from that article.. (which is from Nov 2014)...
...Even though Google has yet to enable this feature on a Nexus device, this move seems to indicate that the company could be preparing to go that route in the future....
SO has Google enabled this yet?

In any case, with the 2013 X approaching 2yrs since release, it may not make a difference. I mean there is a good chance that this 5.1 Lollipop update could be the last... why would Moto under Lenovo continue to support a 2yr old device, rather than focusing its resources (people and money) on current and/or future devices?

when flashing recovery. are you...

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader

then trying to enter recovery?

Do you see any messages on your phone's screen when flashing?

IF your bootloader is still 30.B7, try option 5 at -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61142892&postcount=2 with the 4.4.4 SBF... or wait until the 5.1 SBF for your model/carrier comes out, then try option 5 again.

You can try flashing TWRP, by using option 6 there, just replace stock recovery with TWRP 2.8.6.0 (see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217 )

Thanks for replying, I saw few messages like <variable not supported>.
I tried mfastboot and flashed recovery. But again when I am entering into recovery it is still showing stock recovery. Also I am able to see my files and they are still safe.

Also I tried to know my model using
Code:
fastboot getwar all
. It's asia retail - ghost - 4.4.4

So I must flash only 5.1 Asia Retail? ( I tried few other 5.1 firmware of my phone model XT1052 but RSDlite is not proceeding after 2nd step.)
To be noted when I am flashing Asia.Retail.4.4.4 firmware it is successfully flashing but it is again showing boot animation and getting shuts off.

<variable not supported> errors when flashing are fine and do not impact anything

The way you are typing your posts, it appears you are booting the phone to Fastboot AP screen, using mfastboot to flash, then going right into REcovery... you don't mention/confirm that you are flashing recovery, then doing the reboot-bootloader, BEFORE trying to enter recovery.

Are you flashing first... then doing the reboot-bootloader step, BEFORE attempting to enter recovery?

Fastboot GetVar All will give you information based on the software on the phone itself. So if you have an ATT XT1058 but flashed it with the XT1053 REtail rom, the XT1053 rom's info is what you'll get back.

Yes, I flashed first, then rebooted to bootloader using reboot-bootloader command and tried to acess recovery. But, it's same result. TWRP is flashing fine but in recovery it's showing stock one.

Great info here, thanks :)
So, it is showing Ret.Asia.4.4.4 - ghost in Fastboot getvar. Should I have to wait for Ret.Asia.5.1? or I can flash anything which is compatiable to my model? At the bottom of my back panel of my phone it is XT1052. I read previously read your thread regarding flashing/upgrading.

Not sure why then... I haven't seen that happen. Try other versions of TWRP?

Because your phone is just shutting itself off after the boot animation, and re-flashing stock 4.4.4 didn't fix it, I would suggest waiting on the Ret.Asia 5.1 for your XT1052. If/When the full sbf leaks, flash it manually using mfastboot.

Hi man, could you send me a screen capture of the 'about phone' screen too compare the build number with mine? TIA.

hey quick question just to get confirmation...

I'm currently on a locked at&t xt1058, with root on 4.4.4
Since the ota for 5.1 just got out for at&t I want to update, but before I just want to check if I got the steps correctly to retain root:
- first, unlock my bootloader via sunshine (yep, haven't done it yet)
- then return to complete stock by flashing this via rsd http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/fxz-moto-x-4-4-4-att-xt1058-t2866752
(this will also erase my custom recovery, yes? I'm using safestrap)
- then update normally through ota push, or by sideloading
- and finally I can install TWRP get root back here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217

fyi my bootloader version is : 30.B2 (I believe this is the one from 4.2.2)

Am I good to go? Thanks!

30.B2 is the bootloader version of 4.4. Not 4.2.2.

You can't use sunshine on 4.4.4, you'll need 4.4.2. If your bootloader truly is 30.B2, then you can flash the 4.4.2 SBF first so that everything on your phone is at a consistent level, use Sunshine to unlock, then update to 4.4.4 (either OTA or flashing the 4.4.4 SBF), then take the 5.1 OTA, then root.

Yes, those links for 4.4.4 SBF and rooting on 5.1 would be appropriate... IF you safely downgrade to 4.4.2 and use Sunshine first.

I have full root on 4.4.4 though, since I flashed it through safestrap. And when I run the preliminary tests with sunshine it says my device is good to go for unlocking the bootloader so I do believe I can unlock it now?

I don't know for sure what happens when safestrap is being run, rather than the host OS.

I would think the safest thing is flash your phone back to stock before proceeding with Sunshine... or asking in the original Sunshine thread where Beaups and Jcase hang out.

Yes, I tried TWRP patched version as well as other official versions available on their website.
Eagerly waiting for XT1052 Ret.Asia 5.1 release.
Thank you so much for helping, I will let you know the results after it's release. :)

Something on your phone is not what the OTA expects to see...

The only ways around this is are:

1. flash back to 100% stock using the latest SBF for your carrier and model phone, then retry

2. Put the OTA zip on the /SDCard of your phone, and follow the SIDE LOAD section of -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/ref-return-to-stock-recovery-rooted-t3027079

3. Wait for the 5.1 SBF for your carrier/model to become available, and flash it to your phone using mfastboot.

I have 2 phones with cracked screens a sprint moto x and a verizon moto g I need to copy down all the pictures and stuff that are on them but since they both had a lock they don't show up on the computer. you first have to unlock the phone in order for it to show up on the computer. Is there anyway in can copy everything from the phone in fastboot or any other way?

Tnx in advanced

No root access

hi thanks for your reply
Unfortunately the link you give me
You need to be root or the bootloader unlocked, and on my phone this is not possible because it is the version of Att & T will not unlock

a question can install version 4.4.4 over version 4.4.4

No you don't. Not to follow the side load section. IF Someone has shared the OTA file, you can download it to your phone, put it on your /sdcard (or in the download folder on the /SDcard)... boot to stock recovery and install.

Now, if someone hasn't shared the OTA, then yes.. you'd need to be rooted to grab the OTA from /CACHE so you can copy/move it to /SDCard.

Yes, you can flash a 4.4.4 SBF onto a phone running 4.4.4... (that is what I said in the first choice I gave yoU) Please see the link in my signature on Perparing for and taking an OTA.
