Plan on buying direct from Google for the first time. If I port to a U.S. carrier, will I rely upon them for updates and not get them when Google releases them? Can the carrier, and will they likely, lock the bootloader?

You get the updates directly from Google. Verizon did something incredible were they actually released an update, monthly security patch I believe, even before Google did.

Thanks for this noob thread! Just watched the live event. Was wondering about the Titan Security chip that they announced in the P3 & Slate. The guy said it "protects the integrity of the OS". Will this prevent rooting and stuff like Xposed?

I would imagine it's not going to help matters. Regardless, Verizon will be utterly locked down.

Is there any confirmation yet of whether the bootloader can be unlocked on the Pixel 3 via the standard `fastboot flashing unlock` if I buy from the google store? I need a phone that supports T-mobile's 600 and 700MHz bands, but don't want to have to compromise my phone just to unlock the bootloader, so am hoping that the Pixel 3 is the device for me.

This is my first time ever being interested in a Google phone with the regular pixel 3, I'm a long time Samsung/HTC guy. I am interested most in the camera, do you lose any functionality when unlocking the bootloader and/or custom roms (AOSP) for the camera? Samsung/Sony both lose basic funtionality and its always been a hhuge turn off. Being "Stock Android" I imagine not but would like to know. I was waiting to see how treble treated the unlockable snapdragon s9 but it seems like treble is useless and the pixel seems more enticing now.

thanks for any help.

If anyone sees a review that shows the notification LED, please link it here. Curious to see if it's the same as they did on the Pixel 2.
