How good is the XZ Premium for VR? (and does it support Daydream)?

Ok guys, to tell you the truth, i am waiting for the Note 8, expecting it to have a 4k Display. But it may not come with one. Therefore i am checking some options, and the only phone with a 4k Display is the Sony Xperia XZ Premium.

This phone has the best processor display etc. But Sony, (as always) manages to bring the latest technology but is never able to make it compatible with anything. (Like the PS3 which came with the best processor ever (CELL), but devs couldn't properly code for it, so many titles were not converted. Or again the PS3 which supported online browsing, but not Youtube). And even Sony just dropping support for the VIta's Playstation Now, which in fact would be the most relevant gadget to use the Playstation Now feature.

What I mean is that many times I had very bad experiences with Sony on that regard and for some reason Sony likes to troll with their technology and at the same time shoot themselves on the foot with each new product they release....

-------------------------- This Said, enough rant about Sony, and here's the questions.

The XZ Premium has a 4K Display. Awesome. It's Overkill unless you use it for VR right? Well, from all the reviews and product specification listings I could gather, it seems that Sony, again, managed to push the best processor and display into a phone but didn't make it compatible for VR. (Again, sony is trolling).

But yet, I read a few posts where some claimed that they are using the XZ Premium for VR.

So is this true guys? Does this phone support VR or Daydream?

thank you for answering.

I bought the S8 after waiting for ages for the XZ Premium specifically for VR but then I was told by a Sony engineer that the fact its a 4K display along with the LCD panel makes it super laggy and the only way forward for VR is OLED. This means VR gaming or anything interactive is out of the question but 360 degrees 4K movies might be fine again am not 100% you wont puke after seeing it tough

I'm just using VR for the first time, but I'm not having any problems with it. When I put a full hd phone in there I can see the pixels, but with 4k xzp I don't even notice them.

4k VR content isn't the easiest to find either, I haven't even touched games yet let alone a VR game that can run in 4k. (Does any1 know if they even exist, I'll look into it tomorrow)

You'll find the described problems with any other company too.

Only way to watch VR in 4K right now is to watch 4K 360 videos on Youtube. You can only use cardboard apps as well, because daydream isn't supported.

If you force a 4K resolution using wm size in adb then the cardboard app will **** up and the viewing area will be only a small area at the corner of the phone.

With that said tho, sure your phone is running in 1080p instead of 4K but you still have 2160x3840 pixels so you won't get a screendoor effect even when playing 1080p VR games.

How'd that work out?
You install tham as a server application on your pc. The android apps are clients. They communicate through wlan or USB. After Configuring you start at example one game of your Steam library. The apps simulate Steam VR and so you can play with VR. I tried it before with my Samsung S7, but the resolution was to low. I am excited to test it with this Smartphone :D

Sony Mobile's developers are unrelated to those of PlayStation. The phone just runs Android and, as far as I know, can run anything you would expect it to. I tried out a few 4K VR videos, and they look great compared to 1080p VR videos. I think they might even look as smooth as with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or OSVR thanks to having the same resolution, but as I don't own any of these, I might be wrong. As for VR gaming, I haven't really tried it, but I guess that some simple games would work fine when forced to use the 4K resolution.
There is a Reddit post describing how to get Daydream working on any phone running Nougat.

Guides for VRidge are findable here:
https://support.riftcat.com/hc/en-us/categories/201277805-Guides

I just tried Subnautica. Very impressing. Fonts are very clear to read. I tried it with Fullhd at 60 fps. Very smooth and nice. The screen of the XZ is very good. The 4k screen is really needed for a satisfying vr experience. With this app and this smartphone you can set up resolution up to 2560x1440.

If I remember right, I tried a while ago with trinusvr to play battlefield 1. It worked only in single player mode. Beside the low resolution with my Samsung S7 it was also really more fun.

Some pics and screenshots:

Many Thanks for this.
Are you German? And in the German VRForum?

180Grad 4k VR Porn, thats my Dream :D

Yes, I am german :D
I only had experience with 180° videos with the free simpsons episode from
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.spotlightstories
worked for me so far very well.

Du kannst den Jungs in dem Forum das XZ Premium vorschlagen, ich denke für VR das zur Zeit beste Handy.

Sucks that vr ridge has no 4k support yet. It seems nobody realises there's actually 4k smartphones available right now. From what I tried most apps don't wannna support the 4k screen even simple video players iin 4k with vr are really difficult to find. I simply gave up searching for one for now

you can us mx player for 4k. Maybe you have to use that 4k tinkering also but that player supports 4k. I am also testing fulldive 4k app. Seems to be good. There is also a netflix vr app but it does not support this beautiful smartphone yet.

This, and also a follow up question:

No 4K Apps. Ok, I get it. But let say that there's a 2k app that plays 3D 360 videos. (like netflix app). Can I use it to play a 4K 3D 360 Movie, and will the movie still be 4K?

Or by "no app support 4K" you mean they don't even show the 4K content?

tnx

Yes I buy the XZ Premium to 90% for VR
At Weekend spend 461 Euro on Ebay, its today arrived and on Friday came BoBo Z4 mini
They say its have 120Grad FOV, i will see.....
I had the Zeiss VR one Plus, but it was to small with the Optik - like a tunel.....and with the Z5 Premium in ADB 4k Mode was cardboard applications bad, not correct - to small/little.....

I must find a app that play VR Videos correctly in the ADB 4 k Modus with 800dpi.......

i write at weekend more ;)
