Ok guys need a little help.

I rooted the s2 via the instructions on post one. That went perfectly fine. I had to use odin though couldn't get hiemdal to accept the tar as a valid file. Then I install clockworkmod, and had it install recovery figuring it'd update it to the latest. So now I have the recovery which is version v5.0.2.3 on the phone. The thing is, it isn't functional. Every time I try to select a menu item it hides the menu and shows the background symbol. Then if i hit the power menu again it brings the menu back. I can't even tell it to power off. I tried installing the kernel plus recovery with odin again but it still shows the one clockworkmod installed.

Any suggestions?

*edit* - Seems like i have to use the softkey for home to select a menu item. What do you guys recomend did i screw myself since i can't even make a backup or ?

You seem to have answered your own question. I too ran into the same issue, thinking power was the "select" key like it was on my Galaxy Tab. But it's not, it's the home softkey. Using that, you should be able to make a backup.

Only kind of. I still have a clockworkmod recovery that doesn't work.

For Instance:
I do a backup in clockworkmod and then the phone reboots. Then instead of proceeding with the backup i just see the clockworkmod logo. If I hit a button it then shows the menu. It never does the backup or restore or anything.

you need to do the backup from CLOCKWORKMOD, stop using ROM manager

I'm assuming you mean use clockworkmod recovery to do the backup and stop using rom manager? Um, why? I happen to like rom manager and like being able to name my backups.

Because ROM Manager causes nothing but problems on every device I've owned.

It softbricked Infuses left and right because it didn't get along with Voodoo Lagfix at all, and it does nothing but spit out signature verification failures on our device.

I used it constantly to flash cyanogenmod nightlies and never had an issue with it.

What is really bothering me is that using odin and flashing back the kernel in this thread isn't putting clockworkmod recovery back to 5.0.2.3. It's staying at the 5.0.2.6.

Obviously Entropy512's comment is valid here. You're trying to use it, and it's not working properly. So if you want to make a backup, use CWM Recovery directly.

I've never used ROM Manager, so I have no experience with it. However I too have read a bunch of posts where others have had issues with it. On the other hand, I used CWM's backup tool and it worked swimmingly.

I understand his comment and I've made a backup using both methods. I just had to pull the battery at a certain point to get it to go into the backup on reboot using rom manager. But I'm also fairly sure I know why rom manager isn't working. But to validate I have to get back to the 5.0.2.3 recovery which is why I said that was my main issue right now.

I don't understand why odin even though it is saying it passes and there aren't any errors, isn't actually getting 5.0.2.3 back onto the device.

so i flashed codeworkx's kernel and rooted with superoneclick successfully. I did it a couple of days ago with no problem, but today i'm having serious issues.
Now, after hitting the power button and trying to unlock my screen, the screen times out. This happens after about 3 seconds. The last thing i did to my phone was turn the backlight function off for my keys.
Should I reflash codeworkx's kernel or try the one Entropy put up? is there a difference? Any other suggestions? Any thoughts on why this might have happened?

**EDIT but still need help** -- I reflashed codeworkx's kernel from this post (Thanks, btw jivy26). Everything was working fine again for about a minute, and the screen started blanking out. I'm very new to this stuff. Is this what you call a soft brick? I need some help, please. I don't know what to do now.

** FINAL EDIT** i tried both kernels (still don't know if there's any difference) experienced the same problem. Had to wipe from 3e recovery. flashed the stock kernel + root provided by Entropy. now every thing is fine... I still think it had something to do with changing the Touch Key light duration. Any ideas? i don't really want to test that at the moment.

Correct Kernel?

Sorry for my noobness. I rooted my my AT&T S II and I'm getting the GT-I9100 bootload with the yellow exclamation mark. I order the USB jig to reset the counter and kill the exclamation mark. My question is, did i install the wrong kernel and that's why I'm getting the 9100 vs 777?

Thanks!

If your capacitive buttons at the bottom work, you've got a correct kernel.

All custom kernels cause logo.jpg in param.lfs to get displayed instead of logo_att.jpg along with the !. These are normal with any custom kernel.

There's a way to install a custom kernel and have the ! go away without the jig, but it's a bit convoluted - I've got a few posts on it scattered in my kernel thread.

They are working perfect along with everything else. Thanks for the heads-up.

I've been trying to get the boot screen image replaced, but haven't had any luck. I tried both versions of the SGS2_custom_param. Might just be my lack of sleep, I'll give it an other try tomorrow.

Thanks again!

I think connexion's mod only affects logo_att.jpg...

Ok, my battery life still sucks at 12-13 hours on a full charge. I noticed its all bloat service which are running causing my Android OS to use 68% of the battery. I need to uninstall some of these and rooting is it.

Can someone please tell me whats the difference between jivy26's root here vs. Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock (or Root)?
Which one is the one that leaves my phone the same as now (I have install lots of apps), but with root access?

Thanks in advance..

Thank you guys for having this great thread here. As I have stated above, my battery lasted only 12-13 Hours and have noticed crazy bLoat ware which chew up all the juice.. After following the details here from jivy26, Entropy512 and trae4nato( good screen shot on Odin selections) I was Able to get it rooted pretty easily.

You will need .net 4 for kies driver. And for super click, you will need .net 2.0 or 3.5.

With out it, I was not able to run super click. Thanks guys, I get about 30 Hrs now after uninstalling some bloat wares with titanium.

Also, after reread oF the posts on this thread, this root will LEAVE your phone aS is un changed with apps and contacts intact

Her is a repost of the list of services which you can get rid of.. The bloatware list

So did anybody figure out if the Captivate drivers work, or if I have to re-install?

And if so, is it easy enough to download Odin, SuperOneClick, and ClockWork, and then connect my phone, and root it?

i think you need to unplug usb at OneClick step 6. Then, go uncheck and recheck USB Debugging. Plug back in, and the process should continue.
