Thank you for your great advice!
Yes, i am deffently in a better state than the person you mentioned above. everything works on the phone except the home/fingerprint button. the "unactive" is just annoying but does not impede the functionality of the phone.

P.s I wanted to know if you have come across any non google version of the firmware (or for that matter is there any way to remove THE google with out the phone immediately shutting down? Will installing microg help in this?)

I don't know much about the microg project so I can't say but I suspect it would be difficult. I don't know of any non google firmware or any custom ROMs for the Atom at this time. I have used J.R. Rummy's Rom Toolbox (paid version) or a similar app that can freeze system apps (with root access) on some phones to 'Freeze' much of the Google related stuff including 'google services' without it shutting the phone down. I'd do a backup first (with TWRP if it's now installed and working as I describe in my message thread on that) and then freeze all the google stuff one at a time. Unfortunately with the newer Android OS versions google has itself intertwined into so many things and apps that you may find some apps won't work properly if too much google apps are removed.

Very strange! I've never seen anything like that and even a Google search doesn't want to give any results and simply defaults to a search for 'Inactive'. If you have the phone rooted I would install J.R. Rummy's 'Rom Toolbox' and use the App manager in it to freeze all your Apps other than the standard Android OS apps. Reboot and see if that fixes it as I would assume from the spelling (Unactive) that this message is coming from an installed App. Then unfreeze your apps one by one to see which one might be causing this message. I could be wrong on this but the spelling 'Unactive' is unlikely to come from the Android OS as it's a strange spelling for Inactive.

Other than that message everything else works okay ?

I found this on the Unihertz forum since it appears a couple other people were seeing this 'Unactive' problem:

Hello, I'm a front end developer, I have the same issue, Unactive, is still present and home button still doesn't work at all, it's definitely related to an" IMEI fault," this device use mtk Chip, it's a known issue, something went wrong into nvram during update or recovery! , maybe unihertz support can provide both part of the factory recovery image.. We need to fix nvram.

I've contacted Unihertz support and they have provided me with detailed instructions on how to perform a factory reset with the image file.

I'm a games software engineer by trade so I'm used to following detailed instructions. After many hours struggling with poorly translated Chinese and installing drivers onto my PC I managed to flash my Atom. After flashing my Atom the phone appeared to be back to its factory state. The UI looked OK and the buttons worked.

I didn't install any apps on my Atom and just waited to see what would happen. Then the resets started happening again, I've put the phone away in a cupboard and will try again when I have the energy to try the phone again :'(

---------- Post added at 11:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:23 AM ----------

persin, So it would appear you may have overwritten a part of NVRAM where the IMEI is located in the process of flashing it so it may be best to contact Unihertz support on their forum. Hopefully you will not have the same problem front end developer mentioned above had - he might have a hardware problem or maybe just didn't get the instructions quite write which apparently were heavy on Chinglish ;)

Good to see you back sd_shadow. Yes I decided it wasn't a useful thing to have the walkie talkie function either. I reassigned the button in settings to open the Camera app for quick camera access.

Hello, I'm the front end web dev.
I was able to fix both IMEI and serial, but not the Unactive part of the issue, home button and fingerprint sensor is still dead, to fix it, I tried almost every "radio" rom for the MTK Helio P23 MT6763 I found on internet, but still no luck, yet ... I guess I need a working atom to fix this issue. or a full backup from a rooted Atom.
Sorry for my english, I'm Italian, I try my best to help.

Sounds like it would be best to contact Unihertz directly at this point rather than posting on the Unihertz forum. Here: [email protected]

Excuse me.First of all,Thank you very much for your method, I have succeeded in root. But I would like to ask if your mobile phone has a long boot-up time after ROOT. My mobile phone has a boot-up time of more than 5 minutes. I installed magisk, xposed and some modules,do you have any solution?
    look forward to your reply:)

It might take a long boot up the first time but after that it should be normal boot time. If you haven't tried already try rebooting a couple times. If it is still taking a long time to boot up I would strongly suspect Xposed as I have seen a lot of problems with it including slowness. Try uninstalling Xposed completely and see if that makes the difference. I know a lot of Xposed fans will say it is not a problem but I have expeienced it first hand on a number of phones. Uninstalling it made a huge difference. It might be that it causes problems only with certain phones / OS versions or builds but I think that is what likely is the problem on your phone.

    Cannot install Magisk Module

    I have rooted the Atom!

(After learning SP Flash tool, WWr_Mtk, Magisk, and scatter files, I've done it!)

I will post the files shortly. The versions will be what is on my phone currently - one system update shortly after receiving the Atom.

Brief procedure: get SP Flash tool, the scatter file I created, and the atom patched boot image.

Use SP Flash tool and newly created scatter file to upload atom_patched_boot.img to the "boot" partition on the phone. To do this, go to the Download tab. Next to "Scatter Loading File" press Choose and select the scatter file.
Ensure none of the boxes in the bottom are checked. Then check "boot" and click on the Location to select the atom_patched_boot.img file. The display will read Begin Address 0x0000000018a00000, End Address 0x00000000193c75d3, Region EMMC_USER. Press Download, connect your phone, and if the drivers are working properly (and your phone feels like it) it will flash the image to that portion of the phone. If successful, you'll get a green check mark.

