I compared running services on my Nexus One (with CM7) with my Atrix and tried disabling services that were on the Atrix, but not on the N1. I have froze the following with no ill effects yet....

I am not running Blur, I am running Launcher Pro.

If anyone recognizes any of these that I should defrost, please let me know.

AdService 1.0
AtCommandService 1.1
blur.res 2.2.1
BrowserMessage 2.0.0
com.android.providers.applications 2.2.1
com.motorola.android.extdispservice 1.0.0
com.motorola.android.syncml.service 2.2.1
com.motorola.photowidget 2.2.1
Contacts Sync 2.2.1 (google contacts will still sync)
ContactsUnconnected 2.2.1
Data Manager Service 1.1 (internet and data still works)
Desk Home 2.2.1
DLNA 0709.69
DlnaSystemService 1.0
DMService 1.0.0
DRM Protected Content Storage 2.2.1
Entertainment Center 1.0
Files 2.2.1
Forest Wallpaper 1.0
FOTA 2.2.1 Though I'm not sure what this stands for, It could be "Firmware Over The Air"- I'm not sure if you want this disabled, but ultimately I don't think it will necessarily hurt anything
Help Center 2.2.1
Home 2.2.1
Home Screen Tips 2.2.1
LocationProxyDmPlugin 2.2.1
MediaShare 1.0.0
MediaSync 1.0.0
Mobile Desktop 1.0
News 2.2.1
Purchased Media 1.0
Quick Contact 2.2.1
Quick Tutorial 0.0.1
SDMService 1.0
Social Messaging 2.2.1
Social Messaging Service 2.2.1
Social Networking 2.2.1
Social Sharing 2.2.1
Social Status 2.2.1
Sticky Note 2.2.1
SyncML 2.2.1
Task Manager 9.0
Toggle Widgets 2.2.1
Universal Inbox 2.2.1
Voice Commands
VPN Services 2.2.1
Weather 2.2.1
Work Contacts 2.2.1
Yup, past my comment about "FOTA," I'd say you're probably in the clear if you haven't had any problems yet. Also, I'm not sure if what I think about FOTA is right or not, and ultimately if you catch wind of an update, you can just defrost it.

Can I give it a day, and then, if you're still A-okay, I'll integrate your list?

Yes, FOTA Firmware Over The Air and is one of the components needed for official OTA updates.

Also Voice Commands is used by BT headsets for handsfree control through the headset. I am not certain if most in car factory installed BT systems use it as well.

If you don't use any BT accessories with your phone then I guess you won't miss it.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether Adfree, is capable of bricking the phone or causing it to fail hash checks when going for an update? I ask this because of the changes it makes to the hostfile.

Some great changes there. I won't shut off DLNA as I like it. Nor the extdisp services. But all in all some new ones for the list. Can we say Blotware?

Cellzealot, are you pretty knowledgeable regarding what some of the more elusive elements affect? For example, I personally would be scared to freeze "com.android.providers.applications 2.2.1" and maybe a couple others that kgeissler froze.

Excluding those that are pretty obvious ones (like, say universal inbox or task manager, which obviously control the universal inbox or task manager), do you know what each element controls?

Thanks

Indeed, bro.

Part of me wants to wait a spell on kgeissler to ensure that he's still running smooth, but, all in all, agreed. More for the list. I'll get on it here momentarily.

Tell me more. (This is why I want to wait a bit before adding things)
If u freeze this, ur gmail/other accounts won't sync automatically. You would need to open the app/mails and then sync manually.

By sync I mean stuff like push messages.

I would recommend u take off "terminal emulator" too off the list, to be on the safe side. I think it is used by some people here for various adb related things.

does this have to be done with titanium backup? I use root explorer.
I create and app.disabled in the system directory then move the bloatware to that folder. i should be able to adb into it if it starts being funky. is thas a good alternative? or is freezing much better?

~$6.5 spent on TiBu is well spent money. Just get it. It'll save u from a lot of hazzles.

Thank you so much xyrovice for this wonderful thread. This has really sped up my device. My only question is, does anyone know how much ram and cpu is freed up using the list xyrovice provided?

I froze this service last night and my auto sync seems to be working just fine so far.

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I also froze this and my gmail syncs faster than on my PC. No issues at all. This is for those that use social media widget with MotoBlur.

100 MB RAM to say the least. I always had like 300-400 RAM free earlier. Now have like little over 500
Ok thanks Diablo :) that's what I was guessing it might be. I definetily noticed a difference in my quadrant scores im scoring 2765 consistantly and 38.093 on linpack

Sent from my Rooted Atrix 4G

I think I might end up taking terminal emulator off, or at least making note of its importance, Diablo. Thanks for staying on top of things.

Ultimately, I'm finding there's a thin line between freezing things that are unnecessary to some, but necessary to others (ADB functionality among these grey area elements).

I will at least make a note of it.

At this point, I'm also unsure what to do regarding the Social Messaging Service. I hear you saying that it killed your Gmail/email autosync, and I don't mean to discount your claim, but I'm hearing others saying that their autosync is working just fine. Please keep me updated as to whether or not it seems to be a problem.

Diablo009 couldn't have said it better:

Ultimately, it's up to you. I can't comment on whether or not your method is as safe as the Freezing Method, but I'd say that buying TiBU pro is a very good idea for much more than just this thread. It makes app restoration and a lot of other things an absolute breeze. Up to you, though.

Thank you for thanking me! Please also realize that I am really just compiling information. A lot of the real work/knowledge was a product of many others. I truly appreciate your gratitude, though. Thank you.

I will be looking to update the list soon, either tonight or tomorrow night (at the latest). If you have recently posted elements you believe are safe or unsafe, all I'd ask is that, if you're able (and it's not too much trouble), you simply pop in and post saying that everything is still working fine for you.

If you seem to be running in to problems, let me know so that I can pull only what seems safe.

At the same time, if you see something potentially dangerous if frozen, please post as well!! I don't want any more bad Home freezes, so to speak!

Ultimately, my goal is to compile a list of things that are indeed confirmed to be safe if frozen! Even though nobody can be held responsible for any damages, I'd still feel horrible if I designated something as safe when it was not and ended up damaging somebody's phone!

Also, thanks to all who have contributed so far! I've also seen a number of you answer questions and really being on top of things, and I really appreciate it as sometimes I'm busy with classes or the like. Thank you all.

My point exactly. I think letting a service run wouldn't really take up more than a couple MB of RAM. If a person wants, he could disable it later. How abt move this from 'safe' list to 'optional'. This way only people who have the patience would go to the optional list, while we could have only 100% known safe apps in the safe list. Well, this is of course my personal take on this.

This is a fantastic idea, and one I'd love to incorporate asap.

Like I said, the line gets blurry here and there, and having an (almost) "why even have this running?" and a separate "you might want this around, but don't need it" list is a really good idea.

I will get on this when I get a decent but of spare time.

Looks like my sync was messed up for today noon for some reason. I disabled the Social Messaging Service and rebooted phone. My sync is working. My apologies for the confusion I caused today noon. This is so strange I simply don't understand why it acted so weird today noon.
