I've just got this bug this morning but the Nova activity shortcut says permission denied when I try to run it. Anyone else have this?

Nexus 6P v8.0 November 2017 security update.
For those who has this issue and cant Launch SetupWizardActivity by Nova launcher fix you have to do this first.

Probably you dont have enabled the option to launch the wizard (see the screenshot).

Fisrt of all you need root and Termux app installed (or you can do it by adb by pc)
In my case i had the app instaled before the bug happened so i didnt have to install it. Otherwise i wouldn't be able to do it cause it didnt let me to install apps.

I found these commands in this thread. (post 5)
You open termux and execute these commands one by one:

su
pm enable com.google.android.setupwizard/com.google.android.setupwizard.SetupWizardActivity
settings put secure user_setup_complete 0

Now you have enabled SetupWizard and luckily you would be able to launch it using the nova launcher fix.

You will see it above the " Activaing cellular service.."
Expect this can help anyone trying to solve this anoying issue without factory reset...

Million Thanks!

Same happened to me. Stock Pixel XL, 128GB, Oreo. Even applied the latest September update but no dice.

Do the "Nova Launcher" fix.

1. Install Nova Launcer. nb. Play Store not installing anything for me, so downloaded the apk with Chrome (google for Nova Launcher.apk).
2. Allowed from unknown Sources
3. Opened Nova from App drawer (or can set as default launcher).
4. Hold down on empty space -> Widgets -> scroll the bar across to Activities. Hold down and drag onto home screen somewhere.
5. Scroll down to Setup Wizard and hold down on "SetupWizardUpgradeActivity".
6. Complete the setup options and candy!
Thanks a lot. It worked for me. I just updated to Oreo March update today and experienced this weird UI/data issue.

Same issue on Nexus 6

I have the same issue. Details of the device:

Nexus 6 - stock Android
Android 7.0
Not rooted

Rebooted the phone when the phone seemed hung up. The notifications, home and recent buttons stopped working after the reboot. Only back button is working. I can't enable the cellular data as well. Interesting, but may not be notable ,is when the phone was rebooted and these functions we're lost, vibrate on key press was enabled.(which wasn't the case before)

Running setup wizard through Nova Launcher seems to be only successful approach, besides complete reset. I prefer not to reset the phone. But unfortunately I don't see the SetupWizardUpgradeActivity or setupTestActivity under setupWizard.

1) Does the phone need to be rooted to get that option.
2) Are there any pre-steps that need to be run to get that option .
3) I saw some screenshots from others showing multiple activities under setupWizard, but I only see one action about cellular provider activation task on my phone.

Any help is appreciated. I hate to do a complete reset.

BTW : I am able to download and install apps from app store.

I can't find SetupWizardActivity or setupTestActivity or updateActivity under setupWizard.

I have termux app installed. Do I need to root the phone or unlock bootloader before I execute the following commands ? Or can I simply launch termux and type in the following at the command prompt?

su
pm enable com.google.android.setupwizard/com.google.android.setupwizard.SetupWizardActivity
settings put secure user_setup_complete 0

Do the above enable root for that session ? It seems like it is resetting the user setup status to 0, do that the device initiates setup step.

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't get this to work, when I went on the setup wizard option it said something along the lines of authorisation denied :(

LineageOS 14.1, Sony SP huashan, happily reporting that the Nova launcher trick worked.
One day phone soft rebooted for no reason, then it appeared as it did wiped the settings on its own, but apps were still present... then the UI issues, apps wouldn't install from Play Store, contacts were lost and couldn't sync, etc.
So here's what I did:

1) Installed Nova launcher through APKPure
2) Touch-hold on empty area -> Widgets - Activities -> Setup Wizard -> .SetupWizardExitActivity
3) That's it.

Hi all! I've been having the same issue you all are so I downloaded Nova and when I get to the Setup Wizard and press on it, it just says 'Connecting... (.carrier.ActivationActivity)' but doesn't do anything. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for everyone's help so far!

This just happened to me today on my Moto E4 VZW prepaid unlocked. I was using my phone like normal then when I pulled it back out of my pocket it was almost as if it was factory restored. All of my icons on the home screen were gone, my wallpaper changed, yet no apps were uninstalled. I still had all of my media. I was also logged out of Google for some reason and when I tried to log in it said that this device had been reset. But the home button and the recent app button weren't working. I was also unable to pull down the notification shade all the way.

I wish I had seen ozvic's post before I factory reset my phone. Just spent 2 hours logging into all of my services. This sounds like an Android 7.0+ glitch.

Has anyone had this happen on a Fire tablet?

It's a brand new HD 8 and has the Play Store installed. Luckily Nova is my go-to launcher on things so that's already installed. I was able to add Fire Setup to my home screen and get the notification shade and home button working again, but the recents button still doesn't work. It's on the screen now though, so I guess that's something.

So I downloaded to Nova software from Chrome, and can follow the instructions until it goes to 'SetupWizard' or whatever. I can't seem to find that in activities. Anyone have an answer or suggestions? Really trying to avoid a factory reset that may not even work!

Solving Android Oreo 8.1 home and recent buttons not working

Try the link below. It worked for me with my Lenovo Tab 4 8. The problem started after a problematic Android update to Oreo 8.1.

h_t_t_p_s_:_/_/stackoverflow.com/questions/36194962/android-emulatorandroid-studio-home-button-not-working-and-giving-logcat-i-w

(Remove the "_", the XDA forum preventing me submitting this answer with a link).

Although the link refers to the Android Emulator, it works with a physical device. If you have not Android Studio installed with ADB or if you are not a developer, you may try to switch to another user ("Guest" for example), and switch back to your user.

The root cause is that the setup (from the update?) hasn't flagged as completed (due to some problem or bug during the update in my case), the Android OS thinks setup is still running and kind of disables the home and recent buttons.

Hope that helps!

God bless you! Best regards
