How do we know if we have the faulty emmc?

The patch is a kernel patch, still in testing, but the trim only works on a particular cm10.2 fw.

The details are in the trim thread.

It's still not regarded as 100% safe cos it's not been tested enough.

If the faulty emmc chip leads to a brick it simply won't boot at all, so they won't know why it happened & will honour it if under warranty.
Thanks but I was more thinking about an official policy from B & N for working tablets that are inherently faulty...can only assume they dont have such a policy and don't care......Also I was thinking of returning mine to the retailer I bought it from (bought from John Lewis in UK who have a good return policy generally) - I'm sure a bricked unbootable tablet would be easier to return but it would be nice to not have to do that!

It shouldn't be an issue at all.

There's a stock recovery image in here & a stock rom also, so you can simply reflash those & return it.

John Lewis (I'm in the UK too) will barely look at it, they really are fantastic with returns.

I have the MAG2GA chip. From what I understand, that's the bad chip...but how is it actually bad? I mean what happens that's different from devices with the other chip? Does it brick devices?

As far as I know it will brick on the SECURE ERASE commend within the TRIM function, but I think it's still unknown whether only fw rev 0x05 or both 0x05 and 0x06 are affected.
e.g. Google Nexus devices with the same chip had got kernel patch for it.

I got a MAG2GA FW rev. 0x06 module and am running the TRIM Kernel for the last 3 weeks without any problems.

Hey everyone, I'm new at posting, but I followed this forum for a long time and had experience flashing an xperia arc s, and now my nook hd+.
I thought I might share my experience with you to provide some feedback on the emmc bug.
I bought a:

°refurbished Nook HD+ 32GB from the USA
°Flashed the 10.1.3 STABLE
°eMMC Brickbug Check (from google app store): MBG4GA
°FwRev: 0x06
°All was ok, but laggy sometimes

So, knowing that my chip should be unaffected by the bug, I went ahead and tried the cm-10.2-20131123-NIGHTLY-ovation.zip, installed cwm and gapps as always, and installed the trimfix kernel ovation 2.zip from sdcard, to try and get a better responsive system.
Ran the "fstrim -v /system, data and cache" commands and got the "n bytes trimmed" messages.
Ran vdc fstrim dotrim, got "200 0 0" message.
It's been a couple hours and everything is fine, seems to be more fluid.
I will keep you guys updated just in case anything goes wrong

OK... So, I'm a real noob. I have a new (refurbished) Nook HD+ 32gb with MBG4GA rev 0x06. My questions:

1. I do not have the Trim issue with my ram (Probably). Does this mean that If I put Cyanogenmod 10.1 my performance will gradually degrade due to not having Trim? If I use a new ROM with Trim I may (not likely) brick the internal memory?

2. To make sure I understand... If I brick my ram with the rom I can create an SD rom that will run only of the micro SD card that should function like a normal ROM?

I'm sure my Nook HD+ is not one with the bug...however, I find it odd that mine is a 016G92 with a date of 5/1997. I only can find one reference on Google to this chip. Anyone know what the deal is with it?

Any more reports of bricking with MAG2A rev 6? I'm on 10.1.3 and would very much like to give 10.2 a try!
thanks
You can run 10.2 no problem. Its the trim kernel you don't want to run... Just in case. I have 10.2 on mine right now. Been like that since the 11/6 build. No issues

Just to confirm, if I have the Nook HD (Hummingbird) without the faulty MAG2GA, do I still need to flash the TRIM kernel when flashing the CM 10.2, CWM and gapps zip files?

I ask because per wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/EMMC_Bugs, it suggests that only the Nook HD+ Ovation is affected - hence I was wondering therefore whether the ROMM for the Nook HD (hummingbird) would have the TRIM kernel already enabled?

Thanks!

Jann F,

I have the same module as you. Do you have anything new to report? Are you still using TRIM? Is all OK with you Nook?

I'm running CM 10.1.3 and had lag. Leapinlar suggested in another thread to format 'data and mediadata' thru CWM. I did this and it fixed my lag however, I had to re-register with CM, and allow play store to reinstall some apps and manually reinstall other apps w/Apps Back-up and Restore. While i am happy with the results, this is not something i wish to do on a regular basis.

So, do you recommend using TRIM while staying away from the SECURE ERASE command?

Thanks,
josim

It's been a day and my MBG4GA is fine
Hi there, noticed that you have the same eMMC as me, was wondering if anything new has been found or if you have had any issues? Am still on 10.1.3 CM but am feeling the some lag now so tempted to upgrade to the latest 10.2.... Thanks
