Thank you for your response. I updated to the official to see what it was like and to maintain warranty for as long as possible. I also just wanted the info b/c I have been reading so much on it. I agree I am not very knowledgeable. BUT, these forums get very hard to follow sometimes, and I wasn't sure b/c of having the ICS update what I would be able to do.

I am not 100% convinced to root/flash yet. I might wait for possible Jelly Bean ROMs in the future...
I went through a similar process rooting my phone recently so I will share what I did to finally get it rooted and ready to install a custom ROM. I, like you, had upgraded over kies to 4.0.3. To get back to stock and ready to root I used Creepyncrawly's guide for prepping a phone to return to the store. This i believe flashed the Gingerbread kernel and stock ROM for me but did not root the phone. From there I followed the how to guide in the general section to root my phone from stock. I don't know if that will preserve your flash counter, but these steps allowed me to return my phone to stock from the 4.0.3 kies update and then get it rooted. Hope that helps a bit.

Interesting. So here's what happened. I tried to flash I777_UCKH7_OCD_Root_No_BL.7z. I figured I would try to go back to gb and then go from there(following the guide in OP here). Process went fine and my phone booted back up, then got stuck on the setup screen(touch the green android to continue). I could push the power button to lock the screen, push it again to unlock and my widgetlocker screen (that I had set up before this process) would come up(because I didn't unmount the sd card?). I unlocked and still stuck on the setup screen. A long press on the green android initiated some error messages:

the process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly please try again. push to force close

the application Google process (com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly

And here's where I sit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[edit]Did a factory reset, got through the setup process, 2.3.4 now installed and doing an OTA update as we speak. Maybe delete this post, call me a moron, and reach through your monitors and give me a nice hard slap.
I was no better this afternoon, had the same issues. BUT I am rocking 2.3.4! Soon to be rooted.... Posting your experience will help others get rid of the Att updates.

I too have been running the stock ROM (albeit rooted and slightly modded by myself) since Day One. However, wanting to upgrade to ICS, I decided to install a ROM yesterday. After some careful research on XDA, I decided to go with this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574718

After almost 24 hours of usage, and various "testing" to make sure it was working properly, I have to say that I am very satisifed. I lost a couple thing that the stock TouchWiz ROM offered, but it more then makes up for it with ICS. No issues or crashes, and the phone is significantly more responsive. Not a huge fan of the look of the new dialer, but that's just cosmetic and can be changed. But AFAICT, everything works perfectly.

I would suggest trying to ROM above. If you have CWM, just make a nandroid backup and if you don't like it, go back to stock.

thanks. i'll check it out tonight.
what all was "lost"? nothing major?
I was using that CityID app (bloatware) that came with the stock phone. Normally I would never pay a monthly fee for something like that, but work pays for my phone and it was useful to see the city/state of the caller, so I was using it. But it's not compatible with this ROM - though I doubt more than .001% of people would care about that.

ADWNotifier also seems to have issues, but that really wasn't much of a concern either.

I also can't seem to get Face Unlock working, but I really wasn't planning on using it, just playing around with it. Unless my phone is idle for >30minutes, I just use a third party slider app to jump directly to certain applications anyway.

So all in all, a few minor inconveniences, but nothing that would make me really care about the loss. Everything else works perfect and faster. Also, if you do go with that ROM, make sure you install the better Fluxi kernel afterwards:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664688

I did run into one hiccup during installation - make sure you reboot it AGAIN right after it boots into the ROM for the first time. Otherwise your APN settings might not be showing properly. Rebooting will fix this.

Currently using the ShiShir (i think thats right) ROM, but may have to give that AOKP based ROM a try. Are contacts still built into the dialer, that is one thing i miss from stock.

Yes, there is a contact menu. And it will allow you to alphanumerically dial your contacts (ie: JAM (526) will pull a James from your contact list) right from the dialpad.

You should check out the mystic glory rom. An update should be available by the time you see this. The rom has been more than perfect for me... Smooth, fast, and the battery life is amazing!

Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA

HI, I just received a replacement phone under warranty and it has ICS 4.03. Will the rooting method on the first page of this post work? The post is dated back to 2011, so I want sure if the same method will work.

Does this also install CWM?

Thanks

No, you should not use this thread. You should flash 4.0.3 plus root from here to root. And... read the warnings carefully, since the kernel, which is the same as the one you currently have, contains a potentially dangerous bug. There are also instructions in that thread on how to replace the kernel with a known good kernel which also contains ClockworkMod Recovery.

Oh, and whatever you do, Do Not do a wipe data/factory reset either before or after flashing this. Since you are flashing the same base, you won't need to anyway. You can safely do that once you replace the kernel.
