So is there no way to root 2.3.6 without losing data on phone? (requiring factory reset after)
I think if you root using a custom kernel, you can avoid a factory reset. It will increment the flash counter, however. This is untested by me, but some have reported success using the zedomax rooting method on stock 2.3.6.

Dumb question: How do I know if I succeeded?

Odin says I succeeded but I don't know how to check on the phone. I see superuser but when I tried to create a hotspot it wouldn't let me. I thought that would work if I was rooted.

Thanks

Problems after root

Hello,

This root procedure was brilliant and simple. Nice job!

However, I'm experiencing an odd issue ever since I rooted: My TouchWiz interface is no longer buttery smooth. It's now jerky as I swipe between screens. And, it's jerky when opening and closing apps from time to time.

This seems to only happen within TouchWiz. When I use the browser, the scrolling is still as smooth as it used to be prior to root. And I don't see any particular reduction in performance within other apps like Gmail, etc.

How the heck could a root like this affect TouchWiz transition animation???

Yes, I did do two things after I rooted: I froze Samsung Social Hub, Email (the one with the envelope with an @ sign on it), and Swype. I replaced Swype with the latest beta. But since seeing this problem with smoothness, I've since froze the updated Swype, so that there's no Swype at all installed, and I unfroze the email and Social Hub temporarily. Still, the jerkiness continues.

Any insights from the community? I'd hate to have to revert back to Day 1 stock and start over, but the jerkiness is really getting to me after getting so used to iPhone-like smoothness for the past 4 months!

Thx.
Jon

So I downgraded from .6 back to. 4. But my baseband shows as I777UCKK6 even though I am back to running 2.3.4.

Am I still able to root or am I SOL?

So I did the One click root and then I use titanium backup to get back to normal. As soon as I do titanium backup I get force closes for EVERYTHING. If I dont do the titanium backup I dont get any force closes. Anyone else had this issue or any suggestions to make it stop???

Thanks

dont restore SYSTEM ANYTHING, and if you use BATCH, only restore MISSING APPS AND DATA

Worked like a charm. Thank you!! Is that common practice with titanium backup??
absolutely. system data is very touchy. sometimes you can get lucky, but its best not to test the waters if you want to ensure stability.

when you use BATCH, restore all apps and data, you will be replacing apps that are already installed with your backed up versions, which almost always causes Force closes and conflicts.

Restoring MISSING apps and data ensures that it is only installing and restoring stuff that doesnt already exist in the system, so it shouldnt conflict with anything.

I have rooted a few phones before including galaxy 1, first time trying with the i777,

just to double check, I'm about to root with heimdall, all i want is root to get rid of at&t's bloatware, that's it, I'm happy with stock rom, so by rooting with this method i will not get the yellow triangle thing right?

No yellow triangle when installing stock plus root with heimdall, but if you ever install a custom kernel with heimdall, that will cause the yellow triangle.

So I rooted my phone via method 3 ... everything worked just fine. I knew that I would have a problem with my wifi, so I had planned on just updating my android version via the OTA update after getting done.

So I went to update the software and it tells me that I have to be on wifi to update. The trouble is the wifi isn't working! (same problem as all of the others who have posted with this problem)

I'd like to be able to do update without having to connect to wifi, so that I don't have to do a factory reset. Is there a simple answer to doing the OTA update not over wifi?

THANKS!

I rooted my phone for the very first time using method 3 and it worked like a charm. My phone had already upgraded to 2.3.6 OTA automatically.

Using method 3 downgraded it back to 2.3.4 but I don't mind that. I can update to 2.3.6 later any time I want to. I did not need to do any factory reset after using ODIN as many other people here have mentioned. Also my WiFi is working perfectly fine.

Okay, I've been looking around for the past 3 hours trying to find a way to install a new rom. I'm not having a luck with method 3.

Here's what I'm doing. I unplug my phone from the usb charger, and hold down the up and down volume buttons as well as the power button until the Android System Recovery pops up (It's not CWM). I wipe the data and cache partition like my Rom instructions says, but I do not see an "Advanced" section listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288112 nor do I see an Install Rom section listed with CWM.

Since I the FAQs says not to install Rom Manager: ****DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER! It will cause issues when you flash in cwm.****

If I were to use this method to re-root my phone, would anything bad happen? I'm running 2.3.6. I didn't see this listed in the first post, but I've noticed that the first 2 methods do not work on 2.3.6

Thanks!

Thanks bud. Ill get it as soon as I get home. Just 1 question. This is permanent root right?

Sent from my...
Not sure what you mean by that. If you mean to ask whether this root will remain if you upgrade OTA from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, then the answer is yes based on what other folks have experienced on this forum. As for me, I have decided to not upgrade OTA as 2.3.6 makes the battery life worse.

If you plan to flash ROMs, you need to make sure that the ROMs you flash already have root access (because it is possible to flash a ROM without root access as well).

UPDATE: I learnt by googling a bit about permanent vs temporary root. Yup, this is permanent root, it stays there till you remove it manually. It doesn't go away on reset.
