid, the dev has to make the step to get it included, and since dev is abandoned, this dev has no need or reason to keep it working for newer android versions. On that note, it actually has features that fail in A11 that are working again in A12. Without checking, I think it is because of bugs in A11, not the launcher. Dont even get me started on the Android bug for non-embeded album art, which started around A10 and is still borked in A13 :mad::mad:

So to restate the obvious, the question was a concept test, not a practicality for me, for this app, as I purchased it when it was like back in GB days, and it still works in A13.

PS: Did I mention I loved this launcher....

manual way of installing fonts on droids? on win and lin, we just put them in a special folder, force refresh the font cache, done

i want to add unifonts since it literally has most known fonts, but nothing can pick it up. there used to be a fallback font but i dont see it anymore in the system, vendor, and product partition files and their etc/fonts.xml

seems havoc styles puts the /product/fonts as the main system fonts since havocs add a new theme picks up the fonts only in that foldef

Hi all, my phone recently broke and I had the banking app on it. When I try to run it on the emulator, it crashes. The emulator is MEMU (version 6) and the bank app is OTP Bank HU. Thanks in advance!

Okay so I have Pixel Experience installed on my phone and I don't know why but google recognizes it as a nexus device (whereas it's actually a Redmi device). Is it because of spoofing? If so, is it legal to use it?

Hello everyone!

I am using a Sony Xperia 10 II HK version (XQ-AU52) and my operator in Japan does not have 2G or 3G services. Currently I can use data and SMS but not phone calls. Does that mean I need to enable VoLTE on the device to get phone calls working?

The option to enable VoLTE is missing in the Settings menu. What should I do to fix it?

I see some people suggesting to flash a Japan or SEA firmware to get the option to enable VoLTE. Why does the region customization of firmware affect the availability of the option to enable VoLTE?

Hi all,
I'm having issues unlocking the bootloader on a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. The OEM Unlock slider doesn't show up under developer options, I can't find anything in recovery mode or Odin mode, and the fastboot command line tool always fails with "remote: unknown command" even though it will connect to and see the device (maybe expected because of Samsung's lack of fastboot, I don't know).

Is there something I'm missing, or other options I could try?
Thanks in advance!

Probably the app is detecting that you´re running it in an emulator, for security reasons, it refuses to work, anyway you can redirect here https://www.memuplay.com/support.html, there are also a blog to join in.

Update to the correct custom recovery, format data before attempting, reboot to recovery and try it again.

On my Samsung Note 8, I tried to update the firmware, but instead, the process failed and now the phone just shows a black screen and doesn't turn on at all... Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Try to enter to recovery mode, then you probably need to format data, or go to download mode (reboot to bootloader) from there, and flash the latest firmware, using Odin, the first method your data will be erased, and for the second, if you want to preserve it, don´t use the userdata partition, I mean, any CSC file you find in the firmware.

How hard is it to upgrade to the next Android version on a phone that has the same chipset as another phone which has a ROM of that newer Android version?
What exactly needs to be changed and why?
There is no cookie cutter, all in one 100% complete answer to this question. It depends on the differences between the devices and the differences between their firmwares. The recipe for porting firmware between devices is not the same for all devices.

You'll just have to buckle down and do your own research and use trial and error until you get it pieced together properly. You'll probably cause bootloop with your first attempt or you may even brick the device before you get it 100% correct. You'll be taking your own chances so you need to weigh the risk vs reward.

Hi there I have a question. I'm several threads I often see something that looks like html tags which purpose should be formatting the thread posts and make them more easy to read. However, they looks like being not interpreted both by my mobile browser and my PC browser. Is that normal? Or is there a way to see the formatting?
    1
Can you see the BB codes in this: Hello!? It should look bold. This should also look bold: Hi! How does it look to you?
Sorry I didn't specify it. I'm meaning text contained inside "Code" Tags. Like in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-10-darkjoker360-aosp-10-for-huawei-p10-lite.4008983/

But maybe I already find the solution on my own: text inside code tags has formatting disabled by default.
Anyway I believe formatting text inside code tags should be avoidednas it makes everything less readable..

Android-x86 Instagram doesn't show front/text in Instagram app

I am running Android-x86 and I want to run Instagram on it. New APK versions only run with this blurry front:

    View attachment 5923145
    View attachment 5923147
I have tried a lot to fix it, well to the best of my ability. I installed old APKs and Instagram looks normal. But I can't login because the APKs are outdated.

Can anyone please help me to fix this? What do I have to do? Is it even possible to fix? Is anyone successfully running Instagram (not the lite version) inside Android-x86?

    Thanks in advance
You could just use your web browser instead

    ZTE V970 Brick?

    Hi,

I've been trying to install Bruno's ROM for this phone (cam with all chinese apps). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856578

but have a big problem. I tried my best to follow the instructions but, really couldn't work out if I was doing things in the right order.. is there an actual step- by step for this procedure? I know I'm a noob and read this read that I am an idiot etc. etc. but I thought if I used to ROM on that page and the software recommended it would be easy.

    Here's what I did:

Downloaded all the files as told.

Tried to 'flash a custom recovery' as here http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html

but it did not mention how to use the ZTE custom recovery file http://d-h.st/Vgt

I'm also not sure at all that the 'MediaTek drivers' were installed properly. The phone never appeared in the Device manager.

I opened SP flash tool and followed this: http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html

and selected the 'scatter file' from the unzipped Bruno ROM (took a while to realise had to unzip it to get the file!!!)

I noticed most of the boxes on the scatter file were unchecked but carried on and ignored a warning message about the phone may not be able to boot (the tutorial said to ignore it).

I had to click 'download' then plug the phone in and eventually I got the red loading bar. This finished... then nothing else.. no purple bar.. nothing.

So after waiting a few minutes I unplugged the phone.

It now appears to be a total brick. What did I do wrong? Why no purple bar? Were the scatter items supposed to be unchecked? What was the 'custom recovery' file for? Because the SP flash prog never asked for it.

Is there any point in trying it again or is the phone dead?

    Thanks for any help..

    Theo
