I would like to know also...
It's unlikely that you could find a way to tether without att noticing. Only way I could think of is ensuring you don't have a huge increases in data used from your normal average.

As for the contacts question just sync them with google and make a backup onto your sdcard as well.

Wifi tether only works for other wifi devices? I tried using it once, but I don't think it made me a "mobile hotspot" ( I turned that on too - MIUI-1.11.9)

I'm not sure if I had to be connected to a wifi to use it, or if I could use it from the phone alone.

=|

I was wondering if this method (I used it on my phone after following an improper guide on galaxys2root.com) will change anything from stock that has to do with the modem/connection anything that transfers data or would alter data speed on the phone, and would it be noticable by at&t *(I figure I could undo it via my PC even if my friends phones screen broke)

3.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)

Download the "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" package from MultiUpload or MegaUpload. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive. This is a One-Click version of Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package plus stock modem from the development forum. (Contains stock zImage, factoryfs.img with root, and modem.bin.)
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".<LI sizcache="1" sizset="76">Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8].
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success. You're Rooted.
I'm asking because his phones peculiar, he downloads any app or data in a second or less (the download bar flashes and its downloaded AND installed that fast!)

When I got my phone everything was quick, but his is crazy quick, and I wouldn't wanna do something to mess that up for him. He loves his phone stock :) it is good. My downloads took 10-15 seconds via data, his... Zipp :)

Why the difference? Same phone, same everything? I think its cause God blessed him, He prayed for the phone and God got him it for cheap + souped :) no joke.

Cant get ROOT with the official AT&T 2.3.6 Rom update. Tried both # 1&2 on first post
I was able to get root after using method 2a however I can't get the clockwork mod recovery to come up, I keep getting the standard android recovery so installing a custom rom is not an option right now. I even re-flashed back to stock 2.3.4 same issue, rom manager is telling me that clockwork mod has been successful but after rebooting it still shows me the android 2.3 recovery not clockwork mod.

Just so you know, we now got f'd by the new bootloader. The yellow triangle is back on my phone. But you can useOdin to flash this to restore the older bootloader! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316726
super new to android (as in ownership <24 hours). flashed this using odin 1.85, however clockwork mod still fails to install. it creates an update.zip that android system recovery fails on the signature part.

updated ota to 2.3.6 then one-clicked downgraded back to 2.3.4

here's my phone's info from about after BL restore & downgrade:

android version: 2.3.4
baseband version: I777UCKH7
kernel version: 2.6.35.7
build number: GINGERBREAD.UCKH7

Alright, if you are trying to install CWM head to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823

I installed AT&T's 2.3.6 and was able to put CWM recovery on my phone after the upgrade.

I can confirm that method 3 (and I presume 4, as well) works for stock ROM after the OTA update to 2.3.6

Though after rooting with method 3, I got kicked back down to 2.3.4 and UCKH7..........which makes complete sense, lol

Anyone know if methods 1 and 2 are being modified to work after the 2.3.6 OTA update?
I've havn't seen or heard anything.

So far as I know, you can root after the update by flashing a root injecting kernel. I think the zedomax rooting method works. (Warning, trips the flash counter.)

The other way to root the update, and this will work even if you have already installed the update, is to flash back to UCKH7 stock plus root, method 3 or 4 in the OP, and then check for the update, let it download and install. You will retain root on UCKK6.

Recovery?

Can't you just do it the REALLY, REALLY easy way and flash CWM through the stock recovery with su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip??

Then flash a custom ROM through CWM (Which are all rooted)

After reading the post above mine, I pulled the trigger and attempted to root using METHOD 3, and it worked, unlike this other method I did from youtube which broke my wifi. I can safely say that it worked and my battery is looking MUCH better now that I can freeze apps.

So I am on 2.3.6 and am trying to use the Heimdall method on Linux with no luck. I keep getting a "libusb error: -3". Any suggestions on what to try?

I remember this being easier on my cappy... :p

Tried to read as much as I could before asking this question, but found no answer yet.

I used method #3 on the first post.

Everything appeared to go smoothly. I got the "Passed", and it rebooted cleanly.

But when I try to install titanium backup and busy box both tell me I don't have root.

I can see CWM in recovery mode, and my about phone reads

android ver 2.3.4
baseband i777uckh7
kernel 2.6.35.7
build num
gin.uckh7

So what gives? Do i need to run superoneclick after completing the steps in method #3?

If you downloaded and flashed the one-click downloader linked in method #3 of the OP, and as you say, it flashed successfully, then you are rooted because that package includes root.

Go into the app drawer and find superuser.apk, then you know you are rooted, but if you can't find it, then you're not. Also look in the file system for the su binary, /system/bin/su.

Open Superuser.apk and see if it shows any root requests.

I didn't have the app super user after rebooting. So I thought i needed to download it from the market. So I downloaded it from the market. But, I'm pretty sure now that isn't the same thing.

---------- Post added at 11:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:47 PM ----------

Ran method 3 again. This time from another laptop. Must have gotten root because now titanium back prompted su, and then said it got root!
