How To Guide How to Enable 5g on 6a for Indian carriers (Both Jio and Airtel)

Who is comparing with other models? I spoke with Jio engineer and according to their system my Pixel 6a should be working fine with latest beta. Unfortunately it isn’t. Only connects to n28 (700Mhz) band with -110dbm signal strength with barely any data speed. Speedtest fails but web pages open excruciating slow.

I am even unable to root the latest beta. The boot.img when patched with latest magisk and flashed using fastboot does nothing.
You have to use boot img pixel 7 for 6a also. There is a bug. You don't need to root the device if you are on latest beta2.

You have already reached out to me via telegram and compared with iphone. I am telling you not compare and look out for actual issue. Jio has issues with their BTS at some locations. So either try at different location or drop an email to jio appellate instead of calling them.

700 Mhz has BW of 10 whereas n78 has BW of 100.
700 is primarily for voice VoNR. N78 Is for data. Jio is still in beta. Only at certain areas it is working. Between Airtel has good coverage when compared.
My friend's 6A also has this issue of not connecting to n78 band. His phone connected to only 700mhz and had pathetic speeds.

My sim isnt activated yet and is not working. For Airtel on Pixel 6 it connects to 5G outside home and the maximum speed I got was 200Mbps.

The QPR 2.1 update released on 20th Jan mentioning fixes to 5G reception has also not fixed the Jio 5G problem. Phone latches to 5G with -110dBm signal strength rendering 5G practically useless with extreme packet loss and 0-64 kbps speeds. Speedtest fails.

Jio 5G has started working suddenly from today. I don't know calling Jio helped or it was update to carrier services today.

Few things:
1. Speeds are decent but not as consistent as iPhone 13 or later.
2. Pixel 6a has tendancy to revert to 4G where as iPhone 13 holds 5G signal far far better at the same place.
3. Signal strength bars always show 50% and it does not have any bearing on speedtest results. I can get 800 Mbps speeds and signal strength will still show poor reception.
4. Vo5G or VoNR works flawlessly with NR Only mode set under *#*#4636#*#*
5. I had to root and edit /data/user_de/0/com.android.phone/files/carrierconfig-com.google.android.carrier-89918740400278732189-2018.xml and add <boolean name="vonr_enabled_bool" value="true" /> before the </bundle> at the end. This gave me Vo5G option under Sim settings.

All the three work now: 5G data, Vo5G, VoWifi

Overall, I am kinda disappointed with 5G cellular reception and I hope Google boosts signal strength in future android updates because same modem Samsung Exynos 2100 is present in Samsung Galaxy S21 and those phones never had cellular connectivity issues.

Signal reception is kind of issue with Jio alone. Airtel 5g works fine. Jio signals are having issue as you said.

But Jio signal is totally fine on other 5G Phones
So the issue is very simple. It is indeed UI issue not reception issue or anything.
Pixel is getting good Jio 5g signals indeed better than Samsung and iphone. But the issue is UI , especially with Jio 5g.
Usually if Signal is one bar then signal dbm will be above - 110 with pixel(or any other device). But for Jio 5g alone calibration is bad (I mean software to show signal strength UI).
Below is how Signal strength is being shown for JIO 5G.
If signal strength is below -60dbm then full bars.
If between -60 to -65 then one bar less than full. If between -65 to -85 then 2 bars less than full.
Anything above -85 is showing as single bar. iPhone or Samsung or any other device shows full signals even if you have -85dbm or - 90dbm whereas pixel shows 1 bar if strength crosses -85dbm.
All the above ranges are incorrectly calibrated for JIO 5G.

This is the reason why speeds and VoNR performance is really good but signals are showing bad. Airtel 5g works fine though.

This must be done intentionally but Google due to Jio's beta or could be any other reason.

Also since Airtel 5g works in NSA mode, which is in conjunction with LTE , the signal shows as per LTE signal strength not actual 5g signal.

Could we enable VoNR via Shizuku?

flash the attached magisk patched beta 2 boot.img of P6a in fastboot. install latest magisk 25.2. It will show mesaage of additional step. Select the recommended option and reboot.
