Are you sure you dont have the "Allow initial installations only" box checked under security> Unknown sources? Some stock roms have that option. Just a thought.

Also you have to reroot if you factory reset but I dont think you dont lose your internal storage so you can easily reroot if you rooted before.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but the issue was a bad Sandisk memory card. Thank You very much!

I just wanted to check and make sure this thread and these instructions are still applicable? The last update on it was about 2 years ago and the phone is now on 4.4.2 KitKat. The Spring S4 is new to me but the phone in my possession is about a year old.

TIA

Yes works for KitKat 4.4.2 (NG2)

Yeah it works make sure in your phone settings you have USB debugging mode checked (Settings>More>About Device and click on Build number till it tells you Developer options is unlocked then check USB Debugging mode)

Get the Samsung Drivers for your PC > http://androidxda.com/download-samsung-usb-drivers

Here is the latest CF-Auto-Root with Odin > https://download.chainfire.eu/325/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720.zip

Put phone in download mode (Hold volume down, power, home key at the same time then follow the directions on screen)

Run Odin with Admin Privileges then click on PDA add the CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720.tar then click start and let it run till it says it passed.

Now install SuperSU from the google playstore. Grant root access to your apps.

Done.

Apparently, I did things out of order. It worked.

Download mode.
Start ODIN
Wait till file is loaded.
Plug in phone
Wait till COM port identified
Click Start and
wait for PASS.

So I followed your instructions. After clicking start, ODIN says "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)". I clicked start a second time and I have the same thing.

On my D710, i remember seeing "PASS" fairly quickly. Did I do something wrong?

<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

OK, so I have a new issue. My phone is rebooting unexpectedly. Then it is going into a boot loop. The only way to stop the loop is to plug the phone in. Any ideas?

This worked perfectly using the downloads to which you linked and the OP youtube video. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 Sprint version L720T.03 and took all the updates, so running Android version 5.0.1. I will say there were some differences from in the video though: the box in the odin window never turned yellow, and I couldn't figure out a way to uncheck the "F.Reset Time." I just went with it and seems to be fine. Installed a root checker and confirmed, then downloaded a wifi tether app and it seems to work-- though I don't have a good LTE signal where I am right now so I'll try again when I'm in a better spot.

imo the easiest way to root any version is to just flash TWRP recovery (with odin), boot to recovery, and when you reset system it will ask if you want to root...

I would say no - CF-Auto-Root shows the SPH-L720 files are based off the 4.4.2 OS, not 5.0.1. I was going to try this today as well but I'm not in the mood to fix a bricked phone. I don't want to flash a different firmware on my device, all I want to do is get root back - which apparently must be extremely difficult to do on 5.0.1 because searching XDA and Google doesn't reveal any current information on rooting this device and OS combination.

I tried Kingo root this morning which didn't work and OneClickRoot is no longer free, so I'm in the same boat as all of you who want to root their SPH-L720 running Lollipop 5.0.1. As soon as I figure something out, I'll be sure to post it in a new thread.

Why not just flash twrp via Odin and let it root the rom?

Phone didn't brick, but yeah gotta wait. I didn't realize how much I hated sprint SG4 until 5.0.1 update. Shame I didn't do anything about it before then, because now I have an itchy trigger finger to wipe all things sprint from my phone.

Looks like scrumpulate tried that above and it didn't work (at least that's my impression of his post since he quoted yours)...
I kind of got that impression also.. but it worked on a friends phone when doing an Unlock.. so I dont know. If it didnt work, an error message, or log, would be needed to find out why

I wish I knew for sure if it would brick my phone or not... If it won't, I'll try it tonight. I just don't feel like messing around with a bricked phone with the 4th of July weekend coming up.
