Very good information but if you are able to turn on your phone , it is not bricked at all. Its basically in a formatted state and needs to have a booting rom. Brick by definition is a total brick. NO LIFE, NO ENERGY. No lights. That is the thread I want to find. I bricked one and have not been able to recover. The Jig does not works on fascinate.
I flashed a AT&T Captivate stock rom to my fascinate by mistake. The only thing it would do is boot loop that stupid AT&T logo. Nothing else. No button download mode. Nothing. The jig put it right into download mode. Google "fascinate jig -captivate".
It is important to exclude captivate results in the search because that jig does not work for us.
I was able to use the ODIN method in this thread to bring my phone back to life.
Let me tell you though. I tried ODINv1.3 about 200 (yes two hundred) times before it worked. I was at the point where I would just do it while I was doing other things just to be doing it. Then last night. It just worked. I'm back to stock and the phone works perfectly. I tried all the different usb ports, different cables, different combinations of putting it into download mode, uninstalling and reinstalling Samsung drivers. If you brick your phone, all bets are off (especially if you flash another phone's software to it) and you just have to have patience.
That is what I learned from this.
Thanks to the OP for the info. My SGS is back from the grave.
