A friend is offering to sell me his Verizon S9, but I've always heard that Verizon pumps up their phones with huge amounts of bloatware. I'd be using the device on T-Mobile, anyway. I think this thread would give me what I need, right? His version is a 960U and I'm looking to get the U1, which is the "factory unlocked" vs the "carrier branded unlocked" that all the U versions are?

Right now I have an S8 that I got from Amazon and it just reads G950U1, so I'm guessing that U1 on the S9 is what I want too?

This doesn't trip knox or root the phone, because these are signed firmwares? I used to do this a lot more in the S3 and Note 3 days but I've been out of the game for awhile. Haven't needed to load up Kies (heh, does anyone use Kies anymore or has it been completely replaced by Odin?) in a long time!

This is what you need(it won't trip Knox or root), but make sure the phone is actually unlocked as the U1 software won't unlock it. Also after you flash the U1 firmware you can then Flash the T-mobile U firmware.

I have a T-Mobile branded S9 SM-G960U. I tried this and during the flash, it stops and gives me an error in Odin and phone. My current version is G960USQU2ARC6

Error on Odin: Set Partition then Fail!(Auth)
Error on phone is SW REV CHECK FAIL fused 2 binary 1

Hello, if I were to buy a ATT 965U device, would I be able to flash to 965U1 and use with CDMA bands on Verizon?
I dont think Verizon uses CDMA as much anymore.

Flash ATT version with U1, and you can use this on Verizon services. less video calling and other band specific services.

on my set up, U1 firmware, using both Tmobile and Verizon, I have LTE / GSM chosen on mobile networks and both works.
When I change it to CDMA i actually dont pull up signal via Verizon

Thank you for your reply, How would I know if it's a non charging or charging? This is the cable that came with the phone.
Make sure the port your using doesnt have "SS" or "thunder logo"

I had that issue on my desktop, so I used my old laptop that had USB 2.0 and it flashed fine.

When you have the phone connected while its on, can you adb devices and see if its visible?

It will reboot the phone in download mode just fine using adb, I notice that I am unable to use another SIM in the phone, it will only work with my T-mobile SIM, maybe being SIM locked is the issue? Not sure because I have seen others flash fine.

but you said your model is a 960u?

the phone can be locked, but Ive never heard of the actual sim card being locked to the carrier.

Last i checked all s9 from the us region are unlocked. mine is a verizon version.

are you using the newest odin?

if the moderators allows this link, try this:

https://support.t-mobile.com/thread/144772

its post number 21, its step by step with links. (some links refer back here)

But i assisted a user thats almost on the same boat as you and the user replied that it works.
His issue was the version of his ODIN and he was using usb 3.0 ports

3. Open command prompt on your PC and type adb reboot bootloader
Is this step equivalent of using key combination to put phone into the download mode? If yes, can I just use the Volume Down + Bixby + Power instead of adb? I don't have adb on this PC. If not, what else does this do? Thank you.

Okay so I have a brand new S9 Plus (SM-G965U) that I have submitted an unlock request to AT&T for. Once that goes through I would like to make this a T-Mobile phone. Is that as simple as just switching over the T-Mobile sim from my old phone? I want to make sure I have all T-Mobile features such as Wi-Fi calling etc and want all of the AT&T bloat gone including the AT&T logo when booting up. Does the phone need to be flashed and if so can someone explain in layman's terms what I have to do/which files I need? Thank you!

Unfortunately it's not that simple. You will need to flash to a U1 Firmware then to the T-mobile U firmware. See this post (thanks @jrockz3000). The post is written for the S9 not the Plus so you will need to get the S9+ firmware from this thread (thanks @iBowToAndroid).

Just finished, booted right away and didn't loose any of my settings. No wifi calling as expected and no video calling option in dialer. Two features I didn't use anyway. Haven't seen anything else being different except no T-Mobile bloat. I guess that's a win. I can always go back to TMobile rom if necessary. Thanks guys.

Edit:

Actually, wifi calling seems to be working. Haven't tried yet.

Was your phone sim locked by T-mobile? I'm planning on getting one from t-mobile, which means carrier locked. Do I need to get sim unlocked first? Will flashing this U firmware unlock the carrier lock?

It turns out that after I flashed to the TMO rom, it the TMO Rom locked the boot loader. Now I'm trying to get it back somehow to a U1 or at least the Samsung "U" version if there is one.

basically, when I first flashed to the "U1" I did test wifi calling and it worked fine. The only things that I am aware of currently that would be mssing from the "TMO" rom is you would not have TMO's Video calling or their Visual VM.

I haven't worked much with Samsungs before (mostly Nexii and OnePluses) and I feel as though I know the answer to this question already, but I won't need to flash back to the ATT firmware in order to sim unlock the device, right? I got it from ATT, flashed the U1 firmware, and using it until unlock code from ATT comes in.

Does the TMO rom have the Visual VM built into the stock dialer? Or do you still have to use the TMO Visual VM App?
