Hi, was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to get my wireless working again.

I used method 3. Everything seemed to go fine. I have super user app on my phone. Phone version says Android version 2.3.4, I777UCKH7, kernel 2.6.35.7

I can connect to at&t network ok, but wireless is not working anymore :( Scans for networks (should be finding two), but never finds any and then wireless turns off.

Let me know if there is any more information I should provide. This is my first attempt at rooting a phone!

UPDATE: after doing a factory restore i was able to get wifi back and root was still there. so i have a lot of reinstalling to do, but it all seems to be working now!

I'm brand new to this rooting thing, but I can usually hold my own when it comes to stuff like this.

I'm trying to root using method 3, but my Odin3Excution v1.81 looks different than ones I've seen in videos. It's just 8 blank boxes (2 columns x 4 rows). When I do the volume button thing, then press volume up, my phone goes into the correct mode but nothing changes in the software. I tried hitting start for the hell of it (knowing it wouldn't work), and like I figured, nothing happened.

Is there something simple I'm missing here?

If you followed the steps in the correct order:

1) open "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe"
2) Put phone into download mode
3) connect phone to pc using the usb

at this point the small edit box in the upper left corner should turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8]

On some pc's, it can take some time for this to happen, maybe even as much as 30 seconds to a minute.

If evidence of the connection does not happen, then there is some problem with the connection between the phone and the pc. Try another usb port. Make sure the cable you are using is good, etc.

If step 1, 2, 3 must be followed in this order then the instruction on first page needs to be modified, adding these 3 steps instead of 2 bulletin dot.
By reading the instruction on first page, I would connect the microUSB end to the phone ANd connecting the other end of the cable into the PC BEFORE doing the volume up/down combination

Actually, the two bulletin dot instructions should be clear enough. If you use the standard method to enter download mode, as instructed in the OP, then you must follow steps 2 and 3 in order, or actually simultaneously, even though it is only one bullet point. When the phone is stock, the only two ways to enter download mode, as far as I know, are the standard method, and the jig. The order could not get reversed with the jig because you need the usb port to plug the jig, and then once in download mode, plug in the usb cable.

The actual point about being out of order is that the Odin3 one-click program must be open when the phone is connected to the computer in download mode. If the phone is connected to the computer in download mode before the Odin program is started, then Odin will not see the phone.

I can confirm that method 3 will root your device if you have 2.3.6 installed

One question how to do i install CWM after i rooted
There are several ways to install a ClockworkMod enabled kernel. Please see the guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter for several of them.

Or you could flash codeworkx or zedomax kernel using Odin or Heimdall (will increment the flash counter though.)

There is an easier way, which I got from GalaxyMaster in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404767&highlight=factory&page=2

I had the AT&T 2.3.6 update installed. Once you follow method #3 (or 4 I assume) to root the phone you are back to 2.3.4 and wifi doesn't work (at least it didn't for me). At that point if simple go into Settings>Software Update and let the phone update to 2.3.6 again, when it is finished and reboots you will be able to turn WiFi on and it will work correctly this time. No need to do factory reset and reinstall a bunch of stuff, much easier.

Much thanks to all the devs and great people on these forums.

I've tried this method to root a number of times. However, afterwords, each time, WIFI breaks.

Anytime I try to turn on WIFI, it does a Wi-Fi network scan then turns off Wi-Fi without finding anything.

My only resolution to get WIFI to work again is to revert back to stock using I777UCKJ1_designgears_Oneclick.exe

Any ideas on troubleshooting this? Thanks

Same here.
This killed my WIFI as well.

The missing step for me was a "Factory Data Reset" following the root.
Immediately after the Root alone, I too lost WiFi functionality.
WiFi setup would not find any wireless networks (of which I can normally see several). Wi-Fi would turn itself back off before anything was found and before I could manually add my network.

The USB port on my original phone shot the pooch, as they say.
When AT&T finally accepted that fact, they replaced it with a brand new phone running 2.3.4. Like an idiot, I allowed the OTA update to 2.3.6 occur on the drive home. Without knowing, this made the root a little different than my original procedure soon after launch date.

I had yet to set any account information either by exchange or by Google.
Extracting this: I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.7z
turned into this: I777UCKH7 OCD With Root.exe
Which successfully rooted the phone from OTA 2.3.6, back down to 2.3.4.
This is the point where WiFi was killed.

By immediately performing a factory reset under: Settings, Privacy, "Factory Data Reset", WiFi was functional again.
I was not allowed to do another OTA update because of the 24 hour wait period to "check again".
I tried, but it said my software was already up to date (which of course it was not anymore, I was back to 2.3.4).

Hope this helps others.

I guess it depends on whether you prefer 2.3.4 or 2.3.6. But at the point "where wifi was killed", you have a choice. You can do a factory reset and stay on 2.3.4 and wifi will return OR you can do the OTA upgrade to 2.3.6 and wifi will return that way as well.

In my case I did the factory reset to regain the wireless 1st.
That gave me back the ability to reload my Titanium backup and a few apps from Amazon and Marketplace.
OTA was 2nd just after midnight.
Apparently its not really 24hours, just either side of midnight.

Need some helps here, crawly.
My phone is still stock 2.3.4.
Case 1:
1. Phone is OFF
2. Plug a microUSB end to the SGS2. The other end is NOT plugged into the PC.
3. Press and hold Volume Up/Down at the same time for 10 seconds.

Result: Nothing happens. What's wrong? Am I doing wrong?

Case 2:
1. Phone is OFF
2. Plug a microUSB end to the SGS2. Also plug the other end of the usb cable to the powered-on PC. Immediately the Battery charging icon showed.
3. Press and hold volume Up/Down at the same time for 10 seconds.

Result: Nothing happens.

How long do I need to hold these 2 buttons?

You seem to have the sequence out or order.

1 plug usb cable into pc.
2 with the phone off, hold down vol+ and vol-
3 while holding buttons, plug micro-usb into phone

This is the recommended way. You can do it in reverse order though, ie. plug micro-usb into phone, hold buttons, plug usb into pc.

I'll give it another try.

Update:
Thanks a lot crawly,
I'm able to get into the Downloading mode.

Assuming you have the international version of the sgsII, I9100, then you are in the wrong forum area. This forum is for the AT&T Galaxy S II, I777.

AFAIK, installing custom ROM is rooted+.
Plain English: you don't need to root just simply because it already did.

What make you say you lost root?
