The instructions for stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 are a little confusing.
I need some clarification:
Download MM bootloader unlock tool
Install and open the Asus Bootloader Unlock Tool and unlock the bootloader.
Do we need both MM bootloader unlock AND Asus Bootloader Unlock Tool?

It is unclear when we actually use the MM bootloader unlock tool.

So I assume you can ignore the MM bootloader?

----
This is my first time rooting ASUS phone. With Samsung phones in the past, it was 2 or 3 steps and then the phone was rooted, without the need for changing the recovery if I remember correctly. And just one or two files to upload to the the phone's internal storage.

With Asus, there are a lot of things that need to be downloaded here and the instructions are kind of in different places, which complicates things.

Its as simple as abc, read the instruction in the original post , go straight to the buttom and unlock bootloader with the asus tool(using beta kernel is outdated), go back to the TWRP instruction and flash it after unlocking bootloader, after go ahead and flash root under rooting instruction, all the files in the instruction is applicable to everything you're doing, and that's it, no hassle anywhere! But note, the instruction applies ONLY to the 8916 device 2Gb ram .Works on any marshmallow firmware for the device, but the Asus unlock tool works starting from .46 firmware.

Success! I did document what I did and provided links for reference so it is all in one place.

I used the Asus 8916_SIGNED_Android_M_UnlockTool_2016_0715.apk [referring page] to unlock bootloader (there are a couple of different versions out there).

I had to manually install Asus windows 7 driver [referring link zenfone 2 laser] to get ADB/Fastboot and other CSC tools to detect the device (previously I had no problems with USB detection in fully loaded android 6.0.1; only in CSC mode windows wasn't fully detecting device). It shows in Windows 7 Device Manager in Other Devices > Android.

To update device driver:

right-click device >> Update Device Driver >> Update Manually >> Show All Devices >> Have Disk >> Browse >> ...\ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows\Windows_XP_VISTA_7_8_8.1\Android\android_winusb.inf
View attachment 4147855

on the final screen I used ASUS Android ADB Interface. Click ok if any additional warnings appear.

After that the device shows in device manager and remaining process was easier. I was able to use command prompt from the ADB/Fastboot folder and the command
Code:
fastboot devices
shows the serial # of the device and the word 'fastboot'.

Follow the steps in the video here to enter CSC mode (power button + Volume UP button) and flash custom recovery [Z010_3.0.0.t1_without_su.img].
Code:
fastboot flash recovery Z010_3.0.0.t1_without_su.img
Then immediately afterwards disconnect USB and reboot into recovery (power button + Volume DOWN button). Should boot into the TWRP custom recovery.

Flash [install] PRO-SuperSU-v2.67.zip

The files/tools used in the video were consolidated here: Root Zenfone Max 6.0.1.zip [use list view]
| mirror list on blog [be careful of popup ads]

----
q: my device boots and operates noticeably bit slower after rooting. Any recommendations as to what to do to speed up device?

First unlock bootloader, the unlock tool is in the original post at the end, but for the unlock tool to work you need to have an android 6 firmware starting from 13.8.26.46 and above, i can see you're on 13.8.26.36, so its not going to work.

im always stuck on adb window <waiting for device> nothing happens
usb debugging is already on got to many drivers that I installed including the asus drivers, qualcomm drivers, adb drivers etc.
already unlock my bootloader by the official asus app it just restarted my phone w/o any data being erased (is it normal?)
im using windows 10 laptop
my phone is zenfone max z010d 32GB SD410 2gb RAM running on MM lastest firmware 6.0.1 build WW_13.8.26.76_20161230
i tried to detect my device using the adb while the phone is connected (normal turned on)by the command "adb devices"
it detects my phone and show its code numbers/letters
then I reboot it to fastboot by entering command "adb reboot bootloader" then it reboots into CSC mode
then I tried detecting it by command "fastboot devices" nothing shows
I also tried directly flashing it. "fastboot flash recovery <name of twrp.img>"
it just shows "<waiting for device>" then nothing happens
PLEASE HELP thank you in advance

Boot into fastboot mode (csc) , connect to pc, open device manager, check for any yellow triangle,(might show instead of Android fastboot driver) ,right click on it- update drivers- let me choose from installed drivers on these computer (something like that) - browse and choose drivers you already installed. If this doesn't work, download and install these drivers https://yadi.sk/d/AvRY3osQxSVQs
