Does anyone know what version (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h) the Tencent ROG 5 is? I rushed to purchase the phone (hasn't arrived yet) and then read conflicting articles on band frequency support.
My rural area only supports 2, 12, 66 and 71 (t-mobile) bands. Says on the Asus site that some versions of the phone support these bands but I'm guessing the Chinese version doesn't.
See full list here:

Was trying to look up if a firmware update would open all bands up but haven't found specific word on that.
Thanks in advanced

mine is tencent edition (chinese), and the model is "I005DA".

hope this helps.

also i belive that bands are hardware limited, even if the phone is converted to global ROM, it would still support only its original bands.

I was thinking to buy tencent version as well, but I can`t figure out if it has all the bands for UK.

Asus has a pretty detailed specs on their site about the bands enabled in different versions:
I've ordered the European Global version from the official Asus e-store, shipped from Ireland and it is the A version: I005DA. Came with an EU charger in the box etc. I've also saw others reporting that the Tencent CN version also has the same bands. Although I'd warn you about bootloader unlocking issues with Tencent flashed to Global, because they tend to relock the bootloader after converting the phone to WW, the owner may no longer be able to unlock it the second time.
Note, that it is possible to play around with supported bands on Snapdragon using low level tools - described for OnePlus before - but those modified modem parts may get lost upon an update.
I005DA bands for you:
5G (Bands N1, N2, N3, N5, N7, N8, N12, N20, N25, N28, N38, N40, N41, N66, N71, N77, N78, N79)
FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)
TD-LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 48)
WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 19)

Both the European WW and the Tencent CN version seems to be the A version: I005DA.
Supported bands:
5G (Bands N1, N2, N3, N5, N7, N8, N12, N20, N25, N28, N38, N40, N41, N66, N71, N77, N78, N79)
FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)
TD-LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 48)
WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 19)
They seem to respect both B20 for Europe and B71 for T-mobile USA. Version A has all bands you are interested in. I think they realized, that if they travel to the EU or the US they would make themselves * by omitting common rural LTE bands...
Asus has detailed specs on bands:
Versions A, B, E, F are good for you; versions C, G, H are not. It is hard to trust a Chinese seller on being precise about the device version. Although Tencent seems to be version A, beware of the Tencent CN converted to WW and relocked: you may no longer be able to unlock the bootloader the second time.

Hi, I just received the i005DA model. Can someone point me to where ASUS mentioned that i005DA corresponds to A variant ?

Also, the seller mentioned the model's network bands are as follows:
2G bandsGSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2
3G bandsHSDPA 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 1700
4G bands1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900),18,19, 20(800),26, 28(700), TD-LTE 34(2000), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500), 48(3600), 42(3500)
5G bandsn41/77/78/79, n1, n3, n7, n8, n20 , n28, n38

From what I read in this thread, this would NOT be variant A right ?

This is incredibly helpful information! Last few questions:

What carrier are you using? AT&T or T-Mobile?
Do you have access to 5G?
Do you happen to know what bands your model has? (If you aren't sure and actually feel like going through the trouble of finding out, you can use LTE Discovery to find out. No need to do so if you don't want to.)

I'm on AT&T. My model is ASUS_I005DA. It was listed as the International version. Came with a UK charger brick. It says "ROG" on the back and doesn't say "Tencent Games." After the most recent update, I gained access to VoLTE. However, my model is only connecting to LTE via bands 2 and 4. This lines up with the bands listed by the seller. I would like to know if ASUS_I005DC has more bands that are compatible with US GSM networks. 5G would be incredible.

    I'm on T-mobile. Yes, I have 5G.
