What version of the
OS is this for? Can it handle the entire set of OS versions? Can you update it for ICS with all the latest ota updates?

HP
I was on stock Honeycomb when I first wrote this guide. The same guide should work for any OS regardless.

I did everything as in the tutorial and when I use the Root Check Basic app to check, it says "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access"

any idea?
EDIT: Deleted my previous post. I posted about the wrong device. I'm going bonkers these day I swear.

Could you copy the CMD output here so we could see where you went wrong?

Step 2.2 says:- " On your PC, open up File Explorer and Browse to: C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools " where i'm supposed to open a command prompt. But after installing the downloads suggested in Step 1 I dont have a folder called " PLATFORM-TOOLS", but I do have one called TOOLS and another called PLATFORM (empty incidentally). So where am I supposed to open the command prompt?

I have opened the command prompt in both the PLATFORM folder and the TOOLS folder and in each Ive typed the command line "adb reboot bootloader" as instructed in STEP 2.4 but on both occasions I got the message " 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

Help please.

I am having the same exact problem as well
Edit:
To the gentleman above me, it seems by default it doesnt download the "platform-tools" folder. You have to go into the "android-sdk" folder double click on "SDK Manager" and you will see it as an option. From there you can download it. I havent gotten any further yet but I guess that's step zero for you and I =P

It was third time lucky for me before I had success. I'm not sure why it took me this long. Was it because I used a different Xoom-Universal-Rip.zip the third time (the successful one I got via the link in post #26 in this thread). I was aware that STEP 3.5 worked third time and the 'adb remount' command didnt run properly the first and second time.

No SU-rights, although Xoom is unlocked and new recovery burned

Hi,

I want to have SU-rights (e.g. to have access to all paths). Hence with 'oem unlock' I unlocked the Xoom. Then I flashed a new recovery. Worked fine. Then I started with new recovery and installed new zip-file for recovery. Worked (when I started in recovery mode, the screen locked different, zip file was accepted, no failure)
BUT: no SU-rights are reached (e.g. install 'terminal emulator' and type 'su' for superuser-rights. Result: 'permission denied'.

What is the failure?

Any idea?

HW MZ604
Android 4.04
recovery tested: rogue_XM-recovery-1.5.0-rc3.zip and eos-recovery-r6.zip and xoom-universal-root.zip

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Hi,
No answer up to now. Hence I will try to explain in more detail what I did and what my problem is:

Oem unlock:
Start fastboot, use the command fastboot oem unlock, follow the commands on the xoom, got the confirmation, that it worked successfully. Question: is there any option, to check, if it was really successfully?

Recovery replacement:
Flash recovery img to xoom, reboot, 'install zip from sd', choose correct file. I go the confirmation, that the process was successfully. Question: How can I verify, that it really was suessfully?

SU-rights: the apk was installed by zip file already, su-app is running in background.

Problem: when I want to su-rights (going into app path or with terminal) the su-rights are not available. With android 3.x it worked properly, but not with 4.04

What is my fault????

Attempting to Root

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and i am about to attempt to root my xoom, im a little scared, i am not going to lie cos i dont want to have a fancy doorstop but i wanna give it a go becuase..... well all the benefits really :p

I am in the process of getting all of the requirements sorted but i just wanted to confirm a few things:

Will this work on a UK wifi MZ604 xoom? OS is 4.0.4?
If it all goes pear shaped am i able to stock it? or revert back?
I know i am able to add custom roms but at what stage do i do this? and how?
i heard people have really nice roms and settings menus etc, where can i get these from?

If i am asking too many questions please point me in the right direction.

P.S This forum is epic from what i have seen :good::good::good::D:good::good::good::good:

Now for the questions:

Issues with 'Motorola fast-boot' and Getting Google Apps to work.

Thankyou for the well written guide, I've got an issue getting Google Apps to work and recently with the recovery has defaulted back to 'Motorola fast-boot' . I forgot to rename the files mentioned first time round, I've now managed to restore clockwork-recovery but can't rename the files.

I've started a post at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46390795#post46390795

Thanks for producing a good guide.

An update (see my forum post for more)...

With regard to renaming the files ' /system/recovery-from-boot.p' and 'system/etc/install-recovery.sh' I've still not managed this, when the tablet reboots into clockwork recovery its connection with adb is dropped. I've also tried doing them in terminal when booted and they don't seem to be there. Because of this I must have had to root it about 10 times now.
