It will on an incredible, but im not sure if it would work on a shift. The shift may have different mount points than the inc. You can always do a nandroid amd try it. If it dosent boot restore the backup.
is there any other place to download Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.zip? dinc DOT does-it DOT net and all of its sub sites are no longer there and the name does-it DOT net is already up for sale.

I started running into this problem just tonight. It kept insisting that my memory was low. I started pushing stuff off to the SD card, removing apps I did't use that often (My dinc serves as a palm-sized computer so I have everything I could ever need on it, including the proverbial swiss army knife app) but I kept getting the error. Tried Auto memory manager, and that didn't help either...

but i remembered seeing this thread while looking for other stuff. I came back here and downloaded the zip, dumped it in, and so far so good!

thanks muchly for the work to clear up the problem!

Rooting a 2nd Incredible

I used the instructions posted by soniclude to root my droid incredible to erase the low on space warning. They worked perfectly. I then tried to do the same with my wife's incredible but I end up getting an error while running unrevoked. It says "Failed to flash recovery image." I've tried multiple times even uninstalling and reinstalling both Clockwork and Unrevoked. Is there something I need to do to my computer/wife's phone in order to root a second phone from the same computer?

I believe the issue starts earlier with the Step 7, installing the USB drivers. My phone was found just as the instructions said in Other devices. My wifes phone doesn't show up there. At the top of Device Manager it says Android Phone and it already shows the Bootloader Interface.

HTC Incredible, Verizon, Version 2.3.4

I'm also now getting a System UIDs Inconsistent error and the only option is to click "I'm Feeling Lucky"

Help please!

I am having an issue with my phone now that I tried the ext4 mod. I was using an incompatble rom/kernel (figure this out AFTER the fact of course) and now I even lost my recovery. I can hold Power and Vol and boot to HBOOT/FASTBOOT, and I can reflash files that are on SD titled PB31IMG. I attempted to roll back to stock so I could re-root and start over as my recovery was lost, but something is still wrong with the internal partitions of my device. For example on Stock 2.2 (which doesn't always boot) I cannot see/mount SD cards in the phone. I am looking for a way to ensure that the internal partitions (including recovery) are overwritten back to the way they need to be.

I also am having an issue with ADB where i connects, I type a few characters and it disconnects. I may have to switch to Windows and try it (in Linux currently).
Any thoughts how to recover from a failed convert to EXT4? I am downloading the Wilestang83 ZIP now to see if it works better than the previous files i have tried. I attempted putting Clockwork recovery back on via the HBOOT menu, it finds the ZIP but never asks if i want to install it.

Are you s-off? What hboot version?

If your s-off, format your sdcard fat32 with a pc. Then try to flash cwm http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot. If it flashes, go to recovery wipe everything and flash a rom.

If that dosent work or your s-on, try to do an ruu http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot now that the sd was formated.

Thank you soniclude for such fine work. I came across the EXT4ALL solution a month or two ago via some other search I was conducting on some other site. In any case, I installed the mod and it has been working great since. That being said, your guide is so well written and detailed, I almost want to do it all again just to offer you tribute. I won't, but my consideration is most sincere my friend!

What if... I get the Low Memory warning because I've loaded up with maybe 700MB of app "stuff" and I want even more space to play with? That's exactly the problem I've run into. Yes, I have a ton of apps on my Dinc. No, this new problem isn't mission critical like the original Low Memory problem was. But I still find it puzzling why, with so much memory available, I can't bump it up to a GB or 2. Is there a way that you know of that can get me past the ≈750MB mark for memory. I'm camera and multimedia heavy on this phone, so I'ld like more room to play if it's possible. Any suggestions?

Once again - great, great guide. Thanks so much.

No way back when I originally rooted (two years ago) I never left S-OFF. My issue now is regaining that I believe. Most of the recoveries I try to flash do not take as it doesn't see an HTC zip. SD is Fat32 (made sure of that) I was able to flash one HTC zip recovery but it didn't cure things, the phone only boots when plugged in USB. If not plugged in it just gives the five vibrates and the led flashes green about once every three seconds.

