How to root your Pixel 3a/3a XL WITHOUT TWRP

Solved solution?Tried to patch a boot.img on a 3a

I've flashed image from magisk apk then copied it to my computer and fastboot getver which was "a", then flashed, then brick. I am a noob to a point and can get to bootloader where it tells me about an error boot prepare. I don't know how to salvage my phone at this point. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I was able to flash stock boot image through fastboot and get back to a working phone. i'm at a loss as to why the magisk image didn't work. new unlocked google pixel 3a xl phone.

What version of Magisk did you try?

Check the 3a forums themselves. I have a thread there with pre-patched images
Their latest version. I'm wondering whether boot image itself was the issue.

Try canary. It's what I used for the normal 3a and it worked fine.
found issue when flashing in fastboot that instructions were to include current ver letter with the patched image. even though I had the letter a, I flashed without using the letter in the comment and it worked fine.

where is the magisk apk? I can only find a magisk zip file which I normally flash zips with twrp.
latest stable results in \Magisk-v19.2.zip. where is the apk?
I patched boot.img a 23,781 size file and copied it back to PC then flashed it using the correct letter now I get "error boot prepare" on fastboot screen and phone won't boot at all. I guess I bricked it?

Mines already sim unlocked permanent I have oem unlock checked running command fastboot flashing unlock or fastboot oem unlock don't work, I was using powershell but switched to cmd and still can't get it to work
