***How To ROOT 4.3 & NC4 OTA, Install Recovery & Roms - Verizon RETAIL Note 3***

..What the... Now mine does too? Maybe with Stock firmware it says build version and on a custom ROM it shows Base Version. There's a cell phone kiosk inside my store with a Note 3 on display. I'll see what it says and take a picture if it's different. I could be crazy, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.
The Cust Rom vs Stock Rom explanation is probably accurate as I didn't create this thread until long after I flashed a cust rom.

If the stock 'about phone' shows diff info PLEASE attach a screen so I can update the OP.

Thx :D

Build/base, potato/pototto. Appreciate everything you've done.

Normally I would agree with that, but when you are talking about rooting and installing ROMs and every tutorial says to follow it exactly to avoid bricking your device, I was looking for exactly what he posted. :)

And I just came back from the store, I was correct. Someone already posted a screen shot though. :highfive:

I was making light of it. Not a brickable move on developer option, but you have a point when it comes to flashing and following instructs.

Just rooted and got safestrap installed using this guide, thanks for that. However kingo would not work as it would not even detect my phone and yes drivers were installed. However just downloaded vroot from their site and it worked first time perfectly. Flashed chainfire's supersu and uninstalled whatever crap it left. Easy peasy. Now to install baja.

Thanks for the guide.

Thanks for this! Just rooted after reading through. All seems to have gone well and I'm now about to install SS.

2 questions:
During the root, a dialog from Google (from a specific guy...) popped up on the N3 saying that MKTcamera shouldn't be installed as it would bypass security. I clicked "install anyway", as I assumed it was part of the rooting process. Correct?

Also, after the install, next to the SU icon in the app drawer is the icon pictured below. The app is completely chinese. Leave installed?

Thanks!

If you rooted using knigo install chainfires SuperSU over the kingo version and all is good. If you used vroot (which I suspect you did), I'm not sure as I've not used it. I'm presuming you'd follow the same process as Kingo.

I used the Kingo 1.15xxxx found in post#347 (yank). SU was installed as part of the root process, after which I got the latest version from Google Play (1.94). It seemed to upgrade fine, and 1.94 is the version showing in SU. I also just finished installing SS, which seemed pretty straightforward too.

I'm assuming all is well with SU (?), but what about the chinese app left behind (as per screenshot)? And nothing to worry about with the MKTcamera app warning?

Again, thanks.

That's the one I used. Didn't get any Chinese version installed. And you should be on 1.94. Flash ss 3.71. Don't know about the camera warning either. You didn't try vroot first?

No. This is my first root on this phone. The icons in the screenshot are as found after the install. Millerma1 in post #344 states a similar icon (he describes a 'backwards' p). He uninstalled his (I assume without incident, but he hasn't posted further info). I ran a nandroid, so I guess I could uninstall it and see.

I installed the latest stable version of SS - v3.65

Seen a couple people post issues with 3.71. I haven't had any. You should be fine uninstalling. Especially with back up. Have you googled the camera issue? I've seen no posts on it.

Actually, I just froze it via Titanium. That should allow time to see if any harm done or functionality missing.

As far as the camera issue, no I haven't googled it. It struck me as a bit odd. I haven't found an app by that name in the app list or titanium app list. At any rate, I doubt I have a virus or malware, as I'm careful with my downloads and installs, and I can't imagine that the kingo version posted by yank is a problem, given that there were no other complaints. I guess it's a wait and see kind of situation.

Again, thanks the thread and the help. It was indeed an easy root. I've already frozen all the verizon crap that couldn't be disabled with stock/non-root. After I've installed all of my root apps, I'll be a happy camper. I've had this phone for over a month, but just haven't had time to do my homework to root it. This thread made it pretty much a no-brainer. :)

And after googling, here's an xda thread on it. Looks iffy, but I haven't finished the thread yet:

I ended up just uninstalling it from my phone with no issue. As far as the mtk camera app...... I was really skeptical, I read several threads. I found a post from a great developer, Beans, saying it was part of the code. With the advice from biker, I just did it. I've had no issue. This thread has been a life saver. We take a risk every time we root. This one is no different.

There's a thread here on xda that discusses it as well. Like those in the thread, I could find no trace of Mtk Camera. And, as mentioned earlier, I froze the "P" app with Titanium and have noticed no issues. I've kind of been waiting to make too many changes because KitKat was supposed be released by vrz last month and I didn't want to do it all again. But from what I've been hearing about further limits imposed by the vrz version, I may take a pass on kitkat anyway.

Indeed, the help here is greatly appreciated.

Vroot is a little more upfront about the apps like mtk camera. It appears the 'app' is part of the back door into the exploit. Of course, had Kingo just said so and not led us all to believe it was malware, paranoid geeks like me wouldn't be ranting about it. :)

I had to re-root my phone yesterday after getting it back from Samsung repair. Even with the old Kingo it coudn't root. I gave up after several unsuccessful attempts and used Vroot. I accepted the mtk camera msg but no such app is installed after root. It may be something used in the rooting process that is deleted after rooting. Regardless, I am happily rooted and safestrapped. Thanks again to those who made this all possible despite Verizon's silly locked bootloaders.
