Question How to GSI on s23 ultra

overlays in theory fix stuff like automatic brightness and a few other things

thanks a lot! I tried it out and unfortunately it resulted into lineage getting stuck at the bootanimation.had the funny idea to do it while being outside, thinking "eh what's the worst that can happen with a magisk module" now I'll be able to fully appreciate the animation beauty thanks to samsung blocking access to recovery if it's not connected to a PC till I'm home :)

edit: thankfully, magisk automatically disabled the module after a few reboots. I tried to access it from adb to get logs with a friend's laptop, but it couldn't even reach that stage, adb couldn't find the device. Sorry about that, I'm sure with this little information there isn't much you could do.
But auto brightness works fine in LOS.

it doesn't for me, brightness is set to max randomly, even without direct sunlight. I remember a clearly different behaviour under oneUI
and anyways, that's not the only thing that overlays fix but I can't remember the others
No, I understand what would an "overlay fix" normally does, but the person didn't really specify what exactly is he attempting to "fix" with HIS overlay.

I actually managed to boot various GSIs and found the main culprit of the bootloops that appear after you see the welcome screen.

I assume it's SENSORS related. Put your phone on a flat surface (table or so) and let it boot again. You can actually use the phone like that and it won't enter the bootloop. The moment you pickup your phone in your hand/s, it soft reboots again. lol

Anyways, probably reacts to one of the orientation sensors which either crashes or whatever causes a soft reboot.

Yes i had that too. Currently only Andy Yan's and Phh AOSP builds work.

Hi, I tested Flyme10/Myui5.0/Pixel14/

They all have the same bug: Volte × fingerprint × Telephoto 100X ×

I hope someone can build a custom ROM for this

would you and @JohnTheFarm3r mind sharing the install procedure you followed? did you just flash the system img over fastboot? I slammed the GSIs into dsu praying yet none worked(even if the phone was laying on a flat surface), rebooting after the splash screen with the warning. I tried exactly the same ones as mr.Yasuo did, which should be arguably the easiest to get to at least boot. thanks!

and yeah, I think no one will bother making an actual custom ROM for our device.

The DSU sideloader is a bit different, it's not the same as replacing the system.img via fastboot. It creates a dual boot.

Anyways, between trying EACH GSI you need to wipe your data (Format data inside TWRP).

And you flash the GSI.img via fastboot through twrp.

fastboot flash system gsi.img (you can rename gsi to anything you want).

Building a custom ROM for this would require sources and trees to be first built including a kernel (that is a messy work with 8gen1 and 8gen2). We don't have those, and that might not happen anytime soon. And even if someone builds those, either that same or another person would then need to build a ROM based on those which would be probably buggy initially too.

And since we're talking about Samsung (KNOX issue) many devs are not willing to kill their warranty when the KNOX is tripped so they're not unlocking the bootloader and obviously not developing on it.

I am using DSU sideloader to install system. zip (system. img), which will preserve my data. If it fails to boot, you should be aware that GSI.img may require (ext4) format, or you can install RW ROM first

Sure, here.

Too late, I screwd it up. :(

Was using dr ketan rom, booted into twp, entered fastboot mode and flashed gsi with "Fastboot flash system gsi name.img" and press Reboot. WIthout formatting data.

Now the phone is constanly rebooting and cant enter TWRP neither Download mode. Its really stuck on a endless bootloop.

Is there something I can do?

Wow that is awesome dude!! How is it going? Bugs you have found? Fingerprint?

How is it? Smooth? Any problem? Battery wise? Everything :)))

Hi guys, sorry for the delay. The stock 13 GSI was pretty good albeit not perfect. Smoothness was very nice after force enabling 120hz through adb (battery life is notably worse, as you would expect).

Feels just about as smooth as stock, which is pretty good IMO.

This was the stock google build, so no fingerprint or face unlock. I would imagine custom GSIs would fix some of this.

However I eventually returned to stock since I post videos on social media apps a lot, and the generic camera API on the GSI made it pretty bad to look at.

Fun to try out, just wasn't ready for my needs yet.

I also did try to flash the original recovery for PEX like the user above me mentioned, still no dice. I have been out of the Android scene for a few years prior to this so it is probably something I am doing.

    Hope this helps, thanks!

Hi I am kind of noobish to GSIs but I got the google built android 13 GSI working on my s23 last night, couldn't get pixel experience to boot. CrDroid would boot but I was getting a lot of random trips to the bootscreen during set-up.

Haven't tried android 14 yet, but the procedure was pretty simple for android 13 GSI. I had already unlocked bootloader/rooted my s23 before attempting this, which included flashing vbmeta_disabled

Downloaded official google android 13 GSI

    Install TWRP with Odin
Reboot to recovery and wiped data
Reboot then into fastboot inside of TWRP
flashing gsi using fastboot: fastboot flash system system image
restarted went through set-up and downloaded Magisk and Pixelfy magisk mod and I am pretty content

If anyone knows how to get another GSI like Pixel Experience or CrDroid to work reliably I am super interested

thanks! managed to install it and it would be almost perfect if it werent for the.. random graphics lag :p
do you have this bug as well? btw, I flashed the bgN package. it's still usable as a daily driver, I really didn't expect it to work this well, but it's a bit annoying not gonna lie. and the fp scanner lock option is completely absent, cant even try enrolling it :')

I'll report it to github alongside the fp scanner later on, might get both issues fixed
There's no bgN in "light" version. You might have flashed the TD based one? The correct one is "gN".

Light is much smoother than TD. After Flashing it go to Display and force FPS to 1440p@120hz. I haven't had any lags after forcing 120hz tbh.

Yes, FP doesn't show. AOD is available but hidden.

Battery life is better and phone runs noticeably cooler. Uses much less RAM also :)
and now I am 100% convinced. it's time for some modding on a 1k device

I'll look into making an overlay, doesn't seem that hard, I'll let you know how it goes
