So is there a thread/guide that discusses how to root from stock with the newest MDL kernel/update already installed? I'm guessing it's:
1. odin custom recovery
2. Flash kernel without setuid blocking compiled in
3. Flash supersu zip
4. reboot
5. freeze selinux app with TiBU or similar
6. Profit

am I far off base? Recommendations for which recovery and kernel to use?

You got it. People are reporting the recovery not sticking in the linked thread in my above post though. Be aware so you're prepared on getting it to stick.

Shabby, Faux and Agat have recoveries (I've personally used shabby's).
I like cwm so that's what I use. (Garwynn's - Team sxtp, but I'm partial. :p)

Excuse my ignorance, but is there a guide to root for those who bought the phone with MDL? Most of what I'm reading says, "This is how you update if already rooted"

Please advise.

Yeah, I'm there already. It's not incredibly helpful since Odin is explained on a different thread.

I am trying to follow this now and I am still having problems. I am no Noob, I have been rooting since the HTC Touch.

I didn't put the Super User on my SD card first and when I rebooted I think I lost custom recovery. I was just wondering if anyone had a step by step list in one easy page. I will probably be rooted before anyone replies with what I am looking for.

Hit me up on gtalk. It'd be a lot faster to help you then. Same name @gmail.

After that we can talk with the Op of that thread if you have suggestions to make it easier to follow.

I added you to G+ and sent you a msg in hangout. I don't normally use G+ and I have no idea if hangout and Gtalk are the same thing.

I followed Odin and flashed SuperUser. When I open it it wants to update and is taking forever... I think there is a problem. I missed something I am sure.

I am now rooted with MDL, TWRP, and SU 1.25

I had some speed bumps but I got over them.

Here is my advise:

Drop all the files you are going to need onto your SD card before you begin. This includes the new Kernel and the SU zips.

Then when you use Odin and boot into CWM recovery you can flash first the Kernel then the SU before you ever reboot the phone. This should work. I didn't have to pull my battery or anything funny like that. Just make sure you flash the right files in the right order and this shouldn't take any longer then 15-20 mins.

Good luck.

Any Questions feel free to hit me up. Facebook, Google Hangout, or just PM here.

also big thanks to MoHo for talking me through it.

I updated the thread with more detailed instructions for flashing with Odin and installing .zip files in custom recovery. Along with the recent findings in flashing the custom recovery and other minor things. THANKS!

Please update this thread, as this method no longer works for anyone with up-to-date software.
Keep in mind that QBKing77 maintains many threads for many devices.

With issues and varying degrees of success with rooting MDL, maybe the suggestion should have been -

"Please label this thread for MDC builds."

When there is uniformity of the masses for MDL or subsequent builds, I'm sure we'll see an updated video. Rooting MDL seems challenging at best with plain language "how to" threads already existing.

No sir, Thank You!

the whole thing works like it should it will reboot the phone and everything, I got superuser installed but when I open it it tells me I have to update it, I try that and it says "there was an error installing Superuser. Please send a log of the error to the developer." - also the root checker says its not rooted

the phone is up to date - here is the info if it helps

great odin, I love using that lol

maybe I will wait to see if something else happens that allows me to root without using odin

I do want to install a rom and maybe there is a odin package that will root and install rom also because I dont like using odin unless I have to and only as little as needed there have been problems in the past with odin bricking phones and yea it could be user error but I just like to use it as little as possible

I totally agree I hate odin its a last resort kinda thing but I was ready to root n was just being lazy so I just odin mdc back onto my phone n was rooted in 3 mins after so I was happy it n theres a stock rooted mdl to replace what you lost by going back to mdc so it just kinda up to you on what you want to do but there are several work around for this mdl update by Crawj and alot other great devs too

So after restoring to stock MDC, I downloaded and installed the ota. However I was still on stock MDC baseband but MDL build. I was still getting the warning about it detecting a malicious app although I hadnt even flashed the recovery or rooted yet. Im trying again, but does anyone have any idea where I went wrong?

Exit: wrong thread sorry
