Uninstall any driver you have now and install the drivers from the link that rbtrucking posted.
Download the latest factory image from google.
Turn the phone off, boot into bootloader.
Run fastboot devices to verify connection, it should list your device and a serial or something.
Open the factory image zip, extract, find "flash-all.bat" and run it.

When it's done, reboot. Follow a guide here on XDA to root.

I really appreciate all the help for some reason now my computer is not showing the phone in my computer so I can't access the files on it. I think it's got something to do with what I did to root it, I changed the driver for the phone. I used the file called android_winusb
Hello... Is the phone recognized in device manager? With an exclamation mark?

I'm ashamed to admit that my device is still completely stock. Although i don't anticipate this being the case for long, the reasons i have not rooted are as follows (no particular order):

1. Security updates. Little extra layer of security has never hurt in helping me sleep better at night.

2. Lack of motivation. The phone runs so well stock that there's not the same amount of incentive that i had with previous devices.

3. Intimidated. Duel slot partition and other changes to partition mean I'm going to have to spend some additional time to research and understand the changes to recovery. I'm sure it looks to be a bigger issue than it is but still...

4. AOSP everywhere. I don't fully understand the difference between aosp and stock base. I know i can expect to lose out on customer support function built into stock but I'm unsure what else i might be missing out on. Plus it seems all the ROMs now are AOSP.

Yes it is called Android adb in device manager
Reboot in bootloader and issue fastboot command from a command prompt:

fastboot devices

What's the output? Device serial number?

If yes, follow this guide in the link previously posted by @TonikJDK

You used the old root method for 7.1

If you know how to flash a Kernel then flash the factory Kernel and then use the directions above. If you dont the easiest way is ro just flash back to stock without a data wipe. First post in thw thread below.

Good luck...

Alright I fixed the USB issue big thank you to everyone that helped me. Just wondering, if I decide to leave it stock now will I still get OTA updates if the bootloader is unlocked or do I need to re lock it?

You are fine to take updates. Leave it as is... Don't ever relock it, except if you need to RMA. If something goes wrong, at least you have more chance of fixing..!

I am still trying to get SuperSU working on my pixel. I flashed it from twrp and rebooted and its not there. Downloaded the app and it says not root detected. I've tried finding fixes on here but can't seem to find one that works. Any suggestions?:confused::confused:

Hey... SuperSU 2.78 doesn't work for the Pixel devices.

Download this SuperSU on your internal storage: https://download.chainfire.eu/1021/SuperSU/SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip?retrieve_file=1

fastboot boot TWRP again and install this one. It will bootloop a few times, it's normal. Let it reboot... You should have Root now... :good:

Good luck...

Just check the OP of each ROM in development forum. I think they should all perform the same in speed/stability. Just look at what features they offer and what you really need... :good:

I'm off to bed.

Cheers...

I root for theming and CF Lumen mostly. I flashed a custom ROM only because it has full OMS support for substratum. My preference would be a stock ROM with OMS support and CF Lumen built in so rooting wasn't necessary.
