Weird that it just succeeded in 1 try for me, it might have to do with different firmware versions. Mine runs on the model SGPT111NL/S.
Can you guys tell me what model number it displays beneath the SONY logo on the back? That might give a small indication, or not. Who knows.

ANYWAY.
I promised to make a vid, here it is:
Note: Quality sucks (not screen quality, but quality quality. It does display the process)
Thank you sir! I was going crazy trying to get adb to work and finally I got it.

Lol just for the heck of it I tried to type the command bat by hand to see if perhaps timing was an issue. Yeah still same error I had as before. Gotta love the process of rooting :D

I can confirm the root worked perfectly after I was able to have my tablet recognized through adb. If you are having issues make sure your table is recognized through “adb devices” and if it is not you might need to reinstall drivers. What worked for me was this forum to get adb to recognize my tablet.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17624941

When I tried to do it as Sony states on their website I had nothing but problems. Hope this helps with some of the challenges people are having.

does anyone know, would this prevent the imminent ICS OTA upgrade from working? Thats my only concern.

I realise that there may not be a way of answering this yet :) but as root is not unlocked BL, theres no guarantee I can custom ROM to ICS, so I'm a bit hesitant with official ICS so close

OP stated he doesn't know if we will lose root with ICS or any OTA update for that matter.

I highly doubt root would prevent us from being able to upgrade to ICS. In all probability we would probably just loose root. Unless they specifically wrote in the installation script to auto fail if root is detected lol.

I bet anyone here $5 that ICS OTA will close the root exploit.

Sony reads this forum too, remember?

And since Dan was so nice explaining in details how he had got the root, I am 99.99% sure Sony will take care of this. It is Sony after all.:D

So I recommend to those who want root NOT to install OTA ICS.
I know I won't.

We do need couple of talented developers on board to figure out a way to upgrade to ICS AND keep the root.

I am sure it is doable.

Since ICS will be on every tablet sooner or later, chances are 100 times higher that another exploit will be found that works on all of them, so don't worry about Sony doing anything ;)

Oh yeah?

Root was found for Vizio vtab1008 build 9.1.56.
Vizio did OTA update to 9.1.57.

Guess what, no root is possible or available after this "update".

Root was developed for HTC View 4G Gingerbread.
There is NO root for View Honeycomb and most probably there will never be one.

Don't kid yourself.
It was found.
We need to keep it and cherish it.

Why would Sony care if we had root or not?

Besides owning a Sony Tablet S, I also own a Sony Xperia play. Sony in fact helped xda in regards to development for the Xperia play. They even gave directions on how to obtain the code you needed to unlock your bootloader.

Now if were talking about having an unlocked bootloader, and if it would prevent upgrading to ICS; that's a complete different story.

Anyone who's used Linux knows exactly why it comes without root access initially, and how easy it is to obtain root. Its nearly identical to android in this sense, and also in regards to the purpose of being rooted.

I don't think the concern is losing root. Its not being able to update to the new ics update once released. I'm curious too.

Sent from my g2x
bingo

I've seen it before, heck I've even read XDA threads where some manufacturers/carriers, the OTA update fails even if you've uninstalled (without root - just via normal settings) carrier crapware...

Just throwing this idea out there (I have no idea if it's relevant to this device or not)

Would we be able to get cwm going with something to do with 2nd-init?

The motorola milestone 2 and moo defy both have locked bootloaders, yet are able use CWM and custom roms via 2-init (or some jazz).

If you check out the milestone 2 forums there is a guide to 2nd-init use in the android development forums.

The only catch is that us milestone 2 users are pretty reliant on the defy devs to first make the roms, then they get ported over to us (they have similar kernels and stuff)
So basically we would need a device with basically the same hardware and similar kernel.. not sure if such a thing exists since there's only 2 Sony tabs. We'd probably lose device specific things like the IR blaster too.

But just a thought! :D
