The 4.1.1 modem/baseband won't work properly on a 4.4.2 bootloader which means wifi and carrier connections won't work properly and defeats the purpose of having the phone.

Thank you for your help, but I sure feel like kicking someone's face in at Samsung right now

How can anyone tolerate having their rights taken away like this? Don't people value freedom anymore? Who gives manufacturers the right to PREVENT USERS TO OWN WHAT THEY PURCHASED?

At the rate it's going, in a few years it will be ILLEGAL to OWN anything, we'll all be slaves

Sorry for the rant, but after having purchased a spare laptop recently that had its BIOS 'upgraded' so it won't work with inexpensive aftermaket batteries, I am FUMING. But at least it will run the version of Windows I like!!!

Good night and thanks again for your help. It was only $100 after all. Lesson learned.

I believe the bootloader, together with other parts of the ROM, are licensed to the end user rather than being "owned" as opposed to the hardware which you do own.

It's interesting about the laptop BIOS. I've never come across this type of situation.

Microsoft and Intel have limited official support to Kaby Lake and newer processors to Windows 10.

By making the bootloader unremovable, they have effectively caused IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO MY DEVICE and I should be able to demand they repair that damage, but if the device already came with this defective bootloader from the factory, the seller could argue the consumer could have simply refused buying the device in the first place. The problem is no one disclosed this defect to him/her before doing so and that falls under hidden defect warranty, which is actionable in Canada. Of course, who is going to pursue that in reality? With the cost of lawyers being what it is, no one in their right mind would do it unless they were immensely wealthy.

What bothers me most about this is they will claim it was done this way for "our own good". In fact, all totalitarians claim the exact same reason for justifying enslaving free people. The fact so few are objecting to this is proof that if you repeat a lie long enough, it becomes the truth. Such is life in a corporatocracy (otherwise known as fascism), where those who claim to represent us are in reality bought and sold by industry giants and 'citizens' have all but ceased to exist in its original definition of the term.

But enough with the political philosophical discourse - I've learned my lesson, $100 is nothing in the grand scheme of things, it will be paid for in the long run by those responsible, one way or another. Nature always finds a way. I guess it's time for me to look for a hardware solution now. If it can be flashed, it can be unflashed.

Thank you again for your insights - As much as I object to the state of affairs, I truly appreciated your help and respect your knowledge on this.

OK, sorry for being a pest but WHY won't the 4.1.1 modem work with the 4.4.2 bootloader? And how about installing the 4.4.2 modem on the 4.1.1 ROM? It would then be compatible, right? Surely there must be a way to achieve this! And how about completely zeroing out the entire memory chip, would it not then be possible to write a full ROM, bootloader and all? Or is the chip somehow preprogrammed by jtag before soldering on the mainboard?

I don't know why the 4.1.1 modem is not compatible with the 4.4.2 bootloader but I suspect it's because the way in which the modem software works is not compatible with the newer bootloader.

You could try running the stock 4.1.1 ROM on a 4.4.2 bootloader and 4.4.2 modem but I don't think the 4.1.1 dialler will work.

Flashing via jtag would still not allow the phone to accept a 4.1.1 bootloader over a 4.4.2 bootloader.
