Just got my refurbished Nook HD+. Does it have to be rooted to get the correct information? I have made a backup of my stock and installed the emmc check from the Play store and it is saying I have the affected chip. This was done while running stock.
So if I have the affected chip, what exactly does that mean? I was planing on running CM 10.1.3 on it which I think is not affected. Will my device get slow as the memory fills up?
If you're going to run CM 10.1.3-stable, you're good to go. You don't have to worry about anything.
If however, you're planning to install CM 10.2 or decide to upgrade to it; you may have issues with the performance being degraded, as CM 10.2 is based on Android 4.3; and 4.3 introduced a new way of managing storage, using something called
TRIM in attempt to increase performance.
If you upgrade to CM 10.2, and then revert back to Stock ROM, or CM 10.1.3 (or any other ROM), you will still notice the issues; as your hardware has been affected. If you try to install the TRIM kernel, that could also brick your device.
I'd only install CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (stable) and stick to it. Perhaps in the future we could solve this EMMC TRIM hardware issue; as the 2012 Nexus 7 uses the same chip, and it's been patched via a software update. In the future, perhaps we could port that patch onto the Nook.
Again, for now CM 10.1.3 is your best route.
All the best.
