Help Me Im Using Miui 12.0.1 Right Now And Its A Loot Some Bugs (Nothing Update For OTA)
I Downloaded Rom Miui 12.0.3 official with .ZIP Extentions
And How To Update Manual in Recovery

Tap several times in in the number of miui version, in the image to be exactly and a messaje will appear about the activate additional update features, then try the three dots again and you will see chose the update package.

This way will work with OTA package only. Most probably he got the recovery package, so it will not work. He has to search for an OTA package on MIUI 12 telegram or so, to put it in internal storage in a folder called "donwloaded_rom" (if it not exist he can creat it) and then he can follow your advice.
