"1. Download kernel from codeworkx here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1285823"

I went to this page, but couldn't see where the kernel I need to download is.

Please advise.

Thanks.

the link was right in the first post.

Does doing this completely reset your phone (factory reset)?
rooting does not reset your phone unless you perform a factory reset or wipe data

**Changed Preferred method to PaulyHoffman's zip file flashable through CWM. Super One Click Method is still listed below**

I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY IF IT BRICKS YOUR PHONE.

What is needed:
1. Download kernel from codeworkx here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823

2. Download PaulyHoffman su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip:
http://paulyhoffman.com/public/flashable_root.html
a. Download the file to your internal sdcard thru your phone's web browser or move to internal sdcard when mounted with usb debugging checked and open drive when selected and mount to that drive and move over su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to the internal sdcard.
b. Use a file manager from the market and move the su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to the top root of the internal sdcard.

3. Odin 1.82 (Search Forums)

4. Android drivers for your phone install using Kies.
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20110512115717796/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe

Now we are going to flash the Kernel
1. Power off device.
2. Hold down both vol down+vol up and plug in usb cable
3. Hit volume up and accept warning
4. Open odin
5. Choose the kernel you just downloaded and load into PDA.
6. Click start and let it run completely and boot up.
7. Completely power down your phone.
8. Hold vol up and vol down button and then hold down power button as well until you see the boot screen then release all three buttons. It will take a few, but you will boot into Clockwork Mod, you will know your in CWM because there will be a black background with blue text.
(To navigate CWM Vol Up moves cursor up and Vol Down moves cursor down. Home button selects and back button goes to previous menu.)
9. Scroll down and select "install zip from sdcard" then select "choose zip from sdcard". Now go and select "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" then select "Yes - su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip". Now select back until your at the main menu select "reboot system now".

You are now rooted!

Alternate Root Method with Super One Click
*You need to have already flashed codeworkx kernel follow steps 1-7 from above*

Download Super One Click

1. With phone booted make sure you have usb debugging checked and plug your phone back in.
2. Open Super One Click and click root.
**It will hang up at #6 of Super One Click when it does this unplug your phone go into settings uncheck and check usb debugging again then plug back in. At this point it will continue with the root. It will send a test to your phone and you may or may not have to click allow for Superuser.**
jivy26 want to say thank you to you and too Entropy512 for all your hard work and dedication.

I notice there is one problem with your guide and please forgive the editing to your orginal post here. Suprised no one caught this mistake and asked how to get the su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip over CWM to flash the superuser.apk to become rooted.

I learned a little a long the way from having my Att GTab and having Rotohammer and few others along the way help teach me some things and how to handle flashing. I did follow per your instructions with a slight detour due to what to do with signed-superuser.apk.;) Figured it out and so far so good and rooted.

Entropy512 stated that you tested a package he created for hemidall and could flashed thru Odin, my question on this did you need that modem.zip after you tested his Kernel + SystemPackage @ Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432. Since he originally stated that it was not tested. Did your data just work afterwards for your phone, hopefully this makes since to you!

Stuck, help!

I just bought my AT&T GS2 and wanted to root it.

I didn't find the directions totally clear, so need some help.

Here's where I'm at.

I didn't know that I had to install the Keis drivers first (don't say so in the instructions), so I began the root process:

1. Power off device.
2. Hold down both vol down+vol up and plug in usb cable
3. Hit volume up and accept warning

I got a screen with the green guy and "Downloading..." and below "Do not turn off target!!"

I then began to install kies. Everything began smoothly, but I'm now stuck at "Installing device drivers. This may take a few minutes." Been that way for about an hour.

My question is what do I do now? Can I start from scratch somehow (and, if so, how)? Or do I continue the rooting process by beginning Odin? Can I pop out the battery and just reboot the phone so I can start from scratch? I just don't want to brick it.

Thanks in advance for the assist!

Yes always install kies first, then reboot computer and phone if you want a clean start, then follow jivy post or use mine above to guide thru the rest of the setup.

actually, it does say that you need the drivers from kies....in the first post, in this very thread....it says that BEFORE you even begin the steps....

pull the battery and pop it back in. power it back on normally and see if kies will finish installing the drivers. if not, cancel the kies install and try again.

Yes, I understand that I should have installed kies first, but I didn't.

How do I extricate myself from this situation? How do I reboot my phone?

Many thanks!

My mistake. Kies is now trying to reinstall the drivers. When I reboot my phone should it be plugged when I power it back on normally?

I just picked up an S2 today. I've searched everywhere in here for ODIN 1.82, but I can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, when I tried to root with 1.7, I can't boot my phone into download mode. I hold the down volume key and press the power button and let go and nothing happens. If I hold it too long, my phone just boots normally. I don't know why I'm such an idiot with this, but I've been trying for over an hour to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

I swapped my Infuse for an S2. Rooting the Infuse was a lot easier, at least for me. I came from BB originally, so I'm really, really ignorant about Android.

I found the file. It was in the original post. I didn't see it. I'm an idiot. Everything went like clockwork. Thank you for posting this great information and for being out there to help twits like me. :)

Download mode is achieved by holding Vol up and down and plugging in USB with phone completely off.

Update:

Sorry guys, seems to not be a problem. After an hour it finally told me I'm up to date. Weird that it took so long, but everything seems OK.

******************************
Original post:

Pardon my ignorance, but this is my first Kernel flash.

I performed root last week using the original SuperOneClick method in this thread. Today I wanted to make sure I wouldn't get errors with system updates, so went and selected the update check. Well, it's hung up on the "checking for software updates..." dialog. No error, no update not available message. I wonder if this has to do with the Kernel.

Should I be flashing back to the stock Kernel to fix this problem? It is my understanding that doing this will not remove root and shouldn't wipe my data.

Thanks for any help
