Frequently Asked Questions
ChromeOS

This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems.

Q1: What is a Chromebook?
Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud.

Q2 What ChromeOS?
Chrome OS is an operating system designed by Google and based upon the Linux kernel. Google announced the project in July 2009, conceiving it as an operating system in which both applications and user data reside in the cloud

Q3: What Chomebooks (will) support Google Play Store?

Q4: How do I use ChromeOS?
See Training for Google Apps’.
This free, By Google extension delivers interactive training and walkthroughs for a slate of Google services, including Calendar, Classroom, Docs, Drive, Forms, Gmail, Google+, Groups, Hangouts, and more.

Q5: How do I sideload apks?
Q5: Why does the ........................................................................................................?
Replace this block of text with a short answer for the above question. If the answer is complicated or otherwise lengthy, avoid the temptation to provide a full answer here. If the answer is truly that involved, this should be answered in another thread outside of this document. The answer then should provide a brief summary or overview and direct the reader to the document providing a full coverage of the topic.

Chromebook enabling usb boot

Hello friends! I am currently using an early model toshiba chromebook 2 looking to try to boot REmix OS from usb. I have already made a bootable usb with the operating system and have placed the device into developer mode ( am currently using crouton with ubuntu and it runs fine but its running precise and was looking for xenial but can not figure out how to run a more updated version of ubuntu so i figured usb boot to be the next best thing). I have opened up a shell and gained root access and thought i enabled usb boot with crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1 but all i get upon boot is the usual "os verification off" screen when I input ctrl+u a black screen will flash for approx. 2 seconds and that then the device goes back to the os verification screen and eventually to a normal boot. any help would be appreciated. I work two jobs and will only be able to update once a day usually. I apologize in advance.

Quick question as I'm new to Chromebooks from July.

I've been using the orginal Chromebook Pixel and have loved it so far, it is my understanding that the original Pixel will not be getting Android apps, however with what little understanding of ChromeOS under the hood in mind, would it not be possible to add that functionality into the original Pixel as well as other Chromebooks which are unsupported, or is there an underlying issue preventing such a thing that I've skipped over or am unaware of?

Thanks, hopefully somebody can shed some light as I've searched high and low for info but no luck!

I think that it is just that they don't want to spend the time to write the code required
android apps to Google Chrome books is getting rolled out very slowly so they must be having to write specific code for each chrome book model.

Hi

Just wondering if Google has rolled out support to any more Chromebooks (on a stable channel) than the three it mentioned in May? If not is their any word of when they intend to do this?

I have a Toshiba 2 CB30-B-104 (HD version) and live in the UK.

Hi,

I have a couple of XE303C12 in the family.
I updated couple of phones to Android 6 (root and upgrade ROM) and asked myself, why not do that trick also in the Chromebook?
But is there anything out there like updating the system to software from newer chromebooks?
Because I can't find it...

Thanks,
Johan

Edit: Just realised I am duplicating johnjingle above. Apologies! Thought I had clicked johnjingle's link and found it to lead to a different thread. My mistake - Too many tabs, tiny phone screen.

I can't post a link at the moment but if you google "ifixit managed chromebook" (without quotes) you will find a guide/walkthrough you can try. Basically it involves opening the device, removing the write-protect screw on the motherboard, pulling the battery for 30 seconds, then putting the device in developer mode and in a root shell using vpd-l to view current serial#, & vpd-s to write new.
