How good is the XZ Premium for VR? (and does it support Daydream)?

I bought the S8 after waiting for ages for the XZ Premium specifically for VR but then I was told by a Sony engineer that the fact its a 4K display along with the LCD panel makes it super laggy and the only way forward for VR is OLED. This means VR gaming or anything interactive is out of the question but 360 degrees 4K movies might be fine again am not 100% you wont puke after seeing it tough
if lcd is so bad for vr then why the occulus go is lcd and not oled ?

Only way to watch VR in 4K right now is to watch 4K 360 videos on Youtube. You can only use cardboard apps as well, because daydream isn't supported.

If you force a 4K resolution using wm size in adb then the cardboard app will **** up and the viewing area will be only a small area at the corner of the phone.

With that said tho, sure your phone is running in 1080p instead of 4K but you still have 2160x3840 pixels so you won't get a screendoor effect even when playing 1080p VR games.
1080p upscaled to 4k in the xz premium is better than a 1080p screen because you get some interpolation that smoothes out the edges but not as sharp as real 4k. you can see the diffference with this app that does VR without using cardboard library : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ORParga.Virtual_Monitor_Resolution - try with wm size 1080x1920 then with wm size 2160x3840 to see the difference on the smallest letters. Ok, if i understand correctly, you changed the phone's native resolution to 801 ppi with ADB command from windows right?

But does it mean that now your phone always uses 4K? How hard is it on the battery?

Can you change it back to 2K whenever you want from the settings?

Also, what Headset did you use?

As a VR Headset for the XZP the Bobo VR Z4 is the way to go. It has a wider field of view than the Gear VR.
with the 5.46 inch screen of the xz premium antvr has a wider fov than bobo vrz4 ( i have both) and antvr lenses are square so you see content in the corners that you never see with bobovr z4. the other upside of antvr is that it is foldable and can be put in coat pocket. the downside is that there is no button (you have to touch the screen from the side so you put fingerprints on your screen) the other downside of antvr is light leaks if you dont turn the lights off to do vr (you can avoid it with a scarf or tee- shirt to cover sides but you look weird in a public place :) ). wider fov like the wearailty sky that i also have (150 degree) is useless for the xz premium as the screen of xz premium is too small for such a wide fov.

Are you talking about the standard bobo vr z4 or the mini version? I'm kind of interested to grab one myself. Can you share the estimated costs I should be looking for either of these?

Heyya there!

The Standard and Mini version are exactly the same product. The only difference is that the Standard version includes headphones. I would suggest you to get the BoboVR Z5, but I didn't tried it myself, so I can't. But based on the reviews, it's the most comfortable Headset out there. For the BoboVR Z5 it doesn't matter which version you get, (daydream or not), both will do the work.

About AntVR, I didn't try it myself, it's not available in my country. If the posts above are correct, it would be a better deal than the BoboVR Z4. So I would suggest you to check AntVR and Bobo Z5 reviews. About the cost, I guess you should expect something between 25 and 35 bucks...

But still let me give you one advice. The real problem with VR headsets are the lack of comfort. Forget watching anything longer than 20 minutes with any of the Headsets mentioned in this post, except the Z5. The problem with the XZ premium is that it's a Heavy phone. Stay away from single straps which give all the weight to the nose.

As soon as it's available here, I will try to go for the Z5 asap.

I had a Note 7 and used it for VR. I can confirm that VR is 10 times better with the 4K display of the XZ premium, and no there's no lag whatsoever. The first thing you will realize when you use the XZP for VR is how much Youtubers are full of sh.t when reviewing phones.

And the LCD display is in no way a problem for VR. (Even Pimax 8K VR headset has an LCD display). I have many threads in these Forums about that.

By the way, I am the Original Poster of this Thread, and since I opened this thread I finally got the XZP. I highly recommend it. It's a better phone in each aspects to any other devices around. (Again, I used to think that the Note 7 was the best phone ever).

Thanks for starting this thread (and Joining the XZP Gang! ;)) I've had limited VR experience at shows and so far it's been pretty cool, I just can't justify shelling out so much on PSVR and wanted to test it out more on a device I already have (My Z5 Premium before it got stolen :mad:)

Was planning to get the Zeiss Headset but it went out of stock, that and the specific trays for each phone, gonna look into the Bobo VR Z4 now!

Did you find a solution for running Cardboard apps in 4k?
Most games I tried have a tiny 1080p view in the lower middle part of the screen when running the phone in 4k.
VR Player Pro works ok with Barrel Distortion Correction off. VaR's VR Player runs well.

I tried different profiles in the Cardboard app, but the ones that do make the screen bigger still don't fill the entire view and mess up the 3D effect.

I've made a Daydream Enabler Magisk module.
It systemlessly substitutes the strings necessary for the Daydream to think your device is the Pixel XL.

And the pic included is the QR code for BoboVR Z5, which I've built for myself. It forces Daydream to recognize BoboVR Z5 as a Daydream Compatible Headset, and allows for using the BT controller.

ALL apps work and launch as if it was the Google Pixel XL!

Phone is totally trash, even in vr. Big disappointed. Of course im using adb 4k mod and play only 4k 180 movie on vrtv app and screen quality is laugh. It can't be true 4K, some people said it's true 4K - open your eyes. Second Sony mobile - second huge disappointed, Never again Sony.

ADB 4k isn't true of course,if you want true 4k wait a few days and ten install next version of carbon [email protected]_extreme 4k kernel,and you will have true 4k, just look at the screen shots below and see the difference between adb 4k and real 4k.in real 4k physical size is 4k but in adb 4k physical size is 1080.

because I believe Human has same eye.

Flash daydream module in magisk,after flasing module a vendor popup will always shown when rebooting but thats not a problem.

I don't have daydream to test but after flashing module a vr setting will show on screen settings like snappatch,also full vr mode will be enabled. Try it by your self and if it doesn't work just remove the module.

I don't use magisk module.
(I use another way and I once used magisk module.)

full vr mode possible. but
problem is 'not entering daydream vr service in full vr mode.'

I've edited every .prop file I could find, but for some reason I can't get the Daydream workaround to work with Carbon. It was working with AOSP 8.1. Can someone steer me in the right direction? I liked this with the 4K kernel, but 4K is useless without VR.

What settings do you use on Riftcat?
Do you connect via USB or WiFi, and if tethered, what type of cable do you use?
What spec is your pc?

I've been getting all kinds of visual artifacting over both regardless of my settings on an i7 6700k with a GTX 1070.

Customize cardboard QR code for XZP and Gear VR

you can use this cardboard QR code i generated as a workaround for this bug ( ... ) works both on z5 premium and xz premium but it is crazy to see that sony could fix this bug that exists since the z5 premium was out 2 years ago ( the only interest of 4k on a 5.5" inch screen is for VR so if they want to sell their phones they could have fixed that VR bug, i don't get it sony ! )


Thanks for the useful info now 3 years later. Can you elaborate how you managed to create a QR code for cardboard that works 4k full size? I tried this with the cardboard code generator to get shapes right with xpreria xz 4k mode and Gear VR.

What ever I do, the VR image stays tiny on the bottom. I inputted my current PPI of 802 for the generator and all right info, even tried 200 ppi and 1600ppi, to see there is no change to the image location on VR players (still tiny at bottom).

As your QR still works but its not perfect for these lenses. A helping hand would be appreciated!

Trying my luck here now years later. Hope you're doing good in these times where VR is more needed than ever. ;)
