***How To ROOT 4.3 & NC4 OTA, Install Recovery & Roms - Verizon RETAIL Note 3***

Hi all,

I am writing this message as I watch the beautiful Baja boot animation. I am pleased to say that I followed the instructions posted at the bottom of the OP, (almost) exactly as written, for the NC4 OTA. The only variation I made was to sub Baja v16.1 July 4th ed, in place of Baja v15. I made this variation based on discussion with @az_biker, and he suggested that the v16.1 should also work. Well, it did!! :good::victory::good:...

... Now, without further ado...I'm going to dive into Baja v16.1 with unbridled excitement and anticipation! Thanks again, and TTYS :victory:

Thanks, @az_biker,

I'm sailing smoothly on Baja v16.1 today and I am super impressed with the way things work, and how well they work. I've found that there are modules which I don't fully understand and I hesitate to plunk around with them too much, though I feel less intimidated by the prospect of having to start over. Then, this is only day one. I don't want to mess around and dink things up after I've been involved with this ROM for a few weeks, etc. I fully intend to hit up some donate buttons, though I apologize I'm light in the coffers right now. I know, I know, lip service doesn't mean the same thing as "ka-ching!"

I want to say that I'll be re-stating the previous portion of this reply in the BajaROM thread proper for two reasons: (1) for kudos, (2) I have other questions about Baja which I presume should be asked in that thread. I'm not doing so to be redundant or to spam and I apologize in advance if I step on any toes.

In regard to the instructions, there are a couple of things I'd consider would have made them more clear:
  • Add a line or clarification that the instructions are applicable to Baja v16.1 as well. More experienced flashaholics may recognize compatibility when they read it. Those like myself are likely to ask the question. Thanks for the PM, btw.
  • Clarify the line about "Wipe Data, Use Factory Reset Slider." I realize the mistake I made the first time around was to wipe wipe data and then I had to go back and replace the ROM zip on the internal SD (sd0). [I-B-n00b]

That's about it for now, looking forward to learning more about how to flex Baja. Thanks again for everyone's diligence and help.

Activate/install xposed framework in baja settings, check and update gravity box for kk, use gravity box first for any customization. Wanam has components that have issues with cust roms, kk, etc. So anytime a tweak exists in gravity and Wanam, I choose GB first.

Az-biker:
If you have any further questions about going from NC4 to NC2, hit me up On My NC4 OTA thread rather than tie up Alliance Rom any further.

If you took the NC4 OTA or recently got your Note 3, you need to follow these steps (working links found in NC4 OTA thread above):

**************************
IF YOU ARE ON NC4 (Official VZW OTA) Follow The Below Instructions

(courtesy of barrackobama)
WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR DEVICE IS COMPLETELY YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY

Step- 1 - Root Device with TowelRoot courtesy of geohot

Step- 2 - Install Busybox from play store and install busybox itself

Step- 3 - Install Safestrap 3.75 courtesy of Hashcode

Step- 4 - Boot into Safestrap, Select Stock Slot

Step- 5 - Wipe Data, Use Factory Reset Slider

Step- 6 - Install the latest Alliance ROM courtesy of the Alliance Crew

Step- 7 - Reboot into Download mode From Safestrap

Step- 8 - Unzip & Install In ODIN This NC2 Kernel .tar courtesy of Beanstown106

XDA user barrackOBAMA confirmed these instructions work!

Tom_q2356:
I am currently on Step-3, and actually before asking you questions, I had Safestrap 3.72 installed. Now I have just uninstalled that and replaced with version 3.75; however, when I go to the recovery, it still shows 3.72. I understand that I have TWRP2.7.0.0. and I supposed only newer version of TWRP will support the installation of Safestrap 3.75, right? How should I do this without having to go back to Odin NC4 with the pit file, which I had done by now five or six times and eventually failed to flash Alliance. Thanks very much for your help!!!

Did you uninstall 3.72 first, then install the 3.75 apk on your phone (ext sdcard), and then open 3.75 and click 'install recovery'?

Well, I finally got that taken care of. So the latest Alliance Rom, is it this one--Hltevzw_AllianceRom_Build1? Also, is nc2kernel.tar.md5 (8.7mb) a correct one I can use? Thanks Az_biker!

First off if you have a retail version you can not flash twrp or any custom recovery other then safe strap. If you do in fact have a twrp recovery on your device then you have a unlocked developer edition and you should of mentioned that in my thread. The developer edition requires a different method for flashing roms. Can you clarify before you end up with a bricked device?

Second, those are the exact same steps I gave you. At this point I am not sure you should be messing with your device. Do you know somebody more experienced that can assist you? Not trying to be rude or anything, but I just do not want to read that you bricked your device.

Az_Biker,

When I hit "Create Custom Settings Backup," it says, "error reading the backup.txt, make sure it is in /Alliance folder!!" And when I go to safestrap recovery, I see a dead robot. Everything else looks fine.:good:

I'm going to agree with droidstyle.

You've been referred to several resources and are having hiccups at almost every step. I'm not even sure what you're asking in your last post.

At this point, with all the respect in the world, I suggest you reboot into android download (not Safestrap) , do a factory reset/wipe data, returning your device to oem stock.

Reread all the resources you've been provided, make sure you have a basic understanding of each step, then retry rooting your device.

I really appreciate both of Az-biker's and Droidstyle's help!!! I guess you are right, I have had too much "hiccups" on flashing this rom. Even right now, I still don't think I have successfully flashed Alliance. 99% of my phone just look no different than before flashing anything. Sorry, I stressed out too much at the beginning, went through some horrified moments. Anyways, I have high respect for both of you, for your knowledge and your big help in doing all these. I probably just need a vocation and more patience in doing this next time. Thanks very much for keeping me here!!!

Like I said, reread the Rooting threads I mentioned (in my sig), get comfortable with understanding the steps involved, get familiar with the terms involved, then hit me up when you're ready!

Battery Drain Issue!!!

Hey Az_Biker, Can you tell me if installing a custom ROM in safestrap on a custom ROM slot 1 drains your battery a lot? I mean it is operating off of the SD card and that's the only thing that I can think of that changed on my phone recently? If that's not it it do you know what else could be causing my battery drain?

Yes. While rom slots 1-4 are active in 3.75, using anything other than the stock slot will result in poor batt life...

I just tried to install an MJE modem and it failed. Using Odin 3.09 and one of Beans modem files. It all looked good, rebooted automatically but did not take. I am on the NC4 modem. Any advice?

My laptop is down so my cheat notes are unavailable :D if memory serves, the most common error here is not unpacking the tar zip and only flashing the .md5 file...
If that doesn't apply to you, hopefully someone else will jump in :D
