I found that any program using my GPS would reset the phone. Now, after flashing 2.21 firmware using RSDLite, it works again.
As I could not, for the life of me, determine the cause of my problem (tried uninstalling any custom software, removing custom clock/vsel/heap settings, and un-rooting, scouring my logfiles and googling until the wee hours - found a lot of people with the same problem, but no clear fix) I felt this was my last resort, but I am glad it worked and it was not a hardware problem.

Thats the great thing about this phone for me, you always have the option to get back to stock and start again providing you can get into bootloader
lol spent about half and hour doing the uninstalls and re-installs, and the USBDeview to realize that I was actually going to the recovery instead of the bootloader

ok my phone got bricked (stuck on loading screen) so i tested this procedure but after flashing the uk stock sbf i got from above, my phone wont turn on at all. nothing shows up on the screen. but when i plug it into the computer rsd still sees it. what should i do? help
EDIT: just so it would be more clear, i have to uk version of the defy. installed a custom froyo rom on it, then when i tried to flash the black notifications bar sbf, it got stuck on the loading screen. so to fix this, i tried this with the uk sbf and now it doesnt even load to bootloader PLEASE HELP. im currently downloading the stock 2.2 china sbf above to try that out HOPE THIS WORKS GAH (

i think i know what the problem is.. i flashed the 2.21 rom when i got the phone in 2.51 in the first place. uk2.51 on the link above should fix it right? gosh

just flash 2.51 again then if you were on it before?
yeah i read a lot of times already that once you are on 2.51 you cant downgrade.. lol i shouldve payd more attention to the details before i went and dled the 2.21 uk stock sbf. thanks for the reply though. it felt good to have someone at my back when i though my money was gonna go down the drain :Z
hmm after i install i get stuck on the motoblur thing. i cant seem to exit it or browse it's other functions. im just stuck on motoblur. what am i doing wrong T_T
How do you fix the issue were you battery shows a question mark when charging?
finally finished everything but after installing a custom rom then wipe then install a different theme, the paid apps were no longer payd, so i reflashed stock uk 2.51 again.. after flashing though, most of the apps would crash and it would not let me change the usb connection, its just stuck at portal and tools.. argh

what version of rsd lite are you using. looks like it might of wiped the recovery.img?
So did it get part the way through and then stop?
