Unfortunately phone number (and SIM card) is a must. You need to add it to Mi Account. They will send you a verification code through SMS

Don't worry. They won't spam You with useless SMS messages after that. And the verification code isn't a premium SMS message either

What do you think, i can unlock this phone with my sim card if i buy this phone from auction portal?

Buying Xiaomi Devices from resellers comes with a hight risk, that they will come with modified MIUi build filled with ads and spyware and fake unlocked bootloader (and instead of global version of the phone, you can receive a Chinese version flashed with modified global ROM).

There is a guide how to fix "fake bootloader unlock" but you will have to blind Your phone to MIUI account, add your"s phone number to the account and wait 720h to truely unlock the bootloader after all

But as long as that reseller guarantees that box is factory sealed - You are save

Just download the unlock tool, unpack it and run .exe file

There is a chance, that using older version of unlock tool will shorten the time (you will get 360h instead of 720h or 1440h)

I'm not unlocked yet.

My first try ended with a error "there is no phone number associated with this account". So I went to settings--> Xiaomi account (under accounts section)---> Security (or whatever you section is called in English)---> Phone numer. I had to add it. During that I received a verification code from "xiaomi" (this is how the sender was displayed in SMS app) with verification code. After succesfully adding the numer and retrying to unlock, counter started. ~ 3 weeks left. I don't know if another SMS will come. I have hear that when counter reaches 0 you get a SMS about that, but I'm not 100% sure. In about 3 weeks I will find out

I already had an account on Xiaomi (from experimenting on my OPO, same SIM card), i guess that is why i didn't get any notification by them.
The current version of the unlocking tool didn't work; an older one (3.3.525.23)displayed that i have to wait 1 month.......

I will have to wait and see...

Hi everyone, This is a guide on how to unlock the bootloader on your Redmi Note 5. I have a video attached of the same process at the end. I'm going to summarize the whole process here. So let's get started.
Caution:- Backup ALL of your phone's data somewhere and try this method at your own risk.

1) Go to http://en.miui.com/unlock to get unlock permissions for your MIU Account. Use a Mobile Number based account and not an E-Mail ID Based account. Then you will be greeted with a form. Fill in your details and write why do you want to unlock the bootloader on your phone. Try to be as genuine as possible as they otherwise might just reject your application. Once you submit the application, It may take a few hours or days and they will notify you via an SMS saying that your account is ready for unlocking

2) Go to the same unlock link en.miui.com/unlock and this time they will provide a link to download the MiFlash tool. Download the zip file, Unzip it. Install MI Drivers first by right clicking on the file and running it as an administrator.

3)Now on your Redmi Note 5 Pro, Enable developer options. You can do that by tapping going to Settings>About Phone> Tap the MIUI Version 7-8 times. Then You can access Developer options by going to Settings>Additional Settings>Developer Options. Now Sign in with your MIUI Account(The same one used earlier) and also Put the SIM Card In of the same number that you made the MIUI ID with. Now you need to use a VPN to switch to China Servers. You can do that by Using PlexVPN or I have found this VPN App on some forums, which I have uploaded with this post. If you are using the latter app, select china Line 2 in server and press connect.

4) Once it is connected, Go To Settings>Additional Settings>Developer Options, Check the OEM Unlock Option On, Then go to Device Unlock Status, Here select the option of Add Account and Device. This will bind the device with your account. Now Backup all of your data somewhere and turn the phone off.

5)On your PC, Right click on MiFlash Tool, Run it as an administrator. Fill up your account details, The tool will check if you have permissions or not. If all goes well it will give you instructions to connect your phone in fastboot mode. So press the volume down + Power button on your phone until you see the fastboot screen. Now the Tool will ask you for your permissions, Grant them and Voila! Within 5 minutes it should unlock the bootloader on your Redmi Note 5 Pro. If you'r eunlucky, you might get a message saying try after 360 or 72 hours. So you will have to wait. I personally got that error with my email ID based account, But it worked well with my mobile number based account

So that's how you unlock the bootloader on your Note 5 Pro. I have also rooted my phone and tried to enable Camera2API but the front camera crashes on Enabling Camera2API. But if you guys still want a tutorial about rooting this phone, let me know. I will make that too. Here is a video of the whole process, You can watch it.

I have the same phone and the same problem as liviodevito10. The difference is that I have already unlocked BL but I blocked it again by flash. Now I get the same message. I had rom global with b20 now i have global dev. Question: what should the rom be for unlocking? or china dev. OK? I am asking for advice. Thank you.

You write "last developer rom installed". What kind of rom do you have now? global or developer? I have a global developer and this is probably bad. Because I already had BL unlocked but I blocked it again because I was flashing with the clean & lock option.

I've changed with global stable 10, and I have same error.
I have to Say that it's not the First Time I unlock bootloader with this account, cause I managed doing It on mi5 and mi note 3, before the redmi note 5

Maybe try an older version of MiFlash if latest fails? There were some errors in Chinese language back when you could do a workaround for BL unlock, but those were mostly for Indian variant. There could be some info in those unlock threads about it.

This message means: (the phone is used too short). If you want to unlock BL in the same account again you have to wait 30 days or try on another account.

and when i opened http://en.miui.com/unlock/ and clicked on unlock now , it is directly showing download mi unlock is it normal?

Yes you can download the tool straight away You may have to wait a while to unlock your phone though so be prepared.

I had to wait the full 30 days since the 7th of November But today I am going to unlock and see what mischief I can get up to with my Note 5
