It has always installed SuperSU. The purpose of flashing Chainfire's zip file is to overwrite the one that Kingo installs. Just in case there was something nefarious (sp?) going on with the one it installed.

Ah gotcha. Well I am sticking with the potentially dangerous SuperSU.

Is it safe to assume this doesn't interfere with Knox? If this was my personal phone I wouldn't care but it's my work phone so I need to make sure warranty stays intact.

My knox was 0x0 before, after and well into a dozen reflashes... No worries...

Not to sound like a nag; but as easy as it is to flash reputable superSU, why tske any risk leaving the unknown Kingo version hanging around? Just something to think about ;)

As a test, the last time I used Kingo, I didn't install SS, but I did reinstall SuperSU using the option in settings to reinstall from Google Play. I believe that this method is as effective as flashing the zip with no need to install Safestrap recovery if you are only after root privileges.

I do agree that until the Kingo app is properly vetted, that it makes sense to be safe.

Is it possible to get OTA updates once it's rooted and safe strap is installed? I'm planning to leave it stock rooted.
Unless you disable the SDM.apk the phone will still download OTA updates. Whether or not it will install would have a lot to do with what modifications you make to the phone besides rooting. If root is all you do, it is likely (not definite) the update would install and most probably take your root access in the process.

If you make significant modifications to the system (ie. freeze or remove apps) the OTA will fail.

That is good to know. I thought it was mandatory to install SS. I just wanted to root solely to enable the Service Menu and enable AWS Band 4. Could I simply just install SuperSU from the play store instead of flashing the zip?

This should be clarified in the OP. :good:

Az Thanks for this tutorial I followed it with success. One question though, do I need to back up my stock image or is that already done? Thanks!

Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
Backing up stock rom is not necessary but recommended. I kept the stock rom on my SD card, but only keep my current rom in the stock slot with all other rom slots uncreated/empty/not activated.

This way I have access to ALL my internal and sdcard memory rather thsn splitting it up between multiple rom slots. If you like switching between multiple roms, SafeStrap allows the ability to do just that.

I currently did all the steps above and running beans rom.

When I am in my stock rom it shows that I have 20gb of storage left (Internally)

When I load up the beans rom, It claims i have 568mb left.

Is there a way that I can keep my backup on my storage card and run Beans as my default? I am sure this was talked about, but i am only used to casual root. Beans is my favorite rom.

Did you perfom these steps?

How to change your primary Stock ROM:

I did this and I show 20gb internal and 19gb sdcard...

I went back and read all the steps again. I performed back ups of my stock rom my to sd, confirmed it worked in an open room slot.

Made 3 copies to my laptop, drop bock and my so card.

Made a copy of my beans rom

Then wiped the device in ss. After restored my beans rom.

Running only beans now

Love this site. Was tempted to get the developer's edition but this works for me.

Does the Kingo method wipe the phone?

Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
No, Kingo just gives the user ROOT privileges. You won't lose your stock ROM until you flash a custom rom OVER the STOCK slot. But if you want to keep the STOCK rom, you just create a Rom Slot 2 and flash your custom rom there, keeping both your stock rom in the STOCK slot, and having your custom rom in Rom Slot 2.. You must first ACTIVATE the Rom Slot for the rom you want to boot to, THEN rebbot...

Follow the instructions on the Safe Strap XDA forum OP, and you'll be fine!

No interference with Knox at all...when I went into SuperSU yesterday, it said "Knox is detected on this device, would you like to attempt to disable Knox?" I tapped yes and it said Knox was disabled successfully.