I have tried the CWM 5.0.2.0. It sees the ZIP tests it but never askes to push VOL UP to flash, just goes back to the menu (believe due to S-ON). I also have tried 4.08.605.2 and 3.26.605.1... 3.26 complains it's too old and won't flash. I am currently running HBOOT 0.92.0000 and Android 2.3.4, my radio is recent (from when I had CM10 on the device).

I believe if I can get S-OFF somehow (unrevoked wont work) then I might be able to flash CWM recovery.

First fix the 5 vibes and sd problem with this http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=33. Then do this ruu http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip. Then head to htcdev.com/bootloader and unlock the bootloader. Then fastboot flash cwm, full wipe, and flash a rom.

Failed to flash recovery image

After unrevoked3 tries to flash the new image, I get the "Failed to flash recovery image". Any ideas why?

Every time I plug the phone into the USB cord Internet Explorer pops up and verizon's back up assistant website prompts me to sign up with them. I have tried everything to get that off. I even factory reset and opted out of Back up Assistant. You think that might me interrupting the flash?

Unrevoked 3 has become troublesome for many people. As a result it is now prefered to htcdev unlock your bootloader and fastboot flash cwm recovery, then flash misc partition and downgrade to froyo. Once on froyo flash unrevoked forever patch thru recovery to get s-off. Once s-off procede with flashing the ext4 low space mod.

If you want to stop the backup popup, uninstall htc sync from your pc, and remove cdrom.iso from /system/etc on the phone once s-off.

Well the first step on the 5 vibe page (fixing SD worked) and now I have SD card useage which makes the phone a little better. However I cannot complete the next steps due to not having root on the device. The z4 app mentioned to get temp root doesn't work it just hangs up and chews CPU (didn't realize it was even running anymore in the background) and ate the battery overnight. Never achieves root either.

Tried going to HTCDev as an alternative, but couldn't as my HBOOT is .92 and they want something higher to generate the code. Basically again I am back to needing to find a way to gain root. z4 did not work, neither did gingerbreak (I was just curious, figured it was worth a shot). ADB is unstable and disconnects after a few seconds so I can't even reliably use that. The only truely stable thing is FASTBOOT USB connection.

Any suggestions left out there? I've been digging for over a week, starting to hit rock bottom. I ended up ordering a nice used DINC off ebay for now, will make sure to take S-OFF from the beginning to avoid this issue again. If I managed to fix the old one at least I have a backup. I almost went to Verizon to get a DINC 4G or Moto Razr M, then decided to wait to see how the community swung toward one or the other first. I love the fact the DINC has so many people still working on them, and those two phones are still fresh and from what I see unrooted yet.

Now that the sd is readable, see if you can flash the latest ruu. That will upgrade your hboot to an unlockable version.

I used Unrevoked back in Feb to get root on my Dinc and it worked great. Very painless.

I tried to repeat my success on a friend's phone a week or so ago, but I guess maybe the recent Verizon OTA broke Unrevoked's exploit, because it failed. Ended up using the instructions from here, which are a more detailed version of cmlusco's advice above. From start to finish, it took a few hours....

Nope it acts like it can't connect via USB. . When the phone is booted up USB seems to reset every thirty seconds. Driver won't load properly. If I try to flash from hboot/fast boot screen of rejects the zip.

I followed the instructions to the letter (after the rooting process as i already have s-off and Root) and now my phone will not boot, just bootloader over and over and over, i can get into recovery, But like a fool. i didn't backup. and i HAVE to have the data off my phone (mainly a few contacts and some info)

What is it i did/am doing wrong? and what can i do to fix it?

No idea what your doing wrong, but try flashing a kernel, preferably the stock one http://dinc.does-it.net/Kernels/Stock_GB_2.6.35.13.zip. Or try reflashing your current rom without wiping anything. You should always back up before flashing any mod. :p Good luck.
