I'm just learning this stuff, trying to make my own rom. This helps immensely. Thank you so much. One question, do I edit my apk before building the rom or after? I'm a total noob at this.

Edit your apk's before you recompile anything. You can't change anything but images without having the apk decompiled:good::D

I did that, I decompiled, edited, recompiled, put the apps back in the working folder in the kitchen and built the rom, now I'm just waiting for time to try to flash it.

---------- Post added at 07:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:16 AM ----------

So I booted my new rom and the changes didn't take. I followed the directions, I moved the arsc file from new to old. Am I supposed to move the entire new apk into the working folder?

Yes, but with this tool you really don't even need kitchen. Using 7zip just replace the apk in the ROM zip after following the instructions:beer:

Ok, I can't get this to work. I built a deodexed rom for sprint gs3. When I edit the ui sounds in seccontacts and SecGallery I get a force close with each one. This worked before when I just pushed the edited apks with root explorer but I'm trying to add the edits to my rom. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Any insight would be appreciated.

A logcat should pinpoint your issue. However it could be the wrong permissions set in the updater script, it may not have compiled correctly, or could be incorrect placement or file type. (Probably not your issue if pushing worked) I'd almost bet on placement but cant be sure without a log to view.

After more reading I think I know what I did wrong. I didn't copy resources.arsc and other edits to the original apk, I just used the new apk.

---------- Post added at 06:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:36 AM ----------

During the recompile process I get this

aapt: warning:string 'stms_version' has no default translation

WTH does that mean?

Dont worry about aapt errors they mean nothing. Youll get some error/warnings but they don't affect anything the apk should rebuild without a problem

I think I'm missing a step on a new apk. I added some wallpapers to secwallpaperchooser/res/drawable-hdpi. It recompiled fine and I copied the resources.arsc from the build folder to the apk in the dist folder, but it isn't working. Do I need to copy the drawable-hdpi folder to the apk in the dist folder also?

Did you copy the META-INF to the new apk?
