Yeah, this is awesome. I can try a ROM without even having to do a backup first!

This is better than my GS4. I'm on Baja right now. I'll have to check out Eclipse since I'm coming from CyanogenMod 11.

So far, some of these pen features are awesome. I hadn't even really used the Note 3 until after I rooted and ROM'd.
If you don't keep a backup of the stock rom, make sure you have access to a MJE tar file and Odin in case something happens :D

It doesn't say it won't work, but it keeps 100's of bug posts due to old firmware from filling threads. Even you admit 'no major problems' which means you DO have issues.

Most ROM OPs suggest updating to MJE before flashing their MJE Rom as well...

To have your actual memory available for use, flash rom on Stock slot, delete any roms on slots 1-4.

Isn't flashing over stock rom something that will flip knox? Or does that not matter now that safestrap is installed?

Additionally, I don't get the point of the limitation. I left it at the default sizes, and apparently with Cleanrom I could decrease the rom size a bit because of it's size. I also left data at default, and had about 1.9GB of space left. Now I'm down to about 250-200MB and android is yelling at me there isn't enough space. Which is kind of frustrating that I'm so limited in space, especially when I haven't even installed 1/3 of the apps I usually like to have available. (and the fact it doesn't matter about the space because I can copy gigs of app data to the internal storage and the device doesn't complain.

I realize it's like this so that you can have like five roms and switch between them, but I have zero interest in that and find that more intriguing than useful. To make an analogy, there's really only a point in having 1 main and 1 backup, as most people would with a linux/windows or osx/windows install. You use one, and if you can't do something in particular, then you fall back to the other.

As for issues, i don't have any issues, other than the limited data space partitioning.

Flashing cust rom in stock slot does not trip knox (I've flashed stock slot literally dozens of times, know still 0x0)

When using Safestrap (SS) if you boot to any slot other than stock slot, you will get an incorrect reading on available memory.

You can have multiple roms flashed on slots 1-4, and if you're booting from stock slot, you'll get accurate reading on avail memory.

Stock slot = accurate memory
Slots 1-4 incorrect memory (use file checker to get accurate memory avail)

When using multiple slots you CAN bump up the slot partitions to 4 gb max, but that will reduce the available memory for the remaining slots. The space limitation is to allow enough memory to be left for all slots to be used at same time.

This is all explained in detail in the OP... Hope that helped :D

I guess I just wish there was an option to use as much as possible, disregarding leaving enough space for other roms.

I'm not at all interested in running five roms on my phone when I'm only ever going to use 1. It's bad enough reinstalling stuff back to your new OS but five times is a bit too much. I just want to keep stock there in case something ****s up with the custom rom, I can be sort of secured in that I can just drop to the stock rom.

If you ONLY run a rom in the stock slot, you get access to ALL your device memory. Sorry if I didn't make that clear before.

You don't need to keep a stock rom in the stock slot. Keep a stock rom backup on sdcard and if trouble comes, flash it to stock slot. OR if BAD trouble comes, it's really easy to flash MJE in Odin and get stock os, firmware that way to.

CM11 requires separate kernel which can't be flashed on retail version IIRC.

Thanks that's what I thought :/

Do you think Samsung would release an unlock tool? Or has there been any progress to unlock the bootloader? ( that would allow custom roms to the full extent, correct?)

At the moment, most view the chance of getting an unlocked GN3, slim to none. But there is a lot of talent in xda, so who knows...

EFS/IMEI Backup

Hey,

I hit thanks cause I used this thread (and a bunch others as well) to help me root my phone.

But one thing to note: if you want to install a custom ROM later on or even right after you root, I would suggest backing up your EFS/IMEI.

Your IMEI (you can google for more details) is like a product # specific to your phone. If your phone is lost or stolen, the IMEI is marked as invalid and you'll lose your phone network.

When you root, update your firmware, install custom ROMs, etc, your IMEI can invalidate and become 00 so... yeah, backup should def be noted.

There is a thread on an EFS backup app. I'm still trying it out myself...

this is the only usb 3.0 cable i have. i've tried both USB ports on my computer. i don't have a antivirus, i've ran as administrator. tried rebooting multiple times, switching back between OS X and windows, have messed with the device display but will try now.

I just got this yesterday so it's on MJE

Dev options: Usb debugging checked

Security: unknown sources checked, verify apps unchecked?

Sorry if you've done these already, just making sure.

Try vroot. Users that have had issues with kingo have used vroot successfully. If your pc sees your device, and you've git everything else covered, msybe kingo site is down?

Well, I didnt have the same exact issues. For me, kingo could recognize my device but it wouldnt root no matter what (despite numerous reinstallations of kingo, samsung drivers, etc and i also bought a usb to micro usb cable for the kingo method as people have said that works better)

I ended up trying vroot and it worked for me on my first try.

I'll try and find the thread/site I used for Vroot instructions but I originally googled it myself and found it.

Note: try at your own risk

It's a Chinese program so after you root be sure to flash SuperSU to replace Vroot. Also, like Kingo you have to run the program on your PC so be sure to uninstall after you're done.

Then be sure to install safestrap and backup your phone

Then be sure to backup your efs data

Then depending on whatever else you want to do to your phone... do further research

Good luck