Boot, and then install Magisk Manager via the APK from their website.

It didn't even need the bootloader unlocked or anything. I'm impressed with Magisk.

Software versions that will be in the ROMs posted shortly:
    Android Version 8.1.0
Android Security Patch Level May 5, 2018
    Baseband Version MOLY.LR12A.R2.MP.V26.1
    Kernel Version 4.4.95 (gcc version 6.3.1 20170109 (Linaro GCC 6.3-2017.02) ) [email protected] #11 Mon Oct 8 15:27:55 CST 2018
    Build Number Unihertz_Atom_20181008
    Custom Build Version alps-mp-o1.mp1

If needed I could post the whole system/vendor portions of the rom.

I managed to install Magisk but I cannot install Magsik Module though. It says unable to extract zip file!

Red UNACTIVE top right corner/finger scanner home bytton not work

Hello everyone, i tried to root my atom following https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78530359&postcount=57 instruction, and even seemed to succeed, but root did not appear at the end. Then i flashed fresh official rom (eventually tried every 3 of them) and when i finished my home button/finger scanner didnt work and word UNACTIVE in red on the top right corner appeared and still stays there. imei 1 and 2 was changed to 1111111111111 and 2222222222222. I literally tried everything, does anyone have any idea what to do?

Do you patch boot image file before? As the new boot image is coming with new security update so you need a new patched boot image which is not available in this thread right now. Please try to flash original firmware again and let me know if problem is still exited.

Do anyone know how to increase the headset volume? This new chipset we can't use normal *#*#3646633 anymore.

Hi, here are steps, I did:
    1. Flashed patched by magisk boot image. Didn't help.
    2. Flashed original firmware, can't exactly remember but UNACTIVE appeared there.
    3. Tried every possible combination like every Rom patched/not patched. But still UNACTIVE.
4 Contacted unihertz support, been told to send them the device(which I can't because of our country policy) and can not be repaired remotely.

Excuse my poor english, best regards and thank everyone

Recently I just updated the Unihertz Atom's OTA firmware update... Now, the home button and fingerprint scanner does not work any more. Would anyone have a fix? Haven't heard back yet from Unihertz.

... me too I am looking for a google-free custom ROM. A good choice would be Lineage OS in my opinion, but I did not see any ongoing developement in this direction at this time (March 2019). Please let us know if you have found an alternative. Thanks!

How to ROOT, Update to latest Unihertz ROM without Custom recovery or ADB or Fastboot.
I got the Unihertz Atom "How to Flash a ROM" manual and latest ROM here:
and downloaded the MTK drivers (already had them but reinstalled anyway) . Backup your Apps and data any way you can before starting unless your phone is just new. I'm not responsible if you brick your phone but this worked for me and was a quick and easy way to update to Unihertz's latest ROM which has some important updates and fixes.
    - The "how to flash a ROM" has links for the drivers.
    - Turn on developer options (click build number 7 or more times)
    - Turn on OEM unlock
    - Forget using the flash tool they mention and get SP Flash tool latest 5.1828 version.
    - Open the ROM zip file you downloaded and unzip to a folder then copy the boot-verified.img file to your Atom.
    - Install latest Magisk. Turn on Wifi.
    - Start Magisk and click Install then find the boot image (rename it boot.img from the boot-verified.img) just to make sure Magisk sees it.
    - After clicking install then click patch boot image.
    - After it is done copy the patched_boot.img back to your PC and rename it boot-verified.img and copy that back into the unzipped ROM folder of the latest ROM update (currently 11-30-2018).
    - Start SP Flash tool - load the scatter file from that unzipped ROM.
    - Turn off your Atom and hook it up to the USB on your computer.
    - Make sure the 'Connection' setting in SP Flash tool is set to 'Battery installed' or Auto.
    - When ready click on the SP Flash tool "Download" button on the main page then push the power button briefly on you Atom but not long enough to turn it on. The download should start and when finished SP tool will show a big check mark and 'Done' - then disconnect the USB cable.
    - Turn on your phone and you will have the new setup screen where you will need to do the usual setup stuff.
    - Install latest Magisk manager App
    - Start Magisk Manager and you will see Magisk is already installed and you will have ROOT.
    - I suggest installing ROM Toolbox by J Rummy and freezing any Apps you don't like

Nice! Do you know if there's a way on Mac OS?

While there are Windows emulators for the Mac OS I wouldn't trust trying anything like the above without a PC and at least windows 7. At least I'm not aware of a Mac version of the SP Flash tool and I think there are way to many possibilities for something to go wrong doing those operations on a Mac. I'd pick up a used PC before I'd try anything like this with a Mac.
I've picked some up for as little as $20 that would do the job.

    Can the Atom do HCE?

When I try to enable Card Emulation under NFC Settings, I get "No secure element" and if I try a different app, I get "NFC configuration file invalid". This is actually odd, since Google Pay works (...ostensibly by emulating cards).

It would be pretty disappointing if a new phone such as this could not provide this functionality.

    Any ideas?

