WHOW lots of reading here.... I am hoping my phone arrives tomorrow afternoon they have this $9.99 deal at at&t so I could not resist. Already to root this puppy once here over the weekend.

So once I know what version it is running will research more yet thanks for all the great info here.

PS. Owned the S2 prior and sold it (dumb mistake) I thought the Skyrocket HD was coming out and didn't.

Nice. This is still a kick ass phone, especially for the price. Sucks they are discontinuing it for the SkyRocket considering how limited the LTE areas are atm. Best advice for rooting I can give you is read all the threads linked in creepyncrawly's sig and follow the "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!!" link. Use method 2c or 2d, depending on your OS, if the phone came with UCKK6 like mine did. BTW, I recommend shostock for GB or shostock2 for ICS if you want a samsung based rom. Both are great, imo.

Hi guys, I have been using this phone since last October and only up until recently I figured out I have the needs to root my phone. I am going abroad for a few months and I would very much like to be able to use my phone on other carriers that are available in that country.

I looked it up on how to unlock the phone and found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289395&highlight=unlocking

and it requires rooting the phone in order to be able to unlock it.

What I am trying to ask here is, does rooting my phone require me to reset/reformat the phone?

Have you tried simply asking AT&T for the unlock code? If you explain the situation they will probably just give it to you.Has worked for me with almost every phone I've had. If this is the only reason you want to root, it is definitely worth a try before you attempt rooting.

I agree with wgoldfarb about unlocking it without rooting.

If you decide to root the phone, it depends on which version you currently have. On 2.3.4 gingerbread, which is the original firmware, it is easy to root and you can do so without needing to do a wipe data/factory reset. However, if you updated to 2.3.6 Gingerbread with the OTA update, or if you installed ICS using kies, then it is a little more involved to root, and you will need to do a wipe data/factory reset.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, will definitely go to AT&T and try to ask for the unlock code. However, I may wanna try to root my phone for some other reasons too, including unlocking it from AT&T.

My S2 is now on ICS, and as creepncrawly mentioned, rooting a ICS S2 would require a factory reset, is that true?

Thanks!

Rooting Issue

Hello All!

I'm new to the Android in general due to previously having Apple products. I was rooting my AT&T Galaxy S2(ICS 4.0.3) using DoomLord's Rooting Toolkit. The command prompt shows rooting completed, but when I read the line sequences it shows "failed" or "No such file directory". Can anyone help an Android Noob without too much flaming? :)

DoomLord's toolkit will not work on that version. It only works on the original Gingerbread 2.3.4 UCKH7 firmware version. To root stock ICS, flash the ICS stock plus root tar package available in the development section using Odin or Heimdall.
