I also can confirm that isopropyl alcohol works. In my case I've left it first just for under 2 hours and after turning the phone on, scanner worked... for 5 seconds more or less... So I've soaked it in alcohol again and left it for the night, and now it's working for a few hours already without any hiccups.

TL;DR: If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.

It worked for me, used only a minute. Thank you...

I started having this issue yesterday after touching my phone in the gym session while my hands were wet. I still have the FP section in settings though but the button is dead and not recognizing anything
I don't think that I have access to IPA right now but I am trying to soak it with ethanol gel tonight I hope it will work .

Edit : It does work !! It took me less than 3 hours

I had this issue yesterday, i decided the wash the home button like people above with just water. I turned the phone back on and then the phone locked up, bricked, as I was entering the menu settings. Bricked and stayed bricked with screen on and orange battery light flashing as I only had 8% battery. Couldnt turn it on or off. Nothing would respond.

I left it hoping battery would go flat and turn off and went to bed. Woke up to find it had turned off. Put in on charger. Fully charged and then turned it back on. Home button now working again.

SOLVED: Place a film of Baby Wipes, between your thumb and the fingerprint sensor or scanner and keep rubbing on the scanner up and down continuously. In about a minute or two, the screen would start responding to the scanner's touch. Drop the wipes and try normally. Pop me an email if it worked for you at [email protected], just to say thanks.

I tried everything. Here's what finally worked for me. Sent phone back to HTC. Probably worst decision I ever made,. Received phone back 4 months later after several message exchanges with the BBB. HTC finally took note how abysmal their customer support was and sent me a new phone. Bottom line, the phone is not water proof by any standard. Do not get it wet! I wouldn't even sneeze on it.

I can't thank everyone enough for the help! I tried wipe cache partition it didn't work.. Tried cleaning with hand sanitizer and baby wet wipes still didn't work.. I gave up, downloaded a home button app on play store and miraculously, the actual home button works!

2 nights ago my fingerprint /home button stopped working on my HTC u11, tried everything on here apart from isopropyl alcohol , HTC live chat told me to do a factory reset this didn't fix the problem , I lost finger print scanner in menu after this as well. They want me to pay to send it back so they can look at it, $50aud to inspect it and $40usd for parts delivery, I'm like what parts you don't even know what's wrong with it. Tomorrow I'll buy some isopropyl alcohol ..... Hope it works

HTC apparently have no idea about this issue I told them even a monkey could google it and see how many ppl have this issue.

I had the same issue with my HTC Ultra.
What i did:
1.started the phone in Safe Mode(hold volume down button, when after restart the logo is shining)
2.removed the fingerprint as a option to unlock the phone and removed all fingerprints copies.
3.restart again the phone to start normally.

Isopropyl Alcohol helped!

The problem with my U11 started about 24 hours ago from now, after having the phone in the bathroom and having couple of water drops on it. The same happened many times before without any problem as the phone claims to be water resistant, so nothing unusual or new.

After this, I have noticed Fingerprint/Home button was not working and appeared to be pressed constantly with a "Cover the fingerprint scanner completely" message on the screen and was not responding to any touches.

I also had problem with charging as the scanner behaved as it was constantly touched triggering the screen on again and again and somehow interrupting charge process. Had to remove all fingerprints and disabled the unlock feature via fingerprint/home button touch.

Here's what I have tried:
  • rebooting
  • rebooting in safe mode
  • removing all fingerprints and trying to re-add, but without luck (getting "try to cover the scanner completely" message in red as it was already covered)
  • wiping the cache partition
  • used hair dryer to dry out if there was some fluid inside
  • soaking fingerprint sensor with drops of water
  • washing the whole phone! (as U11 meant to be water resistant)
  • and finally what helped was dropping isopropyl alcohol on scanner, rubbing and tapping it with a pad with for a minute or so

I have used several alcohol prep pads saturated with 70% isopropyl alcohol - squeezed it over the scanner and used the same button to rub and tap.

Best guess here is that some dirt particles or maybe drained fluid remainings were accumulated over/under the scanner that was causing the problem and alcohol cleaned it out.

I turned the phone off applied the alcohol, waited 24 hrs. It didn't work, turned it off reapplied the alcohol waited 24 hrs and it worked patience is the key here