      TWRP for Atom

I have patched TWRP now to work on the Atom on the Oreo 8.1 version dated 11-30-2018. I'll upload it shortly. I installed TWRP by using SP Flash tool and also installed the patched Magisk boot and the stock preloader. Use the scatter file from the 11-30-2018 ROM I mention above - this one:
      11-30-2018 latest ROM

A couple notes on SP Flash tool - my Avast antivirus doesn't see a problem with it but Virustotal.com will say it has trojans. Since I'm not sure I only use it when I have Shadow Defender enabled on my PC (freezes everything in your system so no changes are made permanent) and then I disable antivirus. Upon reboot everything is back to the way it was before you enabled Shadow Defender.

Download the TWRP I modified for the Atom here:
Link no longer valid - see the link in post #70 below.

---------- Post added at 08:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:22 PM ----------

[/COLOR]I'm noting one issue with TWRP recovery. Don't use any apps the have a "reboot to recovery" option - not even TWRP which has reboot to recovery option or it will just power off and you won't be able to start it up again without reflashing the recovery, boot and preloader. However if you just use the Volume UP and Power buttons to get into recovery from a powered off state it works fine. So always power down then use Volume UP and Power held down until you see the first Unihertz screen and then release both buttons and it will boot into TWRP.

      Hi,
I just received my ATOM via KickStarter!
It's done very well, comfortably fit in my hands. If I could make it rooted, I would play more..
      2
After a little over a year of use, the Atom just all of a sudden froze and turned off. Whether it turned off because I started pushing the power button due to freeze or all by itself, no idea.
It has not turned back on since then :(.
This occured right after a phonecall, while checking system messages from the main screen (i.e. to see why the phone beeped during the call).
Now that I've thought about it, there was one odd thing I think I noticed: I had received an SMS (from a person I know) during the call and after the brief message there were a bunch of emoji at the end of the message. This kind of struck me as odd, because I did not recall seeing such an emoji collection in the mainscreen message area before and also this person practically never uses emojis like that.
So, did displaying the message trigger something odd? Who can say...

Anyway, after some tries and retries at pushing button combinations and charging overnight I have since been trying to fix this device by flashing it. And nothing helps. I have experience of flashing devices, but not of flashing a MediaTek phone and it all seems really messy :(. I got the official ROM from Unihertz and there was also supposed to be an official flash tool, but that flash tool seems to be only downloadable from Baidu (or somesuch) and I cannot access it. I have downloaded multiple versions of the flash tool and tried them, but aside from the ones which claim to be too old to support the firmware version, I always get stuck in the same step: DA 100%, red bar. And then nothing :(.

When I attach the device I get a "MediaTek USB Port" (currently COM12... I think it was, like COM3, originally...). I've tried various versions of the driver too. When the DA 100% red bar has been done, that device "sticks" in the device manager and no longer disconnects, but nothing like a flashing operation still happens. If I then deattach the device, it is no longer recognized by the computer at all. On Windows it just says "Device descriptor request failed". On Linux (I also tried with Linux and get exactly to the same stage as I do on Windows) dmesg shows a similar conclusion: The device is sufficiently offline to not be able to communicate even the "basics" of USB signaling? That can be cured by long pressing the powerbutton, after which I again get successfully to the DA 100% stage. As if that helped .

In desperation, I've tried opening the device up and removing the battery. I also tried connecting testpads on the mother board to ground as suggested in a Youtube video. Nothing has helped in any way: this thing still behaves exactly the same as it did when I realized I have to start troubleshooting it.

The worst thing is that this is right about the only phone I own to which nothing has been done as far as customizations go (the point kind of was to get an easy to carry phone I would not mess up). I bought it for four things: Calls, SMS, Signal, Spotify. No rooting, no other apps installed. Nothing :(. It never even got wet or thrown about, I only bought it because it was small and had a headphone jack, not because it was "rugged". And now this mess :crying:.

Does anyone here have any idea what I could do now? Please tell me if you though of a possible solution while reading this. I have already posted in Unihertz's own forums and emailed them, but I don't know whether they watch the forums or respond to emails, so I figured I'd try here too.

UPDATE: Unihertz replied to my email very soon after I sent it! And when I requested the flash tool they replied to that within just a couple of hours!! :good: I now have the official flash tool version. Unfortunately it behaves exactly the same as the later versions of the flash tool, so I have still not been able to resume from the DA 100% stage :(.

I know this is way late to respond but in case you still have your DA Atom sitting around I've got a suggestion. Most likely you were hit by malware in an multimedia message. The trick using SP Flash tool in this sort of case usually involves careful timing of plugging in the phone to your computer. l've brought back apparently dead Unihertz Jelly Pro models this way and no reason it won't work for the Atom or nearly any MediaTek based phones. If your battery is run all the way down you may be able to do this even without the timing being exact. You just start SP Flashtool and have it ready to start a flash then click start and then plug in your phone if the battery is dead it should work. If not it is a matter of plugging in the phone in the middle of a reboot or after holding down the power button for around 30 seconds and then plug into the computer. Keep trying different times to plug in once you have requested SP Flashtool to start a flash. Good luck
