If you mean the kernel by codeworkx listed in step 1 of the OP, then yes, you have ClockworkMod Recovery. Just copy the UnNamed install zip onto your sd card, boot into recovery, and select install from sd card.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or I missed a step...

I'm holding vol up + down and power then it boots to "android system recovery 3e". Not asking me to accept anything. This is what it says...

Android system recovery <3e>

reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

--Copying media files...
Successfully copied media files.

# MANUAL MODE #

What can do from here?

***FIXED***

Now another issue... got CWM installed but it wont do anything. It shows me the options but goes to a screen with the CW logo an hangs there....

READ:

(To navigate CWM Vol Up moves cursor up and Vol Down moves cursor down. Home button selects and back button goes to previous menu.)

Okay. I am completely baffled and I have rooted Android phones before.

I booted in Clockwork, but when select apply file from zip, it immediately goes to a HAT with a orange error. I have never see that before.

Any ideas?

Rooting means adding superuser.apk, which is an application that manages root access, and a library of utilities to work with it. That is basically all that is done to root a phone.

Flashing means changing the actual firmware on the phone.

However, to root on the SGS II you must also flash.

I would suggest that you follow step 2a in the guide "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!!" See link in my signature. (If you don't have a windows computer, then follow step 2b.) This will flash rooted stock firmware onto your phone. Once completed, your phone will be the same as it is now, plus it will have root access. If that is all you want, just ignore all the other steps. Of course, if you read the whole guide, you will learn a little more about your phone.

Ok so I think I'm going to root tonight...I've done tons of reading and somewhat feel comfortable doing it. However I'm debating rooting AND installing unnamed rom. Should I still follow step 2a?

I haven't really decided if there are any benefits for me personally for installing unnamed ROM. Right now I love how my phone works I have no problems at all except my ear piece volume is too low(from what I read this can be fixed from root alone) and my battery life kinda sucks...so I guess can I fix the ear piece volume and improve my battery from root(obtained from method 2a?)

UnNamed rom adds a whole boatload of improvements over stock. Just read through the changelog and the rest of the OP in the development thread, and make your desicion based on that.

The best way to improve battery life is to flash a kernel that is optomized for battery life, such as Entropy512's daily driver.

In my opinion, there's nothing in the UnNamed rom that is a negative. It just improves on the stock experience. And anyway, if you decide you don't like it, you can always go back.

I think your best bet is to follow the guide step by step all the way through.

Is unnamed rom stable? That's the only thing I'm really worried about as far as flashing a custom ROM. I'm going to root here in a few moments, and I'll report back when I'm done. Also, by rooting via method 2a I will not be voiding my warranty correct?(Yes I know the thread title says flash custom binaries w/o increasing flash counter) I'm just really nervous.

I've been reading these boards for a solid month now, and I'm still nervous doing this. There is so much information on these boards, and I think that is a bad thing for us beginners, which method is best, which ROM is best, which kernel is best, etc...

anyways...here goes nothing...

Techincally, you will be voiding your warranty (if I read AT&T's fine print correctly.) But if you are concerned about actually being unable to return the phone under warranty, not to worry.

My first Captivate had the random shutdown issue. I had the phone replaced under warranty, using the One-click downloader return to stock to get the phone back to original status. There was never any problem because when the phone went back, there was no way they could tell it had been other than stock. And most people believe they don't really look anyway. In fact, some people report that they have returned their phone with a custom rom still installed and had no problems.

And this guide was written for folks like you. It's almost exactly how I felt about the Captivate when I first got it.

Well I just rooted via 2a method, and it was I expected...easy. Yes I expected it to be easy because it looks really easy to do. It's just that I was so worried about something going wrong and I cannot be without my phone.

So far I have installed TiBu & ROM Manager. I froze a few apps in TiBu, and am now trying to make a backup in ROM Manager. I installed CWM Recovery, and when I try to create a backup it reboots into what I guess is CWM Recovery, and says the following...

--Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

What's going on? Can I not create a backup of stock ROM?

UPDATE**
Guess it's because I got CWM Recovery through ROM Manager...looking up fix now...

Okay, question...I guess I wasn't supposed to flash CWM Recovery from ROM Manager...is it okay for me to follow the steps in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823 even though I've already flashed it via ROM Manager?

If you follow the steps in codeworx thread, and flash his kernel with Odin3, you will increment the flash counter and wind up with the I9100 bootscreen with the yellow triangle. If that doesn't bother you, then his method is fine.

If you want to avoid that, follow my guide all the way through, and flash either codeworx kernel, or Entropy512's kernel using Android Debug Bridge (adb) from your pc, or using Android Terminal Emulator from your phone.

I have been thinking of installing Entropy's kernel for better battery performance, but I'm not yet comfortable installing a kernel because I don't really know what a kernel is lol...I appreciate you're guidance creepy
